For my next project I'm gonna need some particle effects, so I tried out ppfx, which is now free

Very cool plugin. I'm working on an explosion. Still needs some work, I'm not really happy with the timing and the look of the smoke. Will try some more.

PPFX is an awesome plugin, all the more awesome since it is now free. I found it easy to use, intuitive, and produced great results. Since it is a post-process particle system, it renders fast. of course that means it doesn't reflect or cast shadows, but that's a fair trade off.

HTH!

yes that looks great. Never got such a good result with this tool.

Little hint. There Partice Illusion is similar you can use the same fx alpha bitmaps also in ppfx. Maybe even adapt the whole settings. I'm not sure if the demo allows saving of this fx bitmaps but maybe.

I used custom made bitmaps for that explosion, the ones available were not what I needed. It took me quite a while to get it that far, as I started with 0 knowledge of the plugin. I think I rendered out about 30 animations so far, just to find out that there's something to improve and change. I might try particle illusion and maybe it's presets if they look good enough. I just like the possibility to have the particle system in tS, especially because it's going to be an animation.

I LOVE Particle Illusion! Check out this fire (Maybe it'll give you a few pointers, Graysho! You should go download their demo, it's got full functionality, but everything you render has a watermark. That said, it's a great learning tool!)

The fire's in DivX compressed format.

I've checked out the demo of particle illusion, very nice indeed. But it's a little pricy for just particles. The setup of the particles is quite similar, except there are no "super emitters" in ppfx. Would be very nice to have.

Anyway, I've tuned the explosion a bit more, and it looks a bit better now. I've rendered it within an animation, and it looks quite convincing.

The timing is good on the particles, and the fade to smoke is great too. I think some of the particles in the brightest part of the explosion look a little too much like forward facing sprites.

That's the problem with ppfx. All the particles are just sprites, and they always face the camera. I'd like the possibility to have particles create new emittors with different looking particles like PI, to overcome this problem. But it won't be noticed in the animation, so it will be fine. I could try to use a sequence of different sprites for shots where the camera is more static. I will keep this thread updated, and probably upload the emitter settings for you folks to try out.
