This is not at all what it started out to be! I need a really spectacular explosion for the next step in my scifi animation so I started working with tS partical plug-in. It didn't take too long to realize that there is a bit of a learning curve to make them behave the way you want so I did some experimenting.

Here's the result:
4075 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeyjgvHcv_Y)
Thumb is linked to YouTube video hosting but
here's the link for those of you with vigilant firewalls and such
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeyjgvHcv_Y

Sorry about the quality. The YouTube conversion caused the audio to lag by about a half a second, but that almost makes it more realistic! A 75meg AVI dosen't compress to a Flash animation very well but I wasn't trying for a finished animation anyway!

Enjoy!
Paul

Some very nice explosion you got there. Looks like big fireworks. The delay of the sound makes it quite realistic, like distant explosions. Did you use trueParticles for that?

Thanks for all the comments. Isn't it strange how sometimes things you produce out of sheer boredom can have a bigger impact than some of the stuff you work on for days.

TrueBlue: Not a pyro-technician myself, I used to be more of a pyro-maniac until I almost blew my face off with some MOSTLY successful home made fireworks. I decided to regrow my eyebrows and leave the firework creation to the professionals after that.

This way gives me a way to create some cool displays, but in safety!

To all looking for video hosts for animations. I tried Revver for this animation but their conversion butchered the video even worse than YouTube.

Thanks all!
Paul

I was really surprised not to see this in the January animation gallery.
I hope it was just because you didn't submit it.
The time delay in the sound, while an 'accident', was key to the impact of the animation.
Carry on!

Yes fireworks are dangerous. I'll never forget the time I fired a 18" from a oil barrel on top of a tug boat in the middle of the San Francisco Bay. It lit up all of San Francisco. Can you say Kaboom?
Sure would make a nice tutorial Paul. Hint Hint

Yep, but it looks as though I should have. It looks like more effort was spent this past month on stills. With only two examples in the gallery, I'm guessing not too many of us submitted animations in Jan. If I can squish it down to a 12 M file maybe I'll submit it for Feb.

TrueBlue:
The Navy's display for the 4th 1988 in San Diego had a similar mishap. One of those huge garbage can sized mortars didn't launch and blew up on Coronado Beach. Most of the spectators oooo-ed and aaaah-ed because they thought that's what it was supposed to do. They didn't realize it almost blew the heads off three of the guys giving the show.

Tutorial on what - How to make fireworks with particles? - or Things you should NOT do with 160 grams of dynamite?

Probably fewer animations because we're all holding off for 7.5. :D
