This weekend I was looking though the latest 3D World at the bookstore. The monthly CD says it includes Truespace and a training video.

Then it goes on to say it also includes "two offline render engines for GL lighting and causics".

That threw me for a loop - What two other engines are they talking about?

I'm guessing one would be the virturalout ?

You should have a quick look at the FAQ section under the Tech section of the forum; there's also a good thread about the render engines somewhere which someone will surely find the link to, but basically the 'offline' engines are Lightworks and VirtuaLight, bith of which are covered fairly thoroughly in the manual and various threads round here. You can also buy VRay as an extra offline engine, but it's not pre-packaged as part of tS, it's an extra.

You can also export to Kerkythea and render there or buy (for a small price) Dribble, which is a plug-in that lets you render to a free RenderMan compliant renderer - you'll find much more specific info elsewhere if you do a search on some of these names...

Virtuaout is included and does indeed have caustics and GI. The other engine is Lightworks, which does not include caustics and GI. The wording means that the offline engines included give you access to caustics and GI, rather than that both engines have caustics and GI :)

HTH!

For reference that is not the latest issue (although it may be in US). In the UK we have another, more recent, issue (110) and the next one after that is due pretty soon. So that issue is nearly two behind the UK.

Not picking fault with your facts; just helping to avoid confusion should anyone want to order the 'latest' issue which, incidentally, has a review of tS7.6 in it.

tS CD feature is in issue 109, review in 110. Issue 111 due probably late next week...:D

P.S Regarding the wording about render engines; it does come across as misleading the way it is written in the article.

This is true, but you can do gi with lightworks with fast gi. It seems faster than virtual light. Virtual light has potential, but an almost complete lack of quality examples and training material make it very hard to learn. It's also a bit slow at quality setitngs.

There is also a lightworks shader called raycatcher that can do caustics (I think). The more I use lightworks, the more impressed I am with it's versatility. Very underrated renderer.:)

Geez I feel so stupid right now! I totally forgot that lightworks is a replacable component nowadays.

Thanks everybody for the replys!
