Just doodling! I need to find better vegetation for my aerial "Yankee" scenes and came across this old plug-in:
3854 (http://tsx.uvworx.com/abandoned.html#treedo) <- (click on image for download page.)
for making trees and plants. It also has a stand alone version that seems to be a little more stable. It takes a little while to figure out all the different aspects of "growing" plants but makes some pretty nice results.
The statue in the temple and the pilot in my "Yankee" scenes were made using MakeHuman:
3855 (http://www.dedalo-3d.com/index.php?par1=LXfPCglTkrz,lTGgUBwGIBTUpzFlI&sec=80a900c749d186cdb953a4e5c912c650) <- (click on image for download page.)
Thanks to "Wizard" for mentioning this one in one of his threads. It's a fast and easy way to create characters for stills and animation with a surprising amount of control over the look of the final character. The clothing and hair controls don't work on mine and I'm not sure if I may have down loaded the wrong version, I don't know.
Anyway ... Crepe Myrtles, Palms, Ornamental Fruit trees, a really strange deciduas tree, and a fairly decent daffodil (I think). The leaves on the fruit trees don't really withstand close inspection. I couldn't change the leaf shape in the stand alone version but the plug-in lets you (I think) select an existing poly to replace the triangle leaf. The "temple" courtesy of the tS objects library.
The over exposed brightness was intentional. I was going for one of those unbelievably bright summer days, but not sure it worked the way I wanted.

That's some doodle!
I think my firewall is killing your 'images as links', can you give us the link to the plant creator as text?
I think I have MakeHuman tucked away somewhere (easy huh?, maybe I'll finally get around to installing it) but you could post that as a text link too just in case I'm not the only one with a paranoic-critical firewall. |

A very nice image, the light over-saturation is pretty convincing. I think it is all a little too perfect to be photorealistic, if that's what you are going for. The light makes it look hot and I wonder if you could make the shadowed areas appear "cooler" somehow. All in all, a nice one, especially for a 'doodle'. . |

Maybe a little more blue in the "reflected" light will cool down the shade. I'll try it.

I wish my doodles came out this nice. Do you have 7.11 and if so have you tried it in Player? Curious what this scene would look like with Bloom turned on.
I think I see Thomas Jefferson hiding in that right shrub...;) |

No on the 7.11 ... all 6.6 (I'm falling behind fast!). The over exposure was added with Paint Shop Pro 10 using the Soft Focus tool. It can un-focus the entire image or it can be used to add "glow" which I'm guessing is nearly the same thing as the bloom effect you're talking about.
Funny you should mention Thomas Jefferson; while doing this I must have been subconsciously remembering a really strange "plantation" I stumbled on to a long time ago on the top of Afton Mountain (in Va, not far from Monticello and apparently built around the same time). It was all Roman architecture, had some beautiful formal gardens, and in late spring everything seemed un-nervingly bright. I remember feeling really strange walking around the grounds.
Several years later I found out the property was being used by some private research group for the study of supernatural and extra terrestrial phenomena.
WIERD place! Next time you're in the vicinity of the Blue Ridge Parkway and I 64 in Va. .........
I didn't recall this memory until I started rendering this scene. |

Hey, VERY nice! I'm liking the well tended vegetation stuff - very nice.
I'm also pleased to see others having some fun with Makehuman - it's a VERY useful little program and, as you say is surprisingly versitile dispite a quirky interface. I've just used it myself to make a figurehead on a sailing ship....
RE trees for your Yankee project have you thought about billboards? Give the trees will be somewhat distant you may not need the high res vegetation at all.
Just another passing thought.... |

W!zard:
I tried that and it works for the distant trees but in the last image I posted, the trees looked flat and the shadows didn't seem to fit. Maybe a little variation will work for the close ones. |

It can take a bit of work but I've found that by starting with a lighting set-up I like and using multiple cameras pointing in the same direction relative to the lights you can then render a high res tree model for the billboard to eventually replace. That way the billboard tree is lit the same as the rest of the scen which can counter the 'flat' look you mention.
Another alternative is to make trees with multiple alpha-planes for the leaves - these will then cast reasonably accurate shadows without requiring really hi poly trees.

Ooooooooooo!!!!!!!!! I think I like that!
I'll try it , but with a slight "twist". I'll explain later if it works.
Thanks!
