I just want to see some good (no, great!) quality artwork that promotes tS for what it is. A lot of ideas here and I, for one, would like to hear the 'management's' thoughts on this.
Better incentives, more recognition, more encouragement for 'beginners'....prizes that make you want to win and make the absolute best images you can to try and do so.
If that is via one or more galleries then so be it. I just hope there will be a diversity of entry (and winner).
I entered many a 'cartoon' image doubting I could win against the shiny photorealistic images but I did..a few times, and that reflects (excuse pun) the judging process. I have never had issues with the judging.
I just question the quality of entries some months and the message that 'no winner' sends out...
Beyond that lies a rocky road of accusation and suspicion so I will say no more on that point... |

Has anyone considered a point system? Give the winner/winners a choice of an award for the month or points toward a big prize at the end of the year. This could possibly bring back Artist month after month trying to build points. It could be a gift card to an Electronic Store/Art Store/Mag Subscription/Computer etc... the higher the points the bigger the prize.
Edit: The point system has benefits such as
Allowing someone like a Teacher (Splinters) to share points with Students.
A Student could gain points which could lead to owning VRay without winning First Place.
Brings back competition and gives everyone a fair chance.
Points could be used to purchase plug ins of the future or current ones like Dribble.
Each Category could get a different number of points. Animation Awarded the most points since it takes much more work to produce.
Points can be doubled during Slow Months to help increase number of submitters.
I would make the Point System part of the Forum/Gallery submission process and advertise that on the Main page.
Outside judges?, blaaa |

This does raise a good point. Maybe there could be additional prizes for best realistic render (and I don't agree that this puts lightworks users in the bin, most of the best ts images I've seen have been with LW) and best art piece/ toon.

This is definitely worth considering. I still like the idea of quarterly themed contests with bigger prizes as well. |

Transient touches on another good point in terms of render engines - I'd like it made transparent on the Gallery page which engine was used to produce the image - this would at least help 'advertise' the capabilities of the various engines. At the moment, I think this is most important for the real-time entries - whilst there aren't many of them, it's difficult to 'judge' them on exactlty the same basis as the others as obviously the real-time mode cannot achieve certain things possible elsewhere. W!zard's dragon is an awesome demonstration of some of the effects possible and whilst I also think it's a pretty amazing render in its own right, the impressiveness of it may be lost if it's not clear that it's been achieved with a 'limited' engine.
We all know W!zard can produce great effects (volumetrics etc) with LW but he's one of a fairly small group pushing hard at the boundaries of the RT engine. NB - I'm not singling him out, just using as an example!
Going as far as separating out categories for each render engine is probably going to far as you'd diminish the number of entries in each category, but separate sections for online and offline rendering may help raise the profile of the RT renderer. At a minimum I think the render engine should be stated against the entry so at least as viewers we get a better understanding of what's possible.
There's been a lot of interesting points so far - good that we've been given the opportunity to explore this a bit more, it's certainly a challenging balance. I thnk the end of the month deadline is the clearest system for submission, would be nice to see the results a bit quicker but don't really mind waiting for them. |

I prever to keep winner selected internaly by Caligari staff (not only by Roman).
Just do it internal (1st=3point, 2nd=2 point, 3rd=1 point) like below examples:
Roman vote:
1st: Steinie's image
2nd: trueBlue's image
3dr: Prodigy's image
Norm vote:
1st: Prodigy's image
2nd: trueBlue's image
3dr: Spinters's image
Tom vote:
1st: Prodigy's image
2nd: Steinie's image
3dr: Spinters's image
Thomans vote:
1st: Prodigy's image
2nd: Spinters's image
3dr: W!zard's image
...
...
...etc
1st is contesntant who got large points.
Please do it internally or some members noise the result by vote for his/her friend only. :D
PS:How about to change the contest become bimonth contest? |

Just my last thoughts on this matter which should be addressed to achieve user growth and a trueSpace future.
There are many goals we are trying to achieve here.
1) Make the judging fair and diversified.
2) Increase the number of Quality submissions.
Look how quality Animation entries have dwindled away for example.
VE is new but only one submission?
3) Increase the value to the User so he/she wants to participate.
4) Make it worthwhile for Professionals to submit.
5) Help the Plugin Developers grow with the Product
6) Raise the Standards.
7) Getting the 3D beginner/student involved early on.
I think Caligari would agree that most of these can create growth and excitement for all of us. |

Thanks for the feedback! Will now start to process all this. One thing I can say then is that we won't be doing community voting for the core of the contest, that was pretty much universally unpopular.
More info once we have taking these ideas and bounced them around a bit to see what we come up with! Again will try to get the system in place before the next round (ie for judging this month's entries), but if we don't manage to do that, we'll change it for October's entries for sure.
Thanks,
Tom
EDIT - I am immune to cute kitty photos, my judging would remain unswayed! |

What would help, in a lateral sort of way if Caligari made up a form letter that has information about obtaining trueSpace - showing that it is a free application.
This letter could be downloaded (preferably PDF if graphics are used) and then sent out by users to local schools and universities.
Since Caligari is a subsidiary of Microsoft, I'm sure there is a window (no pun intended) of opportunity for inclusion into an existing Microsoft program that allows for participation nationwide. (i.e. the inclusion of trueSpace on DVD of Microsoft's software or in promotions.)
Once that is established, a student division could be established for contests and competition. After all, isn't this how Apple got started by making mass appeal to the education population?
I would think some enterprising plug-in writer in conjunction with a talented group of people could make a wonderful software that could assist teachers in their curriculum including hints and tips; lesson plans (for trueSpace/VE) and etc.
Nothing is stronger than school pride and regional competition combined for motivation.
I'm sure local businesses would be delighted to assist students in prizes, scholarships and other motivations in said contests and events.
People want to be challenged and they want to have interaction. What better way than to start with the youth and those who educate them to expose them to the world of 3D graphics and the Computer Graphics Industry via contests and events.
Just saying... |

Hi all!!!
It is not easy to give some idea about it,because many people have a good idea.
But I think need to change something, because there are real good imagens
and sometimes they choose the wrong.
About the prizes I agree with most people, need changes. Imagine someone
make a good animation and spend hours, days and energy!! etc..
I make another idea (see image) because It very good for all, specially who is
beginings and new customers who wants to see Examples of work done in TS.
And they could see how is good or no.
The ambassador imagens too, because all customer could see the news and Recent work and studies as well as for students
Best wishes for all |

I've just returned home after traveling abroad and picked this thread up -so comments are bit after the horse has bolted....
Reading Tom's mail I am glad the consensus is to let Caligari be the judges and think an expanded set of voters at Caligari would temper individual bias -though most of the time, I at least understand why the winner won (not always of course ;))
I also think as others have said that the standard should be kept very high (even though this makes it very unlikely I ever will win :D), its the only way that tS will get the attention of new users...
And I also thinkthat promoting the one man show more would be better PR for tS..

I'm going to add my support for actual prizes to entice people (as well as pros) to enter.
