Would there be any interest in a new forum category? trueSpace is growing beyond its roots as a modeling and rendering application, and it could be useful to have a place to discuss those new uses.

I would like to see something like:

------------

trueSpace Unlimited

Exploring the Rosetta platform as a 3D interactive presentation space

------------

Traditional roles for trueSpace: illustration and artwork, design, architecture, animation

Newer roles: game design, collaboration, interactive artwork and shared spaces

Future roles: discuss here

Here are some of the subjects that might be discussed:

trueSpace should have an IDE aspect and a compiler to create specialized Rosetta-platform 'appliances'. The appliances could be distributed in executable form. The appliance would have limited functions, perhaps scripted interactions, a simplified interface. They could be locked, or open for inspection. Parts of the appliance could exist only in shared space, where the user might find the most recent model or interact with other appliance users.

Perhaps the Rosetta platform could be incorporated into Windows? Rosetta as the basis of a future Windows desktop? A plug-in for Internet Explorer? In every Windows Explorer window? Incorporated into MS Office?

Too many people can use PowerPoint badly to create bad presentations. Why shouldn't those people have the opportunity to use a trueSpace appliance that lets them make bad presentations on the Rosetta platform?

Caligari and Microsoft could sponsor a contest under the category. A significant, long-term (multiple months) contest with a significant prize, say, a MS software voucher worth the cost of a MSDN Ultimate subscription. :) They could lay out a series of challenges of graduating difficulty. For example:

Scriptomatic for Rosetta scripts (XML importable?)(Do it within trueSpace and write rs chunks?)

Using the physics engine in trueSpace to create and use self-organizing shapes.

Build a working Turing machine. Points for clarity of operation, not "pretty"

Cellular automata, including Conway's "Life"

Script objects that output other script objects

Script objects that modify themselves

Script objects that learn

Create a customized trueSpace Rosetta application with the current 7.6 version of the software. Not a customized trueSpace, but something like a visually interpreted ftp client or my network monitor.

The price of 'Free' must surely appeal to the educational community. What uses can be developed to put put trueSpace in the hands of as many teachers as possible? Not just art, design, and computer teachers, but the history teachers, the science teachers, the Driver's Ed class and the physics lab.

There's the academic community which may appreciate some accessible tools for esoteric subjects. You may not be able to discover the Higgs boson with the Rosetta physics engine, but Rosetta can visualize data in unique interactive ways (like a science fiction movie). How about a genome viewer?

Or even a subject I've become interested in:

Use the Rosetta platform to produce (potentially navigable) semantic information spaces that are both intuitive and internally coherent, while preserving its characteristics during its projection into a representational space based on what we know users’ spatial cognitive strategies.

So, would there be enough interest?

I'll be holding my hand high up into the sky as interested. :)
Live 3D Workspace and better scripting support like MS Office would be awesome!

Maybe late but my hands are up on the moon. tS allows object behaviors and interactions between objects. This I am extremely interested in since this is very similar to how we interact with our own environment. Yes in getting application specific in incorporating how tS can enhance a given project or area is much needed. Incorporating 3d elements to windows with interactions would be awesome!

Yes this is all cool stuff.
Not sure new category is needed as we should use the Scriptorium for such scenarios.

It had seemed to me that some of the subjects I wanted to discuss did not fall neatly into either the Scriptorium, the Garage, or Interactive Artwork, which is why I suggested a new category. There didn't seem to be much support for the idea, so I let it drop. I still think a specific area to 'blue sky' ideas about (specifically) the Rosetta platform would be a good idea.

Incidently, I haven't posted much recently because my 'advanced projects' have run into limitations of (a) computer horsepower, and (b) brain horsepower. I can't do much about the second, but I'm expecting a new, modern computer next week. :)
