How are you enjoying Modo?
Rich
It is a very cool modeler and a very fast renderer. I love it.
waiting for better animation tool.
I used to use Messiah back a couple of years back, I really enjoyed animating in it...I saw those in your sig, I guess everyone likes trying what is out there...
Rich
Messiah is a very powerfull animator and Arnold render type but it is lack of good documentation. And didn't like Ngons ...
I have a couple of favorites I enjoy toying around in also...
Rich
He he I use an other program also named X... ;)
TS is a cool program as long as the things you like to do are implemented in it.
Rich
Yes for sure

Well Uruguay has 3 millon people allover the country.. I can't imagine each one of us working with Truespace  hahahaha
Really, how many of us have downloaded Blender?? and how many of us still working with?? so thats just a number, that's all.
People that never used truespace needs years to learn it, plus, most of the 3d users that has tried truespace (and im SURE) they already use another 3d app..
Is very dificult to see someone that knows an app trying to learn again another 3d app.. For example I tried with Max, with Softimage, Maya and even blender... and Still here.. :D
So, if Caligari/Microsoft wants to catch more 3d people, i thing they must offer something else than just a free software.. must be offer a full package.
a Modeling tool like truespace is, a render engine, etc...etc...etc..
Blender is doing a very great job on that task... but hey! watch the list of features?!?!? its incredible...
In my oppinion if microsoft expects and is waiting for developers became crazy developing plugins (render engines, modeling tools, shaders ,etc) cos truespace is now free, i think they are wrong.. and pro developers knows the pros. are with other pro apps like max, sftimg, maya, etc..etc.. most of them used to make movies..
So.. im still convinced caligari/microsoft must offer something good for non realtime users and in other hand add the features that they realy care.. (realtime, collavoration, virual earth.. etc)
Just my oppinion.. |

I pretty much agree with all of this.
I've put two years into truespace and only really now do I feel comfortable with it, and I still learn something new every day. |

Downloading is one aspect, the other is who really use the program, or try/learn to use it ;) |

This is the point but with all these potential users who downloaded it, I thought the community here will be bigger ...

It's not finished.
Once they get all the tools over I think TS will be a great product. What is killing growth is the double wammy you get. Modeler/workSpace.
So new users are trying to learn TWO 3D programs and that is a killer. |

Forum participation and membership is one method of telling how successful a program is. I haven't seen any significant change in that regard.
Support from other Websites: That is, in the form of articles, reviews, promotions and etc. Again, trueSpace is not only in the backseat in this category, but doesn't even begin to qualify as a viable product recognition. There's not even an appreciable 'Brand X' status recognition for the software. (i.e. - the engine behind gamexxx)
External Development: Haven't seen anyone jumping on the tS band wagon in this category.
Major Graphics Forums Subsections: From what I can tell, there aren't any subsections on major graphics forums that offer support or tutorials. Having a section header with two or three outdated comments does not qualify either.
Just some examples, but in my opinion, the three million downloads makes it equatable or I should say similar to a browser down load. That is, it's free and most people will download it to check it out, but may never use it because of reasons (X,Y,Z)
These are my personal observations, so don't get your bowels in an uproar. It's not sugar coated. |

Yes Ok but you didnt say whats wrong and why !
Thats basicaly the important part of any statement in that direction.
What must happen to change that ?
Although most of us have adressed the lack of development of Vray nothing
improves in that direction.
We have the ability to use and make shared spaces but the server version
was taken from the market....:confused::(
All the activity in that direction on this forum has come to a stop (well most of it)
Some of the people incl Mark are gone because of that...
We are more then 4 years away from truetown (NY) and still have 2 architectures( model side and workspace).
I havent seen lots of morphs or lots clothmotion on this forum but simple tool
like revolve (lathe tool) are still not part of workspace....
I will say it at this place again and again... as long as there is no dialog with
the users this product isnt going to catch up.....
A good example of how it could be and how it works is how Moi 3d is developed with Michael Gibson always in touch with the users and constantly
moving ahead rapidly.
Thats my 2 cents

Forum participation and membership is one method of telling how successful a program is.
This is correct if you keep in mind that only a small percentage of users actually frequent the company's forums. I heard an estimate once that only something like 20% of users go to the forums on a regular basis.
We forget that around here and assume that everyone else gets their daily dose of the Caligari forums.
How many users are registered for these Caligari forums? Even if the number is a few thousand, that's not many compared to 3 million downloads. Even if you say only 100,000 of the 3 million actually use TS, the forum population is still a very small percentage of the total user base. |

Reality is: money spent on buying a software package is nothing compared to the intellectual investment you make in learning to use it. Making trueSpace free solves only 1 small hurdle, with the biggest one, learning to use it, still left for the uninitiated to overcome.
ts 7.6 will be very difficult to learn for a newbie completely new to 3D. The initial enthusiasm of being gifted a free 3D app will soon be overcome by the realisation that a GREAT DEAL OF HELP is required to even be able to start using the basics! |

