Hi all,

Just to let you know that VE has been updated. If you visit there, you will be asked to install it - ensure you do, so you have the latest version!

Major points to note:

1. Previously, some faces on a model could be totally unlit, appearing black in VE. This is no longer the case, models will be lit on all sides, giving much better results. Note that this invalidates the VE Lighting set up provided in the tS libraries, and removes the need to rotate objects in tS to ensure you reduced the black unlit faces.

2. Textures are still better than plain colors. A plain color shader will show as grey on the unlit side (rather than colored), while a texture based shader will show the expected color (just not as brightly lit).

3. Objects now cast shadows on the ground (my test cube did anyway).

4. It was possible to have a delay when publishing an object, and others being able to see it. I believe this no longer happens, so when you publish and can see it, so can others when you share the link.

All the above should apply to things you already moved onto VE, no need to re-export them. Other things in it not directly relevant to the export process:

1. Clouds and weather, looks nice from my quick tests!

2. Easier to walk on ground level through cities - not found and tested that yet.

3. New cities.

4. The new lighting applies to the cities in VE as well as your objects, so it should look nicer.

Check it all out:

EDIT - PS if you do NOT get an update / install message on visiting the site, open Control Panel and Programs and uninstall your existing VE. I had this happen to me on my 64 bit system, it didnt tell me it had changed, might be a one-off, but just in case (I had that happen with the update for the space explorer too in May, so not the first time - but a quick manual uninstall and visit the site and the latest version is installed!)

Thanks!

Tom

Hello Tom, I failed while tried to install VE on my computer because of I lost my connection on half way.

I successfull download file setup.exe (VE 3D installer. version 3.0.808.29001 size 1.04MB)
After I run above setup.exe program, the program start with download file VirtualEarth3D.msi (huge file???)
While setup.exe still download file VirtualEarth3D.msi, I lost my connection and I must start from zero again. its happened twice. so I give up now. :(

How about just give resumeable download link for file VirtualEarth3D.msi ?

No problems here - update went well. Clouds look good and the shadows look good too.

Lucky, lucky!
First try I got a BSOD. Hooray, I haven't seen one of those in a while.
Second stab at it the installer complained that I have to delete or rename a directory that it insists already exists.
Manually searching and/or letting Windows search fails to turn up the offending directory.
fail.

Computers!! I'm not that lucky Space - so far I've been unable to update my XP to service pack 3 for some reason :(. Most things sort of work, some things just don't <Shrug>. There's probably some potent metaphysical significance in there somewhere but the reality is - when they work, they're great, when they don't work, they're not!

Hope you get it sorted out - the VE update does look better.

The VE install is of course beyond our control :) I'd report those issues direct to the relevant tech support department, and I'll forward the info here to whoever I think would need to know.

We put the news about the web guide for using tS and VE onto our main banner:

http://www.caligari.com

We also updated the page to give some details of what the new VE update brings (havent had time to update the bitesize video on lighting, but have added a note on the web page that the issues are now significantly reduced):

I like that graphic.:p Very nice.

P.s. Does morphs and bones work in virtual earth? or just static objects?

Cheers

Our page, and Wizard's latest creations, are the feature of the main VE blog:

http://blogs.msdn.com/virtualearth/archive/2008/09/29/virtual-earth-gallery-in-truespace-plus-a-contest.aspx

Good looking new content then Wizard, good to see it getting some coverage and exposure! I can only hope that you'll be entering that into the gallery this month, not seen the entries yet to know what is being entered (and that's not an expression of favoritism for picking a winner, merely saying that it would be a shame if such a creation were not being entered for fair chance to win).

Thanks!

Tom

Thanks Tom - I was curious to see how VE would handle a more complex model - it all uploaded just fine.:D

EDit - and yes it's entered in the latest gallery contest!

Great! I hope more people will follow suit and we'll start seeing more creative , imaginative, clever and interesting artwork in VE itself :) And that they enter those into the gallery contest too of course.

Thanks!
