Warning: shameless self promotion ahead!!
Have an interest in 3D and tS in particular? Have young children or relatives? Struggling to find a unique present for a niece or nephew? Looking for something more affordable than normal as a result of the credit crunch?
Why not give a Buddy World subscription?
Look at the benefits;
1. It is an affordable way to give a present (especially at the current rates).
2. You don't have to pick one book only to find it is not suitable. With Buddy World you get at least 20 and more for free as they are added!.
3. Presents are usually broken or discarded/out of date very soon after you give them but Buddy World keeps on growing.
4. It is a unique present unlike the usual socks/chocolate combo. No-one else has these books anywhere!
5. There are games and stories there that will educate or encourage shared time with children rather than 'vegging' in front of a console game for hours on end.
6. The content is kid friendly and safe; no worries about inappropriate images, videos or adverts.
7. It is all made in tS and I hope to eventually release packs of models so kids can make their own scenes with the characters and some free software that Caligari are giving away...and there will be free downloads too such as Pepe at the Movies wallpapers for your PC or phone...;)
8. Did I mention it is all made in tS? :D
9. No trees are chopped down to make paper for the books and there is no packaging. Buddy World is the eco friendly library!
10. You are supporting a vision for picture book delivery of the future. It is inevitable so why not start now so you can say you were there in the early days. (Buddy World in no way seeks to replace traditional books but offers an alternative method of reading them. Imagine you are confined to the house and can't get to the shops or a library!) If these books were bought individually in print format they would cost almost fifteen times the subscription rate!
11. Remember, once you sign up there are no more charges! There are no other costs, although I am working on the shop where you can buy merchandise but there is no charge for current and future content while you are a member!
A few people have been confused by how you can give a subscription as a gift but it is very easy.
Follow the Buddy World link and enter the site. At the Main Gate choose Sign Up from the left hand menu (feel free to read the FAQ's or take a Sneak Peek tour first just to check it is suitable)
From the signup page choose your subscription (Annual is the most cost effective by a long way!), avoiding the corporate one unless you are running this at a school, youth centre etc.
When you sign up you are taken to Paypal where you can pay anyway you like in the currency of your choice.
Once you pay a unique password is sent to you and your email is your user name.
I will make available a card template that you could give to the recipient is you wish. Inside will be the email log-in and the password which you can change to whatever you want. So although you give your email adress the password could be 'xmasgift' or whatever you choose. This way little johnny/Janey never forget who sent them it and can just as easily use it to email back a big thank you!!
And there you have it. At the end of the year you will automatically be charged for the next year unless you 'unsubscribe' which you can do through your account.
A gift that lasts a whole year and can even be shared by the family...what could be better?
Ok, shameless plugging finished (you can't blame a guy for trying though!)....:D
Hope you all have a great Xmas time. |

It may be shameless self promotion, but it's eloquent shameless self promotion. And great VFM too.
Good luck with Buddy World, Splinters. |

Cheers Johny, it has been 'live' for a few months now and people have been joining steadily but I only now feel it is 'complete' enough for a full launch.
Thanks all and I hope someone you know will find it interesting enough to join. It currently costs £16 for a full year ( approximately $32 or around 24 euros?) and works out about 80 pence per book of which each is available in two formats. Activities are just an added bonus!!

I'm lucky enough to have full access to 'Buddy World' and have had a good look around.
IMHO this is would be a great purchase if you have kids of the right age in your family.
(I was so impressed I brought the company) Victor Kiam reference
Good luck with your Christmas sales Splinters. |

Can someone please tell me how I can delete my own posts, so everyone else won't have to go through that trouble?
@splinters - Where's the link to Buddy World? I want to check it out now, so I can see if it suits the ages of my little cousins, or my little brother. |

tamtam, I would send you a PM but you have that turned off. I don't think you need to be concerned about 'serious conversation' via PM. If you feel someone is hassling you, you can report them, or add them to your ignore list. You can also PM Norm directly. He's the admin here, and is a good person should you need something resolved. Also, sending a PM is good if you have an idea and you want to share it with someone you feel you can trust.
Splinters provided instructions on deleting your posts.
Here's how:
In your post, in the lower right corner is a button: EDIT
1. Click Edit
2. in lower right corner: click: Go Advanced
3. in the top portion of the page (the Delete this Message portion),
Select the radio button that says:
Delete Message
You do not have to put a reason unless you want to.
4. Click the button in the middle of the page:
Delete this Message |

