I was looking for a good software to create physics simulations. Doing some googling I found Blender, then at that forum there was a user talking about trueSpace. He said the physics engine for trueSpace was better and the learning curve easier.


So yesterday I downloaded the 7.6 version. I've been spending the last 12 hours trying to get used to it... reading the docs, watching the videos and experimenting with the UI.


It's not easy at all (at least for me), but I think it is a very impressive product. And it is for free... so nothing much to say.


I hope to get used to it in the next days/weeks so I can be productive with the tool.


I'm missing a good tutorial related to the 7.6 version. I've found some tutorials but they are for older versions so the whole thing is a little bit confusing for me right now.


Anyway, trueSpace looks great to me. :jumpy:

Flipo, as far as tutorials for older versions, the buttons between those and 7.6 are pretty much the same. Just use the model side. I find truespace very easy.

"Just use the Model side" - hmm but you'll miss out on an awful lot if you do (collaboration, stunning real-time engine, improved point editing with heal and edge loop selection creation and more, much higher poly counts without slowing down, greatly improved animation, vastly improved bones and skeletons for characters, and more).


Just to say, where tS really shines is in the workspace! To not use it would be like not taking your car out of first gear ;)


The Organics modeling course is a good intro to the workspace side of tS and is highly recommended.

The whole problem with that idea is you would need to find someone to do the tutorials that:


1) was helpful

2) knowledgeable on all aspects of TS

3) was fluent in Spanish


I have no idea where someone like that could be found :)

I understood from other posts that the model side was going to be discontinued and it was better to get used to the workspace.


Anyway, I'm reading every paper and watching every video I got. trueSpace is very addictive :p


By the way... do you have any idea about the units used in the mass property of the physics? Are they grams? kilograms?

Estaría bien. Pero prefiero trabajar directamente en inglés. Existen muchas traducciones en informática que no son buenas.


That would be great, but I really prefer to read and listen to the videos in english. There are a lot of software related weird translations out there.

Saw trueSpace 2 mentioned in "3D Graphics & Animation" by Mark Giambruno. It caught my interest as a low-price 3D program. Later I was able to use it through the high school.


While in college I got an email offer for 4.3 with the Frank Rivera book "Inside trueSpace 4". I got it at a nice price

I cant remember, It was so long ago, (Since 1994 if I recall)I think it was right after toy story came out at the movies. I was involved with facial animation in verion 4, I think. I also was invoved with beta testing the Pioneer VRML version of TrueSPace. VRML kind of died out after that.


I do remember that this image was one of my first renders.

I fumbled with graphics in a dos world. But I did have a nice amber screen :)
Once windows 3.11 came along, I began to find little software packages to do graphics with .... by the time Win95 arrived, I was on the internet and searching the world for graphics. To this point in time, 2d was all I was aware of.

Research led me to the Caligari website and an email address. trueSpace SE was arriving on the scene. Bibiana emailed me back, I called Bibiana and she offered to send me a cd of trial version. Talk about customer service! That was unheard of in those days. Heck I didn't even own a cdrom drive yet! I ended up buying a cdrom drive so I could give trueSpace a try. I was hooked the first day I installed it. So I ended up buying trueSpaceSE and explored the software and the manual. At that time I was very impressed with materials and ability to bring in 2d images to texture 3d objects. It was amazing!

I couldn't afford ts3.2 or 4.3 but was allowed to beta test ts4.3 upgrades and then ts5 onward. Back in 1999 I believe it was, I was taking a chance by going back to college again for computer stuff. It was going to take all my monetary resources and a couple of loans to do it. Roman was very kind and thoughtful to offer me a part-time job answering tech support emails. It was that part time job that litterally allowed me to eat during college (well a couple of beers every now and then too :) ). Since then Roman hired me full time and rest is as most here know it.

The community was always active and I enjoyed that. I was into online experience and joined the tsml (trueSpace mailing list) as well as mirc when it came about. Then the forums came into the light. I remember it was a difficult decision to bring forums into play. What would happen to the tsml? Folks were pretty amazed when we could post images to the forum and easily read posts in an organized fashion. The community grew and became what it is today. Just a great group of folks I have to say :)

I have really been blessed to be part of this company and community. There are so many times when I just sit back to read forums and view images and it takes my breath away to see it all come about. It has been a great voyage all this time and I look forward to it continuing to grow and develop.

I am not sure about unit of measure but I think mass is related to scale of object.

Having watched TS develop over the years, and waited in the wings, finally character anim tools became a realistic option a year ago, and I "bought in" to Roman's vision. I've always liked the interface and workspace just made it even better.


Equally important then as now are the guy's n gals that make up this forum. The users of TS are in my view unique in their selfless and enthusiastic attitude to helping out users of all levels.


Another draw to TS was the input of Roman to the forum, a fairly unique relationship in the online 3D software forum world in my view, and one that had a lot of appeal to me. Sadly over the last year this feels like it has declined, presumably due to workload and changes at HQ. However it remains important to me as a user who wants to feel that I haven't just bought a piece of software, but have also joined a community of like minded friendly, knowledgable and enthusiastic users, of whom Roman is the father figure, and who's software ideals appear to be so much in line with my own.


