It's a series of steps as I explained earlier. Duplicate the background layer, add gaussian blur (radius ~10), has to be really blurry. Select "hard light" as blending mode. You might try others as well, multiply has a slightly different effect of brightness and contrast. It might be necessary to readjust the brightness/levels of the original background, as it tends to darken the image. You can also sharpen the original to keep the details. Basically it's just trial and error, but it shows how layers can be used to enhance photos/cg stuff.

Thanks for the input and insights. It's often difficult to see a picture with fresh eyes after you've been working on it for a while so all your comments are gratefully received.

It's interesting to see just how difficult it is to get a fantasy image to look real!

I have some fairly specific ideas about fairies that probably go against the common perception. I see them as real creatures, as real as any butterfly or bumble bee, and therefore I don't favour the idea of them magically glowing or trailing stars like Disney's fairies. Additionally, while I see them as 'real' creatures I also see them as being virtually weightless. They would tend to float about like an astronaut in zero G and their wings would provide manoeuvering ability rather than lift.

@ Kena; The colour of the wings is intended to suggest they are a continuation of her body, hence the earthy almost skin coloured hues. Her hands and legs are not pastel coloured so why would her wings be?

The overall theme of the scene (in my mind anyway) is to ask the question; if humans have fairies at the bottom of their gardens, what do fairies have at the bottom of their gardens?

I've deliberately made no real attempt to match scales accurately between the various elements as I want the scales to be slightly ambiguous as this can attract the eye - exactly how big is that wall?

The wall represents the end of the human garden that belongs to the house. The bare dirt represents a wasteland and the area between is the magical zone where fairies live between the human world (the garden) and the natural world.

I'm not sure how successful I've been with this image if I have to explain so many of the different artistic choices I've made. I think that there is such a strong collective mental image of fairies from childrens stories and movies that presenting my own individual interpretation raises more questions than it answers - or something!

@Graysho; I like your softening effect very much and intend to try it for myself before calling this picture finished. I'm also thinking about rendering just the two fairies by themselves so I can perhaps add a subtle glow or softening to them as seperate elements. I'm still exploring that aspect of the picture but thank you very much for taking the time to illustrate your point so well. it's very much appreciated.
