If I try to revolve an open curve into a surface of revolution, the curve gets automatically closed and a solid gets swept out. I don't want this.

Does truespace handle 2d-surfaces or just really thin 3d-solids?

How to?

(Yep, I'm new to truespace 7. I used truespace 5 a lot but only for modeling simple geometric shapes for a differential geomtry class)

For tS NURBS use, the best bet is to start with this series (http://www.caligari.com/products/trueSpace/ts5/Courses/Newnurbspage.asp?Cate=Training&Subcate=Fundamental) of video tutorials.

For some more video tuts on modeling with tS NURBS also see these. (http://www.caligari.com/products/trueSpace/ts5/Courses/Newnurbsdesign.asp?Cate=Training&SubCate=Older)

It should handle open 2D curves just fine... not sure why it's closing them on you. The order which curve you have selected/ and which you click next makes a difference in the outcome of the loft/rail operation.

If, after watching the vids and you still have questions maybe you can describe your method in more detail we can help pinpoint where it's giving you trouble.

No promises on exactly when since I have a feeling it's going to be a busy week!

Yes it does but you need to use a trick !

You always get solids but you can delete the walls.....

make your open curve then revolve it and the internal walls that

it creats simply delete them with the delete face tool.

Even in a dedicated nurbs tool like Moi3d (Rhino spinoff....) it makes

a top and bottom lid that you have to delete.

You then use the offset thicken tool to make a thin wall....;)

Truespace doesnt have a lathe - nurbs tool like Moi 3d

but it has a thicken command called shell tool that works with polygons...

If you want a nurbs result that looks like a revolve you need to use the Loft surface tool. Images show the sequence.

Image1 - create a circle and rotate it so the circle "end" is near the curve to be lofted. You can see the end by going into the edit mode for the curve. The end is selected by default.

image3 - move the curve so it's geometric center is centered on the circle. If you skip this step truespace will move the curve for you and it may or may not do a good job of it.

image4 - lofted result, now you can adjust the shape with the curves or convert to a plain patch.