Since joining the forums the input of in particular Tom and Norm has helped to cement my faith in Caligari, and I thank them for their continued input and what sometimes must feel like a thankless no win task. It IS appreciated!


Finally the concept of online 3D collaboration to me is just truly awesome, and to this day I gasp at this underused TS ability. If only I had the tech head to polish this fledgling capability, no-one would see me for dust at the unique possibilities this would open up. The lack of user uptake of this capability will always leave me bewildered. How I can see the potential of this aspect and so few others appear to I find completely baffling, but when it comes of age, I definitely want to be on that "bus"

I was introduced to trueSpace in a high school multimedia class in 1996... I liked the interface, and I liked what it was capable of.

Over the years, I've tried out many other packages. Most of them I didn't like the interface, or the capabilities weren't there. Some are simply too expensive, costing more than trueSpace did even when tS was a package you had to pay for. trueSpace's interface makes sense to me. So even though after all these years I'm still far from having mastered the skill of 3D art, trueSpace is my first choice for modeling.

I got into computers because I wanted to record my music. I tried a copy of Terragen from a magazine cover disk and was instantly addicted to rendering 3d images! Dabbled with several free 3d modeling apps including trueSpace 3.2. I was originally disheartened by the learning curve and so my initial forays into modeling were with Anim8or.

I learned a lot of 3d basics with Anim8or but soon outgrew it so I went back to trueSpace 3.2 with a much better idea of what I was trying to achieve. Once I started to remember where specific icons were and what they did I was a dedicated trueSpacer.

I bought a second hand copy of tS 5.1 from a fellow kiwi (older users will recall Nigel AKA 3dkiwi and his trueSpace music machines). Since then I've won upgrades in the Caligallery until tS became a free product.


Choosing trueSpace over other apps was a no-brainer - it was a good price for a poor struggling artist like myself, it had a really cool interface that appealed to my inner artist and best of all it did most of what I wanted it to do. It was challenging and fun and frustrating and rewarding all at the same time and I loved the mental stimulation and of course the great social interaction here in these forums.


I have several other 3d apps including the latest release of LightWave which is a damn fine bit of software - I still prefer to use tS however.


I was never a big NURBS user and I find the Workspace modeling workflow to be slicker than a greased weasel. Although it still lacks many Model side tools it's made up for by the stability and usability of the modeling and rigging tools - even the oft criticised UV editor is a joy to use once you learn the easy way to use it.


Illness and other commitments (plus the fact that it's high summer here) mean that I've not done as much trueSpacing as usual recently but I'm very keen to get back into it.


I use the workspace almost exclusively for my modeling. I use the DX9 realtime renderer, the Vray and the Lightworks renderers in my animation project and I consider each of these rendering systems in the light of what they CAN do for me rather than what they CAN'T do. For me it's never an either/or situation - it's not about the tool but the pleasure of creation and the joy of enjoying and appreciating the final output.


To my mind the thought of limiting myself to one rendering system and one interface (modeler versus workspace) is simply self denial - it makes as much sense as tying one hand behind my back when I could use both hands. For this reason I'm one of few users who consider the Bridge to be a great asset rather than a hindrance - but I'll not get into that now.


Why did I choose trueSpace? Because it ROCKS!:banana::banana::banana:

I played with TS3 some years ago...(during the TS5 years). My dad owned a copy of Ts3 as well as a user manuel. I was very well interested in creative art since I can remember. I was around 14 years of age when I wanted to get into some 3D art. After experimenting for some time, I got used to the interface and the tools and the like (heheh, I'm still currently learning). It's so easy once you really get focused into it. After awhile I bought TS6.6 during a thanksgiving special back in '04. I'm still currently playing with it. And the rest is history. I've still yet to actually create a full organized rendered image lol. But going to school and working abunch brings you down sometimes. It was a little easier being creative when I was younger.

Always been interesed in 3d and when I saw a copy of TruespaceSE software (I think it was CompUSA), I had to have it and I think it was around $99. I liked the way you could quickly draw cubes, spheres & etc and texture them and render them from the same program. The shadows and reflections form the software where great. The rendered images were way beyond anything I believe you could buy for a PC. The SE printed manual was excellent and I still have it. I did not really care for the interface as I was used to pull down menus. so I waited until version 6.6 to upgrade. I still don't believe that there is a better modeling and rendering program as I have tried almost all of the demos out there.

