Hi all,
I thought it was time for another mech (maybe coz I'm a glutton for punishment)
But this time round the plan is to make a more stylised mech instead of the more
industrial look that my warehouse mech had. (if your new to the forum and want
to see my other mech CLICK HERE (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=546)) the watch words this time are :- clean edges
and shiny, shiny, shiny. I don't want to give to much away yet but the clues are
in the title of this thread ;)
Just a leg so far (and yes I know its not shiny yet:) ) but that's how the first
one started so hopefully I'm off on the right foot. (GROAN:o )
Stay tuned for more soon and feel free with the comments and crits, as it was
your input that made the warehouse mech such a success.

P.S. I will be also posting W.I.P's in the new trueplace W.I.P. gallery as this project progresses. |

Your known for your texturing skills but man you know how to model too!
I'm glad your going to post in truePlace W.I.P., I hope that catches on here with others.
Well we're now here waiting for your next submission and I have front row tickets and sitting next to Hemulin!:D He's noisy with the popcorn....
Is this going to be a Devil Dog, Devil in the Details, Devils Delight, Jersey Devil, Devil of a Time, or some hmmmmmm.......Brachyura? |

Strangely, the shape and the "What the devil" comment make me think of a Dust Devil vacuum cleaner... looks good, though, and I look forward to seeing where this is going.
Or, yes, a horse hoof, as JamesMC suggests. |

Looks very interesting, and you know how to add suspense to your work, by telling not too much how it's going to look like :) I imagine a a hybrid devil mech, somewhat out of symmetry. |

Nice bio-engineered cross between a ram's hoof, crab claw and Hoover vacuum. I guess real world engineering won't apply so I'll just watch! http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/images/icons/icon14.gif |

Well... I was going to wait until I had something a little more advanced before posting again but I had to thank you for the enthusiastic response to such a simple W.I.P.
Your known for your texturing skills but man you know how to model too! To kind sir... to kind :)
LOL Great bit of flash there James, made me really chuckle :D
Nice looking work there..I am envious for sure. Might you tell me what you used to make the leg? Nurb or primitive..ect... All done with point edit and subdivision surfaces. So far its about a 50/50 split between TS and Silo for the modelling.
Thanks to everyone else :D
Here's the new W.I.P. The only real difference is that I've blended in the top pivot to give it a more fluid look. And I thought that rjeff might appreciate a glimpse of the mesh (in the player).
thanks again, more soon.

thanks for the wireframe...man my little jet really stinks when I see stuff like this. I try sub-surfaces and all I get is a messed up ball or something that is not nice and smooth. |

Wait a minute rjeff, you're not being fair to yourself. trueSpace whatever version has a definite learning curve. Assuming from your join date, MadMouse has been working with these programs a lot longer than you have. To compare your model with his is not fair to yourself. Your fighter is pretty exceptional for a new user and you seem to strive for better results. That attitude will carry you far. It's only a matter of learning the particulars of the software.
Everyone here has gone through this learning process (and here's a flash: It never stops!) and trust me, many mangled spheres have sacrificed themselves in the name of education. Don't let someone else's experience deter you.
... not hijacking the thread ... I'm just saying ... |

Thanks for the encouragement. The problem is that I have had TS since v4 and I still feel like a rank amature. Now at the same time I guess the effort I have put or not put into it is the issue at hand. I agee it is a learning curve and in my case I think it is a hairpen one! |

The trick is to read forums and articles that are not trueSpace or software specific, to learn more about CG. If you want to know more about subdivision modeling, check out http://www.subdivisionmodeling.com. Knowing that the "add subdivision layer" button adds a subdivision layer is not the end of the story. It's just the beginning. There's a lot of knowledge to be found on the www, you just have to look for it ;) |

Yep... I couldn't agree more with 3dpk & GraySho. Its one of those hobbies that the more you put in the more you get out. I've spent hours and hours of trial and error learning to model and texture and a lot of the time, at the beginning, I was without a net connection so it was all done from any books I could get hold of. If you could of seen some of my first attempts you would of wet yourself laughing. The one thing that improved my work more than anything else was posting in this and other forums, and of course reading other peoples threads. My advice would be post lots of W.I.P., ask lots of questions and don't try to run before you can walk, there are a lot of projects that I wouldn't attempt even now but hope to one day as my skills and knowledge increases.

Don't feel too bad. I started with trueSpace 2 many years ago and didn't really learn much until tS6 came around. I still enjoyed the product all those years of course but didn't really get down to learning until trueSpace 6.
In principle I knew how all the tools worked but never really used them together until I set an ambitious goal that stretched my capabilities. That gave me enough of a toe hold that I know I can tackle some bigger things now. Even still, I think I've got tons of growing space to work into.
Madmouse, you rock sir! I loved watching your last one develop and this one looks to be quite interesting so far. Can hardly wait until you get to the texturing stage as that was my favorite of the favorite parts to watch on the last one :) |

Can hardly wait until you get to the texturing stage as that was my favorite of the favorite parts to watch on the last one Thanks Proff, but I'm sorry to disappoint you, I'm planning to have minimum textures on this one and mainly use shaders only. But if it comes out as good as I see it in my minds eye it will still be worth keeping an eye on ;) |

Awww! Guess I'll just have to settle for the favorite parts instead of my favorite of favorite parts. :D
That's ok though. I'm sure you'll make it worth our while to follow! |

So has the warehouse management finally decided to upgrade that beat up old yellow warehouse mech of yours? I'm lookng forward to seeing this one develop as I almost always find myself learning something from your projects.
You realise that once you've completed this mech your fans will be clamouring for an "old mech versus new mech" image? With Mace Windu in the drivers seat!!!! |

wow - that's a lot of polygons! the smoothness of the leg and the rendering are wonderful! Yep... I'm going to have to watch the polycount, its my Achilles heal when it come to modeling, I always tend to over do the smoothness but that's because I hate to see jaggies in a render.
Thank you BTW :D |

:O Here we go again!
I gotta say, following your warehouse mech was one of the best, if not the best, work in progress thread experiences I've ever had! That'll be a hard one to top, but I don't doubt for a second that you'll be doing just that!
Can't wait! |

I actually started with the foot. It was a cylinder that I bent into shape using TS's taper and bend object tools, then I cut out the 'hoof' gap at the front using point edit tools and added the bottom of the foot. The top of the foot was modelled in TS by using extrusion, bevel & rescaling tools. The ankle joint was modeled as a separate object. Then I separated the top of the foot, copied it and flipped it round to be the start of the leg. The top face of this was separated again and then exported into Silo and the leg was modeled there using the face that I had cut away from the bottom of the leg as a starting point so that it would match the rest of the leg. Although I used silo for the leg I did nothing that couldn't be done in TS I just find it easier to model in Silo than TS. Once I had the finished shape modeled in Silo I converted it back to TS for subdivision and rendering. And so the process continues.
I hope that answers your question rjeff. I've posted the base model of the leg for you to play around with if you want. I thought you might like this :D

Will be really interesting to see if you'll stick to your "shiny" approach
or if the "grime" part of you takes over ;) |

Well here's the next stage of the leg completed. I'm rather pleased with the mix of organic and mechanical looking sections of this project so far (just hope I can keep the balance to the end).
Onto the next section of the leg then.......
Comments and crits please guys. More soon.
This image is also posted in the trueplace WIP gallery BTW.

Mad, my only point is that is the foot?? if not.. everithing is ok.. If the answer is yes??.. you dont see to small??
I think in relation of the leg the foot is too small.. with that foot i dont think the mech be very stable walking.. ;) |
