Candle flames or lights are hard to do. If you've made candles with good flames and light then please post your methods here or links to articles about it.

Here's how I make candles for the Lightworks renderer in trueSpace 5:

All materials have zero luminosity. Add a little to the flames if needed.

Wax: Translucent reflectance (1.49 setting this picture). Slight transparency set on the color panel (0.98 this picture). Place a light inside the top of the candle since translucency only works for lights inside the translucent object. Adjust its brightness as needed and use transparent shadows.

Flame: Color: R 235 G 185 B 2. Translucency reflectance (1.79 this picture). Eroded transparency set on color panel (S 0.83 C 0.68 F 1 this picture). Put the flame light inside the flame object with transparent shadows.

Apply a slight glow using the Lens Flare effect. I'll experiment using a sphere with the Glow transparency from the Color panel for candle glows sometime.

This method works best for dimly lit scenes. The settings of the shaders must be balanced or adjusted for the lighting of each scene. For example: If the candle wax appears solid white from exterior light then lower the translucency setting.

This is a TS5 picture with Lightworks.

I put these models from my 2003 Christmas picture http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?p=21546#post21546 in the Free Objects thread in the Garage. Modified the clock to have numbers.
