My old Wacom ArtZ II has given up the ghost and I'm not in a position to lash out on an Intuos at this moment but I need a drawing tablet. A guy at my local computer shop suggested a Capax which is significantly cheaper - see the link:

Is anyone familiar with this device? I've not heard of them before but is it really comparable to the Wacoms? I'm hoping to get some useful feedback from people who have come across them. What do you think of them? Positives? Negatives? Direct comparison with a Wacom? Would it be a good stopgap until I can afford an Intuos or do you have other drawing tablet suggestions?

I have a Genius F610 (I think:p) and it works great for me. Check Newegg (http://www.newegg.com) they usually have some good stuff. Including reviews and the ability to directly compare things. Click here (http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=296&name=Tablets) to go directly to the tablets section.

Thanks Robert. I'll see what else I can find out about Genius tablets and who distributes them here in Australia. At least I've heard of them!

I always go for Wacom when it comes to tablets. The new Bamboo is incredibly affordable if that is an issue, and has some good reports from users here.

HTH!

The more I read up about tablets the more I am leaning towards figuring out a way of getting an Intuos now rather than in 2 or 3 months time (after Christmas and the quarterly bills period). Hadn't realised until now how much I rely on a tablet until its not working anymore. 3D-Coat for example is very limited without one

Before the Intous2 I have now, I had one of those affordable units, I used it for a year. The Wacom is 4 + years old... These are some of the things I noticed when I got the wacom Intous.

Resolution of the wacom was higher by a good deal

precision of the wacom tablet was far greater

pressure sensitivity of the wacom is worlds better.

There were also ps issues with the cheaper unit

keep an eye on drivers also, especially if you are using Vista...

I put the Bamboo on my Christmas list. Amazon has it for $62.08 and free shipping. It is not an Intous2 but it is all I need.

Hiya.

I'm going to toss my 2¢ into the hat as well on the Wacom. I bought a 6"x9"(?) ArtZII waaaay back when they had just come out. I used it quite happily for years. I upgraded to a 12"x12" ArtZII(?) around 2002 or so. Recently (about a year or so ago) I jumped on the Corel deal of upgrading my old Painter to Painter IX and a new Intuous 3 9"x12".

I've gotta tell you, the difference between my old ArtZII's and my new Intuous is *LEAPS AND BOUNDS* obvious! It is so-o sweet to work with it and both Painter and ZBrush. I looked into the cheaper tablets as well...my conclusions were that they were just that: Cheaper. That's in price as well as quality, reliability and performance. Everyone I talked to who had used/uses tablets "in real life" all said "Wacom or nothing".

So...if I was you, I'd pay the extra $$$ and get a Wacom.

Plum, you are so right. I got the Intuos 3 9x12. Put unwanted pressure on the finances (and some people aren't pleased!) but it had to be done - especially given the drop in the value of the Australian dollar. The next shipment is likely to cost half as much again.

The difference between the old and the new is staggering - the timing of the purchase has been a bit of a pain but I don't regret it. Now I just have to do something useful with it! (Onto the next problem - why won't 3d-coat do a more sensible job of automapping my current character model......doh!)

I have the original Intuos (A5) and the new Bamboo (A6) and would always recommend Wacom, having tried cheaper alternatives. The Intuos has the function keys on the top and the easy switch between sensitivity is a godsend. Add to that it has a tilt feature which makes it great for airbrush work.

Bamboo lives happily in my briefcase for laptop use only.