I knew nothing about 3D modeling and am still dragging my hooves through the tS learning process. I didn't continue to stride forward and use tS after the first few weeks because of its instability between the Workspace and Model side with crashes and errors from bumping heads (and because there are so many other FREE modeler applications to muddle through). I've just recently began to play with it some more (because I really like its potential and I enjoy the Forum and its diverse humor from this family that is spread all thoughout this world and unite here with the same intent of enjoying the creativity of yourself and others ! During this process of trial and error, with far exceeding frustration through the instability and learning curve, I've re-downloaded tS 7.6 many times...and I'm sure that many others have done the same. Could this number represent many downloads by the same user, as compared to separate users ?
Some of the processes in tS are not as straight forward as you would expect (or hope for). I still can't figure out how to Boolean Subtract !...I've only recently grasped Boolean Union.
Tom G was a great help to me when I first started tS. But when I finally entered the Forums, I was greeted very negartively by some. I see a lot of talent here from those who have pretty much mastered tS and 3d modeling.....but I don't see enough help when it comes to sharing their secrets.,,,,even though I have managed to pick up some tidbits for directional growth from some of you that have "sparingly" described how they achieved their stage in their model (THANKS GUYS !:)). As far as asking new questions, sometimes it can be intimidating for a new user (like myself) because of the vast talent here (and sometimes what may seem like a straight forward answer from an expert, isn't necessarily a straight forward answer to a novice. I usually am a fast learner when it comes to deciphering new programs, however, tS 7.6 has proven to be an unforgiving challenge. The thing is, I really like tS, and I enjoy visiting these Forums. I get alot of good laughs here !!! I've always liked visual arts and music and enjoy the fufillment of the creative process. I also enjoy the shared talents of so many great artists out there. I've only recently diverted more of my time towards creativity instead of drinking and partying. I found out last year that I have life theatening conditions with my liver and pancreas....all due to decades of excessive drinking. If I didn't stop drinking, I was going to enter the next realm within a a short time. Since I quit drinking for around a year and a half now, my body has slowly started its healing process......my liver, however, is still dying. I do, however, have a good chance of beating that dilema. Now if I can only beat my tS 7.6 dilema !!! Too bad there isn't an opportunity to download 3,000,000 new livers !!!:p |

Hi Mr. 3d.
Boolean subtraction:
1. Select object which is the Subtractor
2. Select Boolean Subtract tool
3. Select object which is the Subractee (will be removed from Subtractor)
The subtractee will be subtracted from the subtractor.

I've downloaded a lot of free software over the years (free, not ripped-off!) and have never felt the need to be a part of their communities. Nothing as sophisticated as tS though. But there's the rub - if it didn't cost you anything and the going gets a bit tough (despite the friendly forum and the free courses etc) its very easy to give up on it. All it cost you was a couple of hours of your time. Nothing like cash out of your pocket to keep you a little motivated in terms of working out the problems that occur when trying to learn a new piece of software.
BTW I dispute the assertion that there has been no increase in the business of the forum. There was an immediate increase after the free release such that 2 or 3 pages of active threads per day became the normal for a while. It has dropped off since then but it isn't as dead as it was just before the free release. There are also a handful of new users who seem to have become new regulars. Not sure how many registered forum members there are but I bet only a relatively small number post on a regular basis. |

well everybody likes something free. Hard disk space is cheap. Why not fill it up with stuff, whether you use it or not? 3 million downloads does not mean 3 million users. I've downloaded blender numerous times and am just now using a section for a particular purpose. I don't read the forums there unless I absolutely need an answer. Though, I got an answer a couple times, mostly not. I solved my own issues most of the time and posted the result; though no one seemed to give a care. Ok by me! Apparently I was the only one needing an answer to the problem. hehe
I myself had to try 1.5 million times to download it; kept getting disconnected... Just kidding! |

Frootee,
I've got it now ! Thanks Again for your input. My problem was getting my Selct Context tool (I was trying to lasso in Model side) to apply. I switched over to Workspace and got it figured out now. The problem for me is, I started learning from the Model side, and I find it easier to model over there.....However, I like the added options in the Workspace side....the D3D glass shader, for instance, doesn't seem to Render in the Model side....but I don't have Vray to Render in Workspace. I find myself bouncing around from one side to the other in tS 7.6 in order to utilize something that I can't seem to find in the other side. Unfortunately, this is where I come into the instability issues (metaball, etc.). Fortunately, this too shall pass !!!...
As far as the topic of this Thread goes, I think everybody pretty much has a grasp on it. Besides the point that the same users have re-download on numerous occasions, many new users are sitting on the sidelines and posibly trying to learn the program before they commit to the Forum. Also, many download and save because it's FREE (just like quite a few other 3D programs out there). They then choose which program they want to dive into (if any). Some will just keep the download and never use it. Unlike many others, I dove right in...being that I liked what I saw !!! |

I find the metaballs to be extremely unstable. Sometimes I can play with them for ages without trouble, then they crap out and I have to start over. At least with 7.6 you don't get the bsod when they crash ts. It's a shame because ts's metaballs are quite good.
I also think the polydraw tool in 6.6 is bad as well. Ever since I stopped using this tool, 6.6's modeler has been far less likely to crash. I think this may also be what was causing the mesh-cancer that would kill my gamespace models.
Apart from these issues, I find truespace to be pretty stable. The fact that it boots up in a few seconds makes crashes a lot more bearable than other software I use as well. |

I think this software (present version) that runs this community has bugs.
If you look at the trueSpace Community Forums Statistics it does not make sense.
