Hello,

A long while ago I posted some of the WIP images I had made of my version of "The Doomsday Machine", a Star Trek episode where I am replacing the effects with TrueSpace effects. (No, I'm not done yet! :D )

Just to complicate matters, I thought I would take on an "easy" episode just to get some renders in and some quick animation. That didn't last too long as I ran into problems creating a "Lava" planet that I thought would harken back to the 1960's in style but look cleaner and get the point across a little faster than the original.

I'm still working on it but here are a few shots of my version of "The Savage Curtain" being done for the most part in TrueSpace 4.

I welcome comments and critisism.

Thank you for your attention,

Eric

I'm finally fairly happy with a kind of a cross between techniques. I'm hoping that Excalbia here looks like it is so hot that it has a molten core and only a semi-fluid set of "land masses" or crusts that are still too think and hot for a human being to step on.

I don't want to get too far from the designs and sensibilities of the original series, so I think I stop "improving" it here.

The image is an old one (I should point out that I made the Enterprise in TrueSpace 4.3) with the planet render and atmosphere glow comp'd in with Photoshop. I'll rerender the entire sequence with the new planet but I have yet to decide if I will keep the atmosphere glow or indeed what option I will use to show it if I keep it in the final renders.

I'd like your opinions, even if I do think I'll keep this planet.

*edit*

I should include what the original looked like.

Okay, just a quick update.

I've finished the quick animation test and I like the speed at which I have the planet turning. I may start the animation a little later into the cycle so that we see the back lava-ocean a bit more but either way.

Now I need to figure out some way to make a convincing lava flow animation. LOL!

I welcome your opinions.

What do you guys think of this as an Island texture? Does it look like a satellite photo ... a little? I'm not done yet but I also don't know if I'm going in the right direction.

I came up with a strange way of doing this. It needs refinement but it is fairly close to what I want to do.

I created a spline polygon for the outline of the island and Boolean averaged it with a slightly larger sphere. I selected the top faces and used only those. Mapped the texture and set it to not cast shadows.

I have a full transparent sphere with a cloud texture and an alpha channel for transparency.

This is as close as I've gotten thus far. Suggestions or comments?

If you're looking for lava tips, watch the special features on the DVD for Star Wars Episode III. They're great (Can't say that for the film itself, though :/ ).
