Don't mean to come off as a "complainer"; just trying to help. I would have thought the prize thing would have been a no-brainer. Apparently The Game Creators don't have the same "hurdles" to jump through, as Caligari/Microsoft do, when it comes to deciding upon and instituting prizes for a competition. It just takes a simple e-mail or two to Lee Bamber, Rich Davey, or Rick Vanner. Granted, I and a few others usually get a timely response because we help moderate their Forums (as well as actively interact with the community there). I would have thought that a large Corporation like MS, would have someone there to OK a simple thing like this.

At any rate, I've always liked Tom; he's always fair and even-handed, and I'm obviously getting worked up over this issue. So it's probably best if I just step back and let the rest of you guys sort things out. Who knows; I may actually try to put together my own "mini-masterpiece" for the gallery one day. ;) TS is sorely under-represented at GameArtisans.org (http://www.gameartisans.org).

We do appreciate all the feedback :) And we are working on prizes to see what we can get on there, have a few promises now and just need to dot the i's and cross the t's to be able to add that to the prize list. Of course we don't stop there, we will always be on the look out for sponsors and similar (know anyone who might want some promo by being featured in our contest, let them know that you think they'd make a good prize and put them in touch with me!).

And we are making changes, mostly just want folks to know that some things we can do quick, some take a bit longer, but not to despair if the change isn't in there with the first round of improvements to the gallery. It's an ongoing thing, and doesn't mean we haven't heard you - we just ask for patience, and I just like to let folks know why rather than just blanket saying "it ain't done yet" :)

So first gallery changes should be going live today on site with guidelines and change to submission rules; coming this month should be some new prizes on there (so do be sure to enter this month, as the prizes handed out at the end will be more than what you see on the pages just now); the new judging process is underway so more likelihood of a winner, and more variety of styles and preferences represented.

It should be an exciting time! I hope everyone does enter, and I hope the guidelines provide some help too (and again those are ongoing).

Thanks!

Tom

Just a note, the new entry rules, and our new "guide to what helps make a winning image" are now on the contest information page:

Thanks!

Thanks for the heads up Tom. I see file size is still the same or smaller. I thought animations where 20mb vice 15mb but then I am not sure. Image size 800x600. Anyway those might be increase? I know in the past there have been animations larger then 15mb so not sure of the real limit here.

We'll give the animation size restriction some thought. The aim there is to keep the animations accessible to all, without ruling out those on lower bandwidths - but it is true that we are not always strict with that rule.

I am thinking if we do raise the size restriction on animations, we might request the authors send in two versions, one smaller and one larger, then have links to both for folks with high and low bandwidths? It would be up to the artist if they just upped the compression (and got more artefacts) or resampled down to a lower pixel size, etc, to make the smaller version. What does everyone think?

Thanks!

Tom

Thanks for answering Tom, well worth a try then with submtting two versions, full quality and small size. I hope this will be added into the entry rules. Now maybe only the winning animation will have option for higher quality version if there is one for the submission entry.

Now I just have to get something brewing. . .

I think if Caligari want to promote the animations entered in the monthly competition moving forward from just technical demonstrations to more story driven content, then an increase in the file size allowed is a must. With that in mind, it only sounds reasonable that Caligari should ask for a high and low quality version of the submission and if server capacity is an issue, then again it only seems reasonable that only the winner and runner up would be availble to download in Hi-Res.

A higher and lower res version would be so much more satisfying speaking from an artists POV.

One issue that may need addressing however - I have always had difficulties uploading larger files to the Caligari servers, both the forums and the competition pages seem to time out making it difficult for me to upload more than about 8mb.

Tom, you may recall I had issues uploading the Vue/trueSpace course videos as well. I know we can use FTP to upload to the gallery pages but this does seem a little clumsy.

I have no idea whats involved in addressing this issue but I thought it worth mentioning.

Two size versions for animations would be great, not everybody around the world has high band widths and you don't want to spend a lot of time downloading a piece that in the end you just delete anyway if you don't like it, so the smaller version would work nice for a sneak peak preview kind of thing as well.

Two versions compulsory for winner and runners ups (perhaps honors too) and optional for others? Like W said, depends on the capacity.

I also found speed problems but don't know if it is just me, the forums in general takes long to load compared to other sites from the USA, epspecially the upload options.
