I just ran across some 3d models from your photos type services and web sites on the internet. So here is how you find them.

go to www.google.com and enter the search phrase below:

3d modeling photo service

There are several of the web sites where you just submit your photos, and then they email you a link to your model and you can download it, and use it in truespace or other 3d program. You might have to first load it into some other 3d program as one file type, and then save it out as another file type, in order to convert to a file type that truespace can load.

From the example models made from photos, this web site seems to do the best, with very nice models, and textures.

http://make3d.stanford.edu/

After you click on a photo in the gallery to view in 3d, left click on the 3d photo model that loads. Then use the arrow keys on your keyboard for navigation, or right click and drag with the mouse.

Get a free copy of the Photosynth program from Microsoft which includes both a 3d viewer, and a Photosynth 3d photo modeler.

This is pretty neat, but the Stanford fee photo to 3d service still seems the best to me.

Unfortunately the Stanford site does not have any way to download the mesh made from your 3d photo. Maybe if enough persons asked, they might add such a feature?

I hope all the coders and programmers and scriptors will go to the site, because if you look around enough, you will find they have code they use that you can download and learn how they do it.

I am not too much a coder so its not for me. But how about getting all the Caligari programming staff to take a look at that code?

And wouldn't a good photo modeling tool for truespace8 be a cool addition?

Photogrammetry, camera mapping, projection mapping. Do a google search on those and you will turn up similiar things. THere are free and commercial programs readily available to do what you show and more.

VTour

Image Modeler

PhotoMatch

Sketchup

Blender

Cinema 4D

and every other high end 3D application

Photoshop cs3e and above

After Effects cs3 and above

You can even do some things in TS, but you have to kindof trick TS to do it.

I'll dig up a link for right here on the forums.

Thanks for posting that, gave me some more fun things to check out.

I can not find any photo to 3d ability in blender, and sketchup is cool with its new photo ability, but its trace over a photo, and use the textrue of the the photo, rather than a program that makes a 3d model from just a photo without you having to draw or trace at all, and free.

Yes there are a lot of high end programs that can make a 3d model from one or more photos, but its not free, and they are not giving you the source code for free either.

There is one low cost, about $150 plugin for photoshop, but one has to pay a lot for photoshop.

I would like to know just which program in your list is free and can make a model from a photo, without any need to draw or trace, because I was unable to find some of these when I searched. Where can I get it?

As far as I know most programs will require you to have some input. Do not dismiss Sketchup too quickly, I have been achieving some impressive results with not too much effort.

Getting something for free often requires you to do more labor than one of the commercial programs. The options I listed are all products you can test today.

Blender has the ability to do camera mapping, you should read up on that, I do not think it is the easiest implementation but it is there.

If you want to play around with something in TS dele wrote a plugin that can use 2 image files to rough out a shape, in that you only have to load a front and mside view. It is in one of the library's in the RsMain Library folder. You should give that a try. It is mostly for simple shapes and geometry but it does work...

Good luck on your journey.

I already tried Deles tool in the library. Its a bit too primitive in results for me , but its neat that he did get as far with it as he did. I hope he makes an upgrade to it. I certainly do not dismiss sketchup, and like I said, its pretty nice photo trace and use the texture of the photo. I have played around with sketchup before, and somewhat like the program, but prefer truespace over it, except for making buildings models. I will go try a copy of blender, and see if I can find anything on camera on it. Wonder why they do not mention blenders features on the blender web page? When I do a search for photo to 3d model for blender all I get is tutorials on how to load in photos that you model in front of, and I just do not get any demos on how to just load in a 3d photo, and have it make the model of it for me without me having to draw. So is that a buildt in feature you mention, or do we need to get some plugin for it?

If anyone knows of any real high quality digital photo to 3d modeling program thats free or low cost, please let me know because if I can get one that turns out good enough results, I would prefer to switch to that method of making 3d models. It sure would save hours of time.

hehe, you will never find something like this in the near future especially not for free or low cost.

Photomodeler is the program with the best results I found so far. There surface scanning from photos is amazing, not sure how they do it.

You can get superb results from laser scanning like done in the archeology since long time but a photo has to less depth informations stored even if you shoot a bunch or series of photos you will never get an exact 3d representation.

Of course I'm not a developer and maybe a genius comes up with a smart and clever idea like HDRI :)

I actually did get automatic conversion of digital photos to 3d models in a cheap program, but unfortunately its save object file was defective. It was a program by ulead, think it was called face factory and sold for $20

So I am keeping my hope up, that maybe we will get it even in the next version of Caligari, which while free for now, was a mid range priced program for years.

Then there are some plugins that can do it, and they are mid range priced, but unfortunately the programs they work with are in the $1000 plus price range.

Parva, you can get it free and low cost, just go to this web page and take a good look at all sections, because there is a place there where they tell how to do it, and even share the code to do it.