Excellent tamtam! You Did It! Good Job! WooHoo!
Now we need to get back on track with the discussion.
Buddy World Rocks! And that's a good price too, especially for a Christmas gift that lasts. :D |

Are you sure? You will kick yourself when I tell you...;)
Kidding aside, simply click on my Buddy World signature (big yellow writing at the bottom of each of my posts) it has a direct link there. The envision one takes you to my personal site.
Everyone knew that...didn't you?
Slaps forehead in realisation that he has not posted the web address any other way!
If you prefer the address it is:
http://www.buddyworld.co.uk
Thanks for all your interest again!
And Tamtam, given your interest in tS and 3D you might even like it yourself; I found a bunch of girls (around 16) reading them the other day. And then the cleaners found a 'prototype' Little Cloud book in my classroom and now I have to sell a few signed copies at work!! |

Glad you think so Froo. At 80 pence a book ($1.50ish) it is a steal presuming you actually like the books but there are usually at least two in each range so you should find something you like. Creepy Castle is the only exception as Little Cloud and Chonkyponk are standalone titles!
I would appreciate any feedback you might have about the 'sample' section. I have kept back most of the activities and there are no full books but that is the incentive to subscribe. However, if the experience is not inducive to sign up then please do let me know. I have tried to put all the links in (so you can see what content you would get) but it often takes a while to port them over once the appear in the members section.
For the record there are now 21 full books in static and flip formats (so 42 books then) and 18 simple activities as well as areas to explore and characters to meet. I have two more books ranges underway(DSD and Bob n Blob) as well as a new project. I am revamping the PLanet Hoppers (as you can see in the Buddy World thread) and adding several more activities in the next few weeks. I even plan to add blank pages where you either add pictures to the story or add words to the pictures..that way you can write your own and I will publish the best ones on the site!!
There are three seasonal Barn Buddies books (Easter, Halloween and Xmas) that will 'appear' next year (easter onwards). And I will soon be making Pepe Movie wallpapers available to download. There is also a cafepress shop link which I am developing.
So signing up now you get quite a lot and you pay nothing extra during your year's membership for Wip's new books, activites and anything else I add! |

Splinters... four words: Buddy, and World, and is, and awsome!
I think this would make a great gift for my little cousins, but my little brother is older than them, and i'm not sure if he's still into rhyming books. Although, I think your books are awsome, yet cute. I like the interactivity of Buddy World.
I want to ask you questions about 'the making of Buddy World'.
1. How did you make the pages in the flipbooks turn so realisticly? NURBS with animations?
2. Is Buddy World a combination of programming with the animations?
3. When you get to the part where you're reading a book at Buddy World, is the book actually a Flash game?
It's okay, you can keep 'the making of Buddy World' a secret if you want to. |

It's OK Tamtam, there are a few books that don't rhyme and besides, I still recite Seuss and enjoy it...never too old yet.
Question 3 contradicts question 1; the flipbook is a flash component kindly developed by ibrent (you should contact him for flash content; he is very good!)
2. No programming here and no real 'animations' other than animated gifs. It is all html and flash and lots and lots of rendering. Everything, even backgrounds and logos are made in tS probably starting with version 2.
I am not offended by anyone not signing up. It is very personal taste and it is really aimed at those with young kids who might enjoy sharing the content with them.
There are plenty of educational and moral topics in there such as loss, despair, alienation, bullying, friendship and many more. A responsible adult would be able to use many of them to build learning environments and activities with young children.
Some stories are just silly and other just for fun or whimsy!
All I can ask is that you 'try before you buy' and pass the info onto someone who might be interested.
I wonder, if everyone here told one person and they did the same etc.etc.
How long before everyone had told someone else??

Those are the highest quality animated gifs I have ever seen!:)
I will ask my parents to get it as a surprize gift for one or two of my little cousins.
Great work splinters!
Edit: Thanks for taking that paragraph out splinters. |
