December's community modelling competition, the MMC (Monthly Modelling Competition) is due to start within the next few days. This friendly, community run competition is open to all forum users no matter what their level of skill or version of software. Please don't be put off entering if your fairly new to trueSpace as the winner is selected by a community vote and as such, a good idea stands as much chance of winning as a good model or scene. Entering the competition will require that you start a WIP (Work In Progress) thread. There, you are encouraged to share your thoughts and progress (via screenshots) on your entry. Your thread will not only assist the voters in looking at all the various aspects of your entry (as opposed to only seeing the final render) but will also act as a conduit for receiving some great feedback and encouragement from the rest of the community.

As the winner of the November MMC, I get to pick the subject for December. However, in a bid to encourage even more people to enter this great competition, I'm more than happy to debate the choice of the next topic.

Currently, I'm thinking of one of the following:

World Of Bond – Characters, gadgets, cars, scenes, locations from the world of 007.

Villain\Heroes lair – the batcave, fortress of solitude, MI6 HQ or the ubiquitous volcano.

Steampunk – Where gears, pistons and valves are the prevalent technology in a future society.

Abandoned – Anything from a suitcase to an entire planet.

Or, for those with a total lack of imagination, we could always have a xmas theme. Zzzzzzzzzzzz. Sorry, dozed off for a minute there. :D

Anyhows, I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts on the December MMC topic and by all means feel free to suggest something completly different. I'm also happy to field any queries relating the MMC in general.

So, over to you as they say.

Hi saigoel. Wow, song titles, I would never have thought of that. Good idea, keep them coming.

Ultimately, the rules can be decided upon by the person running the competition but, by and large, it tends to stick to a familiar format. The rules are always posted at the start of each competition when the topic is announced and they will be very simlair to this:

Topic (plus brief outline)

Entries to be completed by (announce date and time)

Voting runs between (announce dates and time)

Rules

1.) Submission must expresses the topic. If topic is an object, then it must include at least one instance of the object which should be the focus of the image.

2.) Use your own work. No pre-made purchased or free models please. However, pre-made objects, as long as you created them are acceptable, but please state which objects they are and they can't be the main objects.

3.) Start a Work In Progress thread for your submission.

4.) The Submission should be one final rendered image (800 x 600) and a link to your WIP thread.

5.) Indicate tools used to create your submission. TS should be the primary application used to create the image. Post Processing in a paint program is ok.

It's important that everyone who's planning to enter start a WIP thread. You can do that by starting a thread in The Work In Progress Forum

Plus: If there is a tie then there will be a one day tie breaker poll. If there is still a tie then there will be co-winners.

I like the Steampunk idea or an over complicated device to do a simple job, kinda like the gadgets in Wallace and Gromit, loads of animation possibilities :D

Guess I will throw my proverbial hat in the ring for the next one. Topic makes no difference as they all seem relatively daunting to me :D

But if I am forced to choose I would say the Heroes/Villains Lair.

Yes its a speed challenge, usually 2 hours modeling time, sometime 3 if its a rather more involved one

textures and lights aren't in the time limit unless otherwise stated

but both contests are a great way to learn new stuff and to be given a gentle push out of one's comfort zone :)

Good thread Breech Block. There are many trueSpacers who should participate in the MMC but don't know how or don't know about it.

The prize for winning is the power to pick the next MMC's topic, your winning image in the winner's thread, and the responsibility of running the next MMC.

To run one you pick a subject and the dates for the deadline and poll and start a thread with that information and the rules in the main MMC thread. Also make a comments thread there and, later, the poll thread. The poll thread usually contains links to WIP's and shows the final images from the contestants.

All forum members can vote in an MMC poll. You don't have to be a contestant to vote.

I think future winners should provide less time for voting, maybe 4 days, so there is more time for modeling. Most of the voting probably takes place soon after the poll opens and when it's about to close.

The deadline for submissions, or the start of the poll, should be Sunday night for those who can only do TS on weekends. I didn't know this for Nov. 2008 MMC. :o Anyone know of any other things like that?

i like the abandoned theme, lots of possiblities, the hero/ villians lair could end up being to close to the fortress one a while ago. A good idea, but give it another month or two.

I like the abandon theme also. I don't think I'm quite ready enough yet to compete with the Steampunk pros here.

Thanks to all those that took the time to post feedback, much appreciated. The new MMC is now up and running and as you can see, I eventually decided upon the theme of abandoned. The reasoning behind my final choice was that opinion on the topic was split 50/50 between Steampunk and Abandoned and I thought that at least with an abandoned theme, there was no reason why those who wanted to make some steampunk style machinery couldn't still go ahead and then adjust their scene to portray it in an abandoned state. A sort of best of both worlds compromise so to speak. Anyhows, I hope you will all support and enjoy Decembers MMC.
