Hi, i'm back to ask some questions about Truespace, reguarding a new version. Sorry I was in some ways, abandoning TS for a while. I still like it, I just like the advanced features that lots of the professional's software has a little more.
Okay, here's the questions:
1. Will there be a TS 7.7?
2. How soon, or when will it be out?
3. What tools will be moved over to the workspace (from the model side)? All of them?
4. Will all the model side plugins work properly on the workspace when and if there is a TS 7.7?
5. Will there still be a modeler side?
6. Will there be more advanced and/or keyframable water effects, plants (customizable, and pre-made), a cloth system that you can keyframe and make clothing for characters with, and a fur/hair system (dynamic) with more properties like clumping, and UV mapping, and that doesn't add more polygons to the scene?
Thank you for your help.:)

We usually find out when they release just what is new. I think you will just have to wait until its here. Usually there are lots of new neat things, each version takes a bit of time to learn all the features, so I think its going to be a great surprise. |

That post put a smile on my face..it reads like a condensed version of the entire forum's top ten (6?) questions about tS' future.
Tamtam, there is only one person who can answer those questions and, considering they have not been answered before, I am not holding out much hope of you getting an answer this time.
However, thanks for stopping by to raise them again. |

THe Captain's Blog is by Roman, the big muckitee muck of Caligari. Read the Captain's blog and you should at least get an idea of the direction they are pointed... though since MS bought them up things seem to have changed some.

But I don't see "the Captain's Blog" anywhere I looked on this site. I did a search for that in the advanced search bar, and all that came out was Captain's Blog comments. I also looked in the blog section of the site, but I never used it before, so I wasn't sure where to look.
Thanks again everyone!:) |

Ermm, you searched for a blog, found it but somehow think you have not...
Anyways, Steinie provided a link and Rich is right about it's 'regularity' but Roman has promised to post regular.
I must admit that there was a touch of irony in my response Tamtam so, to save this becoming an excercise in repeatedly asking the same question, this is what I meant;
You disappeared for a while as you have found 'better' software...good for you. I have no problem with that but I do not understand these 'im leaving' comments people make when they find some new software. Most of us get by with several pieces of software without telling the manufacturer of each that we are moving to a competitor.
For years we have been asking the same questions and rarely (if ever) get an answer as new features are only ever announced just before release. Even the beta testers did not know tS7.6 was going to be free and found out at the same time as the rest of the world.
So, in a nutshell, 'dropping by' between programs to ask a series of questions that have been asked a hundred times before and then failing to find any 'blog' in the captains blog...well, I give up I really do.
Do bear in mind that the 'grass is greener' mentality does work both ways which is no doubt why you are back asking these questions. After all, you are now in 3DS/Maya/Lightwave etc. land looking over the fence to see if you are missing anything in tS.
Why not simply float between programs making the most of their individual features discreetly without these announcements that you are leaving to a better place? If they are so much better, why would you want to use tS at all? |

This is what I recall as unofficial answers to your questions...
1) Next up fixes for 7.6 and finally 8.0
2) No idea
3) You can count on lathe and path tools. Layers and Nurbs are a mystery. All future tools are being written from the ground up.
4) I think new ones will be needed to be written. Programmers were given the means to do it. Now it is a waiting game.
5) No
6) Already answered, when it happens it happens. |

We don't discuss feature sets or even release naming until a release is imminent. Been gone into many times before, but the core reason is that things always change between an announcement and release. This means that people get unhappy because:
Feature A isn't listed, so someone buys software for it, others just get upset that it isn't included, then Feature A actually makes it in the release. Everyone was upset for no reason. Those who bought software for Feature A feel upset because they didn't have to spend the money after all.
or
Feature B is listed, but the release comes out and Feature B was not polished enough to make it in. Now everyone is upset because we mentioned something that just didn't show up.
So rather than upset people with information that can only change (this is software development!) we keep quiet on it for the most part and only announce details when a release is very close. The Captain's Blog is the one place where some advance info is shared, BUT that is still speculative and the two possibilities above still apply!

How true! I remember Roman on 7.5 said some things which he wished he didn't but developement sometimes has a course of it's own. 7.5 was a great advancement for tS and had many news items not even mentioned but some of the items that didn't make it caused a few concerns.
With the SDK out, the amazing ability of tS via scripts and LE, many features can be added now by users. This is one of the most amazing neat thing about tS, particulary WS, you can make new tools, shaders, scripts, behavior objects with LE etc.. Not to mention even change and create your own interface for panels. Conform tS to what you want vice having to wait for someone else to do it if ever. Now I do understand some features just has to be at core level to build upon but the user has tremendous control and power over tS as it is. |

Hi TomG,
Not to sound like Im picking, but "features" are actually functions IMHO.
The danger lies in calling functions features...because form follows function, not features..
Function or functions control the programs operations. (standard)
Features is just a catchy marketing word to add value to a function that already exists and holds no true meaning.

Sorry if it sounded like I meant the "Captain's Blog comments" Splinters. What I meant was, I was looking for the actual forum category called "Captain's Blog", and not just the comments. There must have been some (or maybe a lot of) confusion when I asked the question about the Captains Blog, and my original questions.
Thanks Steinie! But I think Tom, and noko are right, that the functions (features?) are going to change, so I think I either need a lot to learn about the LE, or to just wait for the functionality to come to me (in ts).
Don't worry everyone, I still love ts, so I think it's about time I make some models in it! I haven't been using it, so now I want to come back to it, and try to learn the LE (i've never used it before, so I might have to look it up in the manual), because it sounds challenging, but fun! I want to try to make something with it. Of course, I will have to start small, and build my way up to being a somewhat advanced LE user.:) |

Aww, thanks froo, I must look at your introductory tutorial now! I might still need the manual as a guide though, or as a "just in case I forget how to use the LE" kind of thing. I will certainly keep that tutorial of yours on my computer, until I believe I can handle the LE completely by myself, which might be a long time. |