I was taking a drafting certificate program at the local college. I wanted software that was compatible with my autocad files. I was using animation master for animation at the time and the spline workflow of a:m was not compatible with autocad. So after some research and pricing I found that truespace 6.6 and the conversion pack was my best bet. I was able to get it at student price too since I was in school so it was a good deal. I used it for about a year when I was in school, and used it occasionally after school, but went back to a:m as my main character animation software. It wasnt til 7.5 was released and I got a letter in the mail with a special offer for upgrade. So I checked out the demo for the new architecture and I liked what I saw, I went into shared space and bumped into paul ashington and he showed me some real time stuff and I knew I had to have it. So I bought it shortly after. And the rest is history :)

My first contact with 3D was POVRay wich was (and I think still is) simply a raytracer called from the DOS command line. The scenes had to be coded (think XML) and I was doing entire animations with batch rendering and libraries including the animation data (position and scale etc. for each frame). Unfortunatly I´ve lost all my stuff from that time. Then with windows I bought a cheap but nice little Software called Highlight Pro which had a graphical interface already. It was very good at animation but I soon felt the Software limits to be restricting my ideas. At that time I was looking for alternatives like Monzoom 3D, Realsoft 3D and trueSpace. I finally decided to buy truespace 4.3 because it seemed to be quite capable for the price. Since then I´m using tS along with other programs. IMO tS has reached it´s best year with the release of tS 6.6. I especially liked the material editor with it´s free plugins simbiont TS and Shadermagic and the interface. It was quite complete. Since version 7 I feel that tS suffers schizophrenia (Model/Workspace, bridge etc.) but I recognize that it was necessary to build a new base for future releases.

I had a very busy year and couldn´t do much. But I´m still around and watching the progress, ranting sometimes about tS and it´s quirks, but that´s because I care for tS and not to bring someone down. I just can´t let go and would like to see tS as a solid piece of 3D Software, healed from it´s sufferings :D

Once upon a time....I got a computer with Windows and MS Paint. It was fun, learned how to use them. After a time, wanted 'more capabilitiy'. Opted for a paint program with layers; Used it, liked it but still desired 'more'. The search began for something else, 3D. Searched and read. Downloaded some demos. Nothing seemed to click until I downloaded version 4 of trueSpace. This I could understand and work with, seems like it was but an hour before I was looking to buy it. Days, weeks, months and years passed while dabbling in 3D since then.

I bought tS SE from Hastings books and video, the nintendo 64 was just around the corner...tS 3.x was out(3.2 I think) I was fascinated by the texture painting I saw on the cover, but could not afford it..the whole reason I bought SE....ahh yes, the tricycle. Anyway, I finally upgraded to 4.3 after many years, like 1 year lol...I was a little slow. tS4um was a big pitstop on the net for me, the forums at the Caligari site were very...limited, I remember for the longest time we all wanted a particle system, sorta like asking for an internal unbiased renderer now a days. I bought tS 6.6(and every plugin...like $1600.00 in software) in Iraq(Ex-ARMY guy, NCO) I also picked up some programming...blah blah blah, in the end I liked tS because it was relatively simple to use, they always had a demo version that you did not have to jump through hoops to get, and I never felt out of place(noobish)in the forums. I'm not around much now, no development updates, missing or broken features, lack of a renderer, and the oddball crashes. I still love the software, but I have out grown it's current state. Maybe I will be back if there is a patch or when 8.0 comes out, but who knows for now I just litter the forums with my text.

After a few years of building maps and simple game mods using my own Photoshop textures and other peoples 3d models I wanted to make my own content so I started looking for software and after the initial shock of the high prices I asked around and found blender. And I hated it but I had been hooked on 3d and after a while I began looking again and found Truespace 3.2 while surfing the web. Went and registered it at the Caligary site and made my first models and a few animations. I fell in love with the tools and the interface. I even liked the IK that most seem to hate. Admittedly it was frustrating trying to get it to work using mostly trial and error,PDF manuals and available tutorials. Then upgraded over time with every release until the long awaited version 7 came out.


Over time I had paid a pretty penny for the software but it was well worth it even though I was disappointed with version 7. When you use software and work hard to produce your best and then get stomped on and put down by the artistic community for not using Max or Maya and the long list of others that think they are better. You end up defending your choices and the software along with it. I had just hoped for more power to model, animate, texture and most importantly the ability render photo realistic animations. just to gain a little ground on the rest of the world.


Don’t get me wrong if it had not been for TS I would have possibly never taken those first steps into 3d and found my real passion for this type of artwork. No mater what I will always be grateful to Caligary for that. And I still have a little hope that one day I will still get that version that will blow my expectations away. If anyone can MS can. That is if old bill don’t just dump TS in the garbage can and actually put a little into it.


So to make a long story short I fell in love with TS from Day one. ;)

First time I bought tS5.2 because tS5.2 is the only 3D software I can afford.
After I recieved my tS5.2 for several weeks, I stopped using it because its not stable and I switch to Blender.
Latter I go back to tS6.6 because tS5.2 render result is better than Blender render result. Then I upgrade to tS6.6, wish the bug on tS5.2 was fixed on tS6.6, but I wrong because the bug on tS5.2 still exist on tS6.6. So later after several weeks, I learn how to avoid the bugs been trigger and keep using tS6.6.

I upgrade to tS7.0 because VRay render engine. And now maybe I don't have reason for choose tS8.0 when its release on future because Caligari stop selling Vray for tS. :(
