As many members know there has been quite a bit of confusion over the current SMC  so I would like to run a poll that I hope may help all future SMC winners (winners choose the next topic).

The basic question is based around the idea that the community currently runs 2 types of "contests".

The MMC is a very broad contest in which a topic is given that allows the artist to use a lot of imagination, skills and a month's time to produce a final render.

The SMC is a faster paced contest (actually a challenge) in which the artist are asked to produce a model within a set time (usually 2 hours). The topic is much narrower than the MMC (or is supposed to be).

So I would like to see how the community overall feels about it. Feel free to leave comments also.

Thank you

Mike

P.S.

I hate "Poll options can not exceed 100 characters. Option(s) 1, 2 exceed this limitation."

I voted 2 but don't quite agree that quality can be any less because one chooses to go that route

I think i've done 5 ish SMC's and only one (bling) i tried to keep it simple and i hated both attempts

The film prop one i choose the hellraiser cube but all i saw was a textured bump mapped box.. so i had to try and do something more

But if it does boil down to a more focused challenge so be it, and I'll try and restrain myself lol

I can definetly see a problem of "how narrow?" coming. If the topic forces so basic a model that there is no margin for imagination then you get a bunch of cubes or spheres, etc. and pretty soon no contestants. So I think it is a very hard line to try to draw.

I would almost have to say a - "#4 --- Winner selects using their own interpretation of how narrow the topic should be" (should have made that one of the options) and then leave it up to the people who are entering. If they think it too wide or narrow they can either enter or skip.

I think "Melting Ice Cube" be very interesting to see.

LOL - Yes, but I think you would need to specify its dimensions and current temperture. :D

This is a discussion that keeps coming up again and again and will probably remain a thorny issue forever...

To me, the purpose of the SMC originally was to showcase good, quick modelling and not to take advantage of VRay etc to make a basic model look great. Clearly that's not the only way the SMC has to be, but if people want to make it just about the modelling and remove the presentational aspect (which does currently allow someone to spend an entire weekend lighting and texturing if they wanted) then we just have to kill the 'beauty render' requirement altogether - i.e. submit wireframes or realtime views only...

I do enjoy playing around with the presentation side of it, but would feel guilty if I spent longer on the lighting/texturing than on the modelling given the nature of the task. Even if we aim to vote on the basis of modelling alone, a great render may sway our voting...

There seems to be some perception that the topics have become more vague/less focussed but I'm not sure I totally agree with that as a generalisation - if the subjects were perhaps more specific back in the old days, the entries were still pretty diverse in interpretation.

Anyway, think I've waffled enough - my suggestions would be to either remove the beauty render (or apply time limit to that too) and stick witjh a 'modelling' based challenge - or change to a 'Speed Render Challenge' where the whole thing is judged, including the lighting etc - but this is likely to kill the speed side somewhat and make it more comparable to the MMC...
