Awesome texturing ! Really like what you did with the flesh around the horn-area.:D

Something I didn't notice in the greyscale render...shouldn't the part where the corner-teeth enter the ..gum(?).. be raised slightly?

It looks abit straight in the "teeth joins the flesh" area?

Just my opinion, and in the final fullbody render it's probably not visible anyway...:o

I agree with ED about letting us in on how you UV'd the horns. They turned out much better then originally described. Get those eyes glowing again.

Really nice work Steve!

Looks like the horns where UVmapped by faces?

Lower part cylindrical UV for the big symbol

and the bendy part planar mapping, one for each outside of the horns?

(can't figgure out what the small UV patches are....is it part of the pointy part? Or the downscaled insides of the horns..?)

A simpler way would be to make the horn as a cone-like shape, one cylindrical map and then bend the horn.... though that would have caused distortions/stretching/crunching of the texture. So, simpler than Madmouse method but wouldn't give as good result as he got ! :D

(That's why he's the master and I'm just lazy ;) )

Steve, I'm running out of words to describe your work. I'm going to have to start making some up.

AweCoolsomeFanBrilliant! :D

Really though, I'm in awe of your texturing skills. Can't wait to see him all together. :)

That it just proffessional work! :jumpy: I envy you.....lol

Question? You mentioned you were DRAWING your textures, did you use an electronic drawing pad? As well as photoshop? Did you use a reference for your realistic looking human ead texture? You look like you know what your doing so I need some answers if you don't mind lol

Sorry W!Z but I tried your idea for the horns, but either my texture skills failed me or it was just one of those ideas that sounds good on paper but fails in practice. When I added the veins the horns just looked messy and I had to have a re-think.

Woah! No apology required mate! I'm flattered enough that you even considered it!

I must say than when I suggested it I had no real idea of how one would go about doing what I had suggested so I was curious as to how you would attempt it. The only idea I came up with was to sweep out a branching tree-like structure of veins which sounded very tedious.

What you have come up with as an alternative is stunning, Steve. Totally impressive and quite unique - at least I've not seen anything quite like this before. Thanks very much for sharing your creative process with us - it's nothing less than inspirational!

BEAUTIFUL work MadMouse.
Thanx for sharing images, maps, etc. Very helpful (and inspirational to boot).

Am bleery-eyed so didn't read all the posts. My only suggestion is to lengthen the torso if possible, for size balance.

Had to stop and say... Beautiful work :)

Once again, thank you all for the kind words and encouragement.

What app/method did you use to lay out the UVs for the horns?.... I agree with ED about letting us in on how you UV'd the horns.

I use a combination of UV mapper Pro & Ultimate unwrap 3D. They both have very useful tools for different kinds of mapping jobs.

Very impressive Lars, your almost 100% correct. The larger sections on the map were done using Ultimate unwrap 3D's 'unfold faces' tool which I find very useful and use a lot. It allows you to select a polygon then select which edge to unfold the neighbouring polygon onto (hard to explain but very easy to use:) ) These sections were originally mapped larger than the rest of the horn because this was where I intended W!ZARD's veins to be so I needed the extra pixels to add the detail. The sides of the horns are indeed planar mapped and are both horns at once, which allowed me to make the same pattern on both horns at once without have to reproduce it and also gave me more room in the map. The smaller sections are the inside and outside edges of the horns. I knew that I wouldn't have textures on these sections so I could get away with making them quite small so that they only picked up the main colour of the metal.

Question? You mentioned you were DRAWING your textures, did you use an electronic drawing pad? As well as photoshop? Did you use a reference for your realistic looking human ead texture?

Yes, I have an old Wacom A4 oversize 1212UD (I think that's its reference No.) which believe it or not I was given in return for airbrushing a cloud picture for my place of work:confused: (no really) you can see it HERE (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=840&page=3&highlight=show+room) if you want (scroll down the thread a bit).

I use Paint Shop Pro 7 as my main texturing tool, its getting on a bit now but it does what i need. I also use some other paint software as and when I need to :- Artrage, PSP10, Photoshop, GIMP & Inkscape.

I didn't use a reference picture for the head texture. The whole head was covered using a tilling skin texture and then lightened and darkened it to add the form of the face. Then I added each different part of the face i.e. lips, beard, eyebrows on separate layers. The sore looking skin was the only photos used in the making of the texture, they are actually of pressure sores (YUK!) that I found on the net and altered to fit round the horn holes.

I hope this answers your questions, If not feel free to give me another shout.

Thanks again to everyone who commented.

Back with the mech arm soon (as long as I don't get too distracted by TS7.5, assuming it ever gets released!;) :D )

Wow! Thanks for the detailed reply! It's very instructive and inspirational. :D

BTW, I've been debating buying UU3D on and off for a few months now...so I think you may have just made Brad Bolthouse $50 more, LOL. <Clicks "Buy Now"....> ;)

Say Madmouse, didn't I hear that you were working on a texturing tutorial? Or was that a Caligari video course.... :D
