Yes, although maybe alpha would be more accurate. I htink it's also the only version that works with 3delight 8.0 (I may be wrong). It's also got some bad bugs. I'm very excited about the new release, to say the least....

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could use a grayscale image to drive the thickness and length of hair. Would be an awesome tool.

In the newest version of Dribble you can use the opacity in the image as the length of the fur. I think it works with .png files. Here is a test I did last year.

BTW here is the list of updates for 1.04wip080808...

1.04wip080808

- Fixed "explosion" effect when rendering complex scenes

- Fixed environment not showing up in reflections

- Fixed environment lighting to more correctly represent light & shadow

- Fixed "cache override" to work with shadow map generation

- Fixed fur not inheriting the base color of the material

- Fixed fur only working for polygonal objects. Be careful when using with NURBS, it will generate a LOT of strands!

- Added support for mapped fur length, taken from the alpha channel of the texture in the fur material

- Added support for anti-aliased shadow maps, taken from the quality value

- Fur strand generation is now taken from a displacement shader, with the surface properties taken from the reflectance shader, allowing (in the future) different shading styles for non-fur/hair uses

- Fur shader rewritten, should be more realistic

- Fur generation direction now obeys the surface normal setting (smooth, faceted, autofacet). The old behavior implied smooth shading always.

I'm new to dribble so I don't know too much about how to use it, but have I been expermenting with the fur shader to create some grass renders, works fine, unless you turn on shadows for the lights and then it becomes too much for my computer to handle.

Awesome!

I will do some test and see how well I am able to map fur variations. I am new to Dribble and am exited about the possibilities.

Simon posted a while back that he was having computer problems. Hopefully he got those resolved. :(

I owe you guys an update, I'm working on it

It will happen......it has to happen.;)

I don't mind waiting if it fixes the standing lighting and gi bugs, and takes advantage of the 3delight upgrades. Simbiont support would be icing on the cake.:D

Simon gonna fix us up - I just know it.

Well, he done already fixed us up. I appreciates that.

But he gonna fix us up some mo, too.

Mmm hmm.

I don't normally talk this way. What is going on?

I push this thread up :)

well, today i started a few new tests with dribble & 3Delight. Because i would need FUR for my next project. What should i say - i'm really disappointed.

1. If i use fur - the fur himself looks great - but the object is transparent not solid (see picture below)...

2. I get no shadows and if, then only ray shadows. With Fur - absolutly no shadows to see...

3. The GI don't work correctly and also hdri has problems - maybe just on my machine or i'm to stupid to do the 3 steps from the tutorial correctly.

So, please tell me again why i should use dribble? Or espacialy why should i use it with 3Delight?

Is there any way to use dribble and his possibilitys with another render engine? And if yes, would it not be better to develope dribble in this direction instead of 3Delight?

I think dribble could be a pretty cool PlugIn and i would pay more money for an update but just if it will WORK and give me RESULTS.

Today i'm sad ... so as dribble is (or 3Delight) - i can't use it.

1. Same bug here.

2. Shadow bugs have been discussed already.

3. HDRI works fine for me, remember to have the Foreground Effects Shader toggled, and that you can only use spherical light probes. You also have to set the intensity to something greater than zero (it's easy to forget this step). GI problems were already discussed earlier.

Dribble has been very buggy since the latest 3delight upgrade, and unfortunately there is nothing we can do about it until it's fixed.

3delight is the most full-featured and reputedly fastest renderman renderer outside of prman, but I don't have anything against other renderers being supported.

I would obviously want to get 3delight working first.

Dribble has the potential to be the Vray that wasn't (better in some ways, except perhaps GI and other Vray specialties - it's all a moot comparison now anyway). I wouldn't write it off yet.

Is this for an animation?

If not just make a copy, one with hair and another without. Put one inside the other.

Yes, it should be for an animation and to use 2 Layers (one for the solid and one for the fur) was also my idea. But together with the shadow problem it is to difficult - i think - to get this to work.

Dribble has a great deal of potential and can get excellent results. It is a shame that progress on it has slowed down.

Have you tried a spotlight for the shadows?

Well the shadows are not the main problem - i talked about that in another thread.

The main thing (just in this moment) is the transparancy of FUR objects and also that i cannot assign fur to each face that i want. The fur works only on the complete object - that's also bad and it would be to (if not completly) difficult to use this as the base for a nice and cute animated character.

Anyway, i dont' would disguss this here, i would only talk about dribble himself and the relationship between dribble and 3Delight.

I believe that dribble has a lot of potential and i think that the problem is not dribble as more 3Delight and if no update comes for 3Delight to correct all these bugs i found it better to target dribble onto another renderer.

If i had to pay for this renderer - it would be ok, essential is that it works. But so far as i know can dribble only be used with 3Delight.

The problem isn't 3delight.

It's one of the most robust and bug-free renderers on the market - hollywood class. If you don't believe me, please post your opinions on the NDA forums - just remember that people that do td work for a living may not be as polite as folks here. ;)

Dribble worked very well around the time of 3delight 6.5, the problems have been since the 7.0 release. Targeting another renderer now would be silly as all it would result in is a slower release, less features and less speed.

Dribble has an option to export RIB files. So you should be able to use it with any Renderman complient render engine. The custom shaders are where it gets messy though, so you might have to swap out for shaders specific to the other engine or do your own.

The problem is that every update of 3del makes an update of Dribble necessary which we got in the past but for some reason Simon is somewhere

but not here at the moment. He had some problems with his hardware and he sent me a link some weeks ago but not much news...

I´d love to use Dribble more frequently though !:)

...ok, i dont't know that. Shame on me.

In this case i hope (and pray) that there comes an update for dribble in the next time to fix all these issues.
