Loong time nothing done in scifi space genre so I take some freetime to model two spaceships.
Currently working on the Cruiser and put details on it.
tech details, windows, mark the gun turret areas, escape pod areas all that stuff.
The design is very classic this time ^^.
If the Cruiser is done I will show here the steps from the really basic shape to the different detail layers.
thanks for viewing.

Wow, very cool Marcel! I love a good spaceship! I really like the almost organic lines of the smaller vessel - well done. |

thanks guys! The ship isn't as complex as the ships from ZAON but it's fun to model on it.
:D hehe, Steinie that pic is funny!
The lighting... I used 2 lighting presets I posted in the german tS forum - link (http://www.3d-ts-forum.de/wbb2/thread.php?threadid=1219) |

WOW...incredible stuff sir..This is the kind of work that should be in the brochures for TS! Are those rendered with Lightworks then? |

I can't help but feel I've seen one very much like the smaller one before, were you inspired by anything in particular? In any case, the modeling, texturing, lighting, and rendering far outclass anything I've ever done. Excellent work! |

blush :o
I'm really sure that I'm influenced from many scifi models. Directly inspired.. mmh, don't know.
Yes everything rendered in Lightworks. Skylight and Infinit light are a nice combo. Like I said the presets are (nearly) the same like at the posted link.
Will update soon ;) |

Awesome! I am a sci-fi nut, so I love spaceships. Never have modelled a good one myself, though it's one of those "Oh yeah, one day I'll do...." projects hehe. Not that it would ever come out as good as these anyway!
Anyway, these are great, a real treat, thanks for posting - a tutorial would be just icing on the cake.
Thanks!

I know you're just joking Frootee, but does it get on anyone else's nerves when someone posts something like that and means it? It's always some thirteen (No offense to the perfectly decent thirteen-or-thereabouts year olds we have in the ol' TS forum ^^) year old who thinks he has a superhuman grasp of artistic realization. Then, you look at his artwork list and it's always empty.
XD Sorry, rant over. |

Parva has done a couple of spaceships a few years a go, I guess it's what he started with, thus the roots.
Awesome stuff Parva, good to see you are raising the bar again, keeps us busy trying harder ;) |

yes, Graysho is right.
The very first thing I made in 3d (and a Demo of tS 1.04) was a Spaceship.
Unfortunatly I don't have the picture anymore but it would be a good candidate to shocking you :D. It was terrible, like an ameba with a simple texture and a self painted star background *g* but I found it cool ^^.
Thanks again for the comments. |

Well, even if that first venture was terrible (I'm sure some of ous doubt that) these are awesome!
I'm another sci-fi nut and I love the detail on these. Like TomG, I've always wanted to attempt a good spaceship but worry about how lame it might look compared to great efforts by folks like you.
Keep it up! - intimidating us, that is ;) |

update from weekend
4050
I save progress in files like Scene1a, Scene1b etc.
This are the scenes from a to f.
Currently I'm at g.
Polycount is 84k. If it becomes too much I split up the details in layers (shown later).
Most details are on right site of the ship which will be mirrored later.
The red cubes are positions for the gun turrets.
The bottom two pictures are rendered versions. Left with a finished frontal mortar.
edit: little addition - a screenshot taken in Workspace.
I wished the DX display would be faster with many lights.
The results are awesome.

Incredible! And I'm suprised that's the quality you can get in the DX9 view! I must do more fiddling with it!
Also, have you seen the new Direct X 10 stuff? Like the new game Crysis? It's the coolest stuff I've ever seen, after that giant cruiser! |

Thanks for sharing some insight into your working methods. I note that you don't apply textures as you go which is interesting as I always do the textures and UV's as I progress.
Perhaps I should try your approach! It certainly works for you! |

Haven't seen the new Crysis videos yet but will do :)
@W!zard - yes I do all modeling first before I begin with texturing. Of course I do sometimes texturing tests during modeling but mostly I want to finishing the modeling process, set the lights in the scene and texture.
I think there is no right or wrong way to doing this. Everyone has his own steps to the goal. |

I find it quite problematic when I don't uv-map complex mechanical models as I model them. I have done models with hundreds of sub objects and 200-300k polygons, and mapping this mess at once is a nightmare. I wonder how you gonna map this spaceship. |

Well what do you know!!! and I thought I was the only one who went about UV-ing and texturing like this. Small world Huh!
Any chance of a larger view of the smaller ship Marcel???? PLEEEEEEEASE!!!!! |

a bit larger ;) together with a over-shoulder look, thought for an animation.
Currently some parts are still missing textures and no reflection/bump maps yet.
@GraySho - nothing special. I think plane/cube mapping will do the job. |
