Whooah, less of the old guys. I am 38.
Thanks for that Wizard. You of all people know that I don't attack users; new or old. I have no problem with newcomers or giving advice.
I like it when my posts are taken for what they are; an honest reply to a question.
I am starting to think very much like trebs; the quality of work needs improving if tS is to be taken seriously. When was the last time your jaw dropped at a tS image? Some have come real close for me and there are old ones I still stare at in awe from years ago.
If I told tamtam, "these are great; keep it up" I would be doing her no favours at all. They are crude and basic and a start for something better I am sure.
I am afraid I lose interest when they are done in another package; not to supplement tS as we all do, but on the end of a thread that, like James; announces the move to a better program. I simply don't understand this migration. It is not like moving house. You don't need to put up a 'for sale' sign and tell all your neighbours the new address. Jeez, live a life of virtual luxury and have apartments all of over the 3D world...
Bottom line on this thread; if you need a 'better program' to make images like these, I find it insulting to the capabilities of tS. Now when madmouse, wizard, parva, noko (insert name here) etc. etc. say they have pushed tS as far as it can go...I listen, take note and worry! |

Dam! Well that changes everything! Now I understand everything better, that was the missing piece of the puzzle for me :)
Tam Tam... sorry about that, just having a senior moment.

@splinters - I'm an older teen, not like a 13 or 14 year old teen, I just don't act or feel like one. :( I just wanted to know if you like my art at all. The cartoony humans I made in max are supposed to be cartoony, like anime characters. That's why they have big eyes, and big heads.:) I was going for low poly characters, because they are going to be in a game I wanted to make.
@everyone - I've been using new the software I have (3ds max, RealFlow 4), and I just got the huge 1,215 page book I wanted. It's all about 3ds max 9 (I know, I have max 2009, but this has everything I will need to know about 3ds max). This book even talks about how to use the hair, cloth and water features of 3ds max 9, which are also in 3ds max 2009. That's what I was really looking forward to. Those specific features (which I never understand how to use in Maya 8.0, even through books, and many tutorials.) are what I really wanted, because the way 3ds max is, is different because it has modifiers for making any almost any object into cloth, and so many more modifiers to use when animating, and modeling. The thing is, I haven't figured out the order in which to place each modifier in the stack, but i'm sure the people at The Area (Autodesk's forum), and this huge book could help me with that.
I will have to post my cartoony game art of those people I made in 3ds max 2009 at the Autodesk forum.
@Johny - I know that too.:) But I think (IMO) the software can actually impact what you can do with it. I mean right now TS 7.6 has a cloth feature, but I thought it was not able to be keyframed. In max, everything, or almost everything is keyframable. Although I like TS 7.6, I like max too, but I like it more (at the moment), so sorry (again).:( I like how it's modifier based, and, even though I haven't tried using the features I really wanted yet, I will eventually lean how to use them, and use them right too.:)
Agree! :) That's why people glad to pay more money for additional features. Pay for newer version with new features or pay for some plugins from other developers.
Tam-tam, because you want create character model for game, I suggest you to joing Low-Poly Challenge on Threedy Forums (http://forums.3dtotal.com/forumdisplay.php?f=69), by get participate on the challenge, you can learn many thing from others members. Dont worry if some members critic our works there, because they tell the true. (Very often we think that we create better character model from others ;like parents think that they son is most handsame boy on his school :D). We need thank to people who critic our work, because their critic are good for our improve. :) Remember dont enter the challege for the prize, but for get critic from others member for your improve. ;)
So Tam-tam rather than, we continue compare one software with others software, I think its better if we use our time and energy for learn what we already have. :) |

This is just "it's not the tool, it's the artist" again.
Sure, choose a tool that works for your workflow and style and fits the way your brain thinks. I've known folks who have Max and tS and prefer tS to Max. And I've known folks who prefer Max to tS. I've known folks who will use one, and hate the other (in both directions).
So, we are not here to tell you what software to use, everyone must find what works for them :)
BUT moving to Max or to tS or to any other application will not magically make you better as an artist and modeler. What will make you better is hard work and learning, and that is best done in just one application when starting out. You then get to know the toolset so that it becomes intuitive (whether its tS's or Max's), this lets you then focus on learning principles, which then lets you get to be a better artist, and then with the principles well grasped you can then move to other applications (if you want to broaden your toolset) as learning the different tools will now be easier thanks to knowing the principles.
It's like driving, you have to get so that the technical stuff of manipulating the car is automatic, so you can concentrate on the road and what you are doing.
So I would pick your favored application, and whichever one it is (it really doesn't matter) stick with it and learn it well.
With this being a trueSpace forum, if you select Max, I would suggest you head to a Max forum to post for critiques and advice, as then you will get the help you need with the toolset you are using - this forum isn't a place for Max postings, not because of any hating on Max, nor because of any fear of Max, just because this is about trueSpace and we can share help on what tools to use in tS to acheive things, how you might use such-and-such a feature to make your work better, it would be better if you did this and here's how to do it. We can't do that for Max, so it is not the place to post your Max work.
No need to apologize to us if you like Max better than tS, any more than you'd write to your car or TV or washing machine manufacturer and apologize to them for changing brands :) We wish you luck with learning 3D whatever application you use.
Now, enough digs and attacks at each other, and time to return to the raison d'etre for these forums, trueSpace, it's use, and the artworks made with it :)
HTH!

Great name for a beer! Err now render it to make it have something to do with tS so we can talk about it ;)
Oh wait, I did, here is one I did for Ubik beer, that thanks to the transformative powers of the web has somehow meandered (without my knowledge) over to what seems to be Cornell University's psychology department - anyway, its the only place I could find this image of mine online, so I don't mind that it's stored over there (it was made for use on a website anyway, but just never did make it on there, so nice it is still findable someplace):

Another beer that was infamous because of the pronunciation of its name.
Was the 'butt' of many jokes.

I was born and raised in St. Louis so I know all about Griesedieck beer.
Also I have a beer can collection and the Griededieck can is one of my favorites. Always raises attention or other things...
Talking about weird names did you ever have a Frothingslosh beer with
the head at the bottom of the can?

Thankyou everyone! I feel somewhat better now. I have had a stressfull day today.:(
But why is my "Sorry everyone" topic, changing into a "beer" topic? Isn't that way off topic ...unless it's a 3d beer model! ;)
As you guys and girls(if any of you here are girls) said, I should post my 3ds max works at a 3ds max forum. So that is what I shall do.
BTW, I don't want to participate in any type of contest for speed modeling or any contests, even if there are prizes. Those contests just give me too much stress. I know that's kind of the point, because it's supposed to simulate the time given to make something for a real game and/or movie.
I'm more of a cartoony modeler/animator as you have seen through my 3d art. I have tried many times to make a realistic human head model, and my mom says it looks 'monkeyish', or that it looks like I tried to model a monkey's head rather than a human head!:o
I will keep on trying new methods and tutorials for the software I have, with hope to not make a 'monkeyish' human head!:)
And yes, I am a girl, and splinters mentioned his age, so I might as well do that too. I'm 18 and going on 19 in December! My 3d art was actually (sometimes) better when I got my first student 3d modeling software,Maya Unlimited 8.0 (Well, actually it was after I had ts 4 for a while). Back then, I was about 13 or 14 years old.:) |
