How long do the blades stay sharp on that?
I have a heavy beard.
Joking of course. :D
Great modeling and texturing! Can't wait to see it do its tricks! |

these are awesome parva! i love all the detail on the cruiser...
tell me, is there a specific technique u use to add the surface detail on huge ships like this or do you just make up randome geometry as you go? i've done some ships but they dont nearly have this amount of detail on them... :) |

many thanks James, theuns and Scala3D!

at post #20 I attached a bitmap with some work steps.
At this ship I had modeled mostly random geometry yes.
But yes I have a library with some technical scifi/detail stuff I use sometimes for spaceships or other sf buildings.
It's good to have such a library with shapes, it does save time. |

i saw those and they helped a lot, tnx parva
and the library is a collection of bits you've done over the years right?
I also have object liberaires like that i use for modeling... need to expand it a lot for BIG ship surface details :)
any chance of perhaps sharing one of those hard earned collections with ship building newbies? ;P just a little one?? :) |

the library are more as one library and is pure chaos :D
I must clean up those librarys ... some time.
Here is a ts6 scene with some older objects.

Keep in mind that those details blow up the polygon count enorm.
The most modeler does create ships in detail layers means different layers for different distance view.
Close distance more details as far distance etc.
The guy who created the ships for Stargate and SG Atlantis had done it this way.
A technique I also use since years. |

WOW!!! Just look at those babies!!! My little library has VERY low details bits so I rely on details textures and bumpmapping... granted, mine is more parts than surface details but still !!!
How do you come up with the ideas for the detailted little bits???? |

Trial and error :)
It's playing with shapes. Sometimes I have a structur in mind but mostly I play just around and group objects together.
Looking at films or works from others can also bring ideas.
There are many ways.
edit:
here another project which is many month old with some details.
I had no time to make further progress:

here the short animation and a sample frame from the video (uncompressed version)
together with two shorties from the mounted cannon types.
11173
P.S.: does anyone know a video format that gives the best color quality?
I tried many formats, divx, quicktime, even mpeg2 hd but none of them
comes near the color quality of the uncompressed version
(black isn't black and the blue isn't like the blue from the original).
Techsmith is the only one where I can half the size and keep the quality (265->120 mb),
but still to large for web (10 mb would be fine). |

Awesome image and animation, puts me in mind of Battlestar Galactica in its look (the new one that is, not the one I watched in my youth!). If you just added shaky handheld camera style then it would be a match!
I've also had the pleasure of viewing this awesome model in real-time, incredible detail, and looks amazing in real-time too.
A final question, how did you do your jump drive effect, or is it a trade secret? :)
Thanks for sharing!

Parva, wow I am speechless. That is just simply amazing.... Your talant is endless....! Does Particle illusion work directly with TS or are the particle effects added using an Alpha channel during the post animation process?
Wow thanks for the inspiration.

PI is a standalone program similar like Adobe After Effects so yes post animation.
Position Exporter scripts are available for nearly every greater CG program. |

Veerrry nice Parva! - I can see why you want a vi9deo compresor that respects the colours! Beautiful work.
I've not had huge amounts of experience with video but the TechSmith codec is easily the best one I've used. |

jumping on the TurboSquid wagon...
the "Aiolos" Space Vessel can now be purchased (http://www.turbosquid.com/FullPreview/Index.cfm/ID/431170)
A good GPU is recommended due to the polycount (I run a 8800GTS and it's ultra fast with it)
but you can use the object freely so no problem
to use just the mesh and texture it for yourself to use in another program or software renderer.
Of course it was made for trueSpace Realtime DX Workspace
so I think you get a good quality spacevessel for realtime :)
I will maybe add more freeby and low cost objects in the future too ;) |

That is an awesome model, I recommend seeing it in real-time, it is a treat! Not only is it amazing to see the detail and texture and move it around in real-time, it also exports nicely to XNA, I dropped it into a simple example file and was able to fly it around using the XBox 360 controller, shades of Mass Effect I thought in its design - though this ship came out before Mass Effect ;)
Anyway, I consider seeing this model in real-time one of the highlights of owning tS7.6, one I was able to enjoy thanks to Marcel's generosity in helping us create marketing materials and do tests with XNA. It really did blow me away to see it, made me feel real-time rendering had come of age :)
Thanks!

What I appreciate about you is all similarities (except for my bad English).
The vision of animation, the same tastes, the same programs used (TS, PI) and ... the same name. :)
It is not necessary to go to Hollywood. There are many talents in France and Europe. if you do not work in 3d, you should try.
When i see Your AIOLOS movie, I remember a movie I've done a few years ago. It would have been nice to work together.
http://www.crea-vision.fr/html/animations/sonde.htm
continues to make beautiful things. I know how much this is exciting.
I just regret not having much time to help this forum like you. |

WOW! Fabulous stuff as usual. Your realtimes are better than most peoples renders - certainly better than mine. Reminds me I must buy that shader pack of yours ;) |
