Yes you are right the foot does look small but when you see where I'm going with this project it will makes more sense and hopefully look to scale. Thanks for the suggestion though Augusto.

A devil mech....is my guess, then the hoof would be perfect. :)
Grime vs Shiny... if you stick to shiny you'll be able to amp up the polycount
without reaching the mem-limit too fast.
You just have to be firm with your forum-grime-fans, me included ;) |

I'm thinking something four legged. I really like how it looks muscular, and the 'fur' really adds to the more organic feel of it. It should be on a soccer team with legs like that! |

It's probably just my environment and the fact that it's dinner time, but I still say it's crab legs!
Looking good - think I'll go eat! |

LOL With all this imagination I expect to see an abundance of mechs from you lot soon :D Sooooo many ideas but only one is close to being correct. But I'm not telling which one. (Oooooo aint I a tease ;) )
In the mean time you'll have to be satisfied with another update. Finished the leg up to the thigh, but I'm struggling with the hip joint. I did some test renders with two legs together and they looked a bit weedy so I've 'bulked' them up a little since the last post.
Comments, crits and guesses are still welcome guys.

It's looking great, with a real 'demon' type physiology...
Wonder if your problem with the hip joint might, in part, be due to the symmetry? Your leg looks very symmetrical at the moment (not necessarily a bad thing), but most hip joints are obviously rather one-sided (think of a human hip ball-and-socket joint). Don't know if going more in that direction might make the joint easier. Mind you, you hinted that things might be changing somewhat from the midpoint so don't know how much use 'standard' anatomy might be.... :D
As an alternate thought, if you're not already familiar with Games Workshop, you might want to have a look at their website, specifically the Warhammer 40,000 section to look at Imperial Guard 'Sentinels' and Eldar walkers - two types of 'mech'. The Eldar ones in particular have a quite 'organic' look that isn't totally dissimilar to the direction you've gone. Will see if I can find a specific link...
Looking forward to seeing this continue - I found your other mech example a week or so after signing up on the forum trawling through older threads and read it from start to finish... so inspiring! |

The thigh could be a bit beefier (depth). The fins make it look like normal proportion from a side view, but it still looks wrong due to the curvature of the thigh, and the fins don't add real volume. For the hip joints you probably have go out of symmetry to make them work. |

Looks really cool so far! Are you subdividing that in Silo or TS? The subdivision itself looks immaculate. Also, where would I be able to find Silo, I'd like to look into it. Thanks, and keep it up, mate! |

wow looking good! another mech in progress from the master.. if you want ideas for joints, go to any toy store and look at the action figures (robots, etc). you can also google, transfomers, mech warriors, FASA, Gundam, etc for pictures for more ideas |

That's a good eye you have there Nez... it was one of the Eldar walkers that was my original inspiration. I have a folder full of reference piccys grabbed from the net.

Hmmm... yep I think you could be right. Good Idea with the action figures to, I'll have to dig out my old action men from the loft:D
Are you subdividing that in Silo or TS? The subdivision itself looks immaculate. Also, where would I be able to find Silo the final subdivision is being done in TS. GraySho has given you the link so I'll do the sales pitch.... Trust me... Silo will be the best $109/£50 you will ever spend in the search of better modeling. And if you buy it now you get a free upgrade to V2.0 when its released. I've been playing with the Beta version of V2.0 over the last couple of days and man-oh-man has it got some good tools. It plays quite nicely with TS to. My modelling has come on leaps and bounds since I invested in a copy.
I know were not supposed to promote other software here but as Silo is modeling only and is used in conjunction with TS I'm sure I can be forgiven.
Thanks for all the other kind comments guys. More soon.

Of course I would never deign to question the master....but.... those fins? I love them they look great but the fins on the bottom leg section and top leg section look like they are 'growing' from the leg bitshowever thje fins on the central leg section look a little like they've been added as an after thought. Putting it another way, they appear more 'engineered' whereas the upper and lower sectyion fins look more organic. Just a thought... |

Really.... Hummmm... maybe the cause of this is down to the fact that you can see the open end of the fins on the middle section and not the other two. They are open, as this grab from Silo shows, but cant be seen from a front view. I could join up the front of the fins but I think this would look odd to. Any ideas????
Thanks Parva, more coming soon, but I had to take a little break to save my sanity ;)

Er... apart from the idea that I should stop questioning the great masters? :D
Looking at it from this different angle changes things a little. The lowest fins wrap around the ankle and the top fins sort of grow out from the bulbous thigh - we can see here that all three leg components have quite different fin structures. I think that it's the contour line that looks slightly muscular, setting up a sharper angle between the leg and the fin that gives it the 'bolted on' look I mentioned in the middle section.
Of course we can see the hinge joints between the leg components are purely mechanical and therefore 'bolted on' so I don't think it matters in the slightest! ;) . At the end of the day it always comes down to the Artists discretion and I have enormous faith in your artistic vision. I really only mentioned it as a passing thought and this alternative view renders my thought pretty meaningless really. And if you look at my dodgy spelling in that post you'll see that (a) it was very late and (b) I was typing too fast!:o

Well I don't know about being a master but I do know you should never stop questioning my work. As I said at the start of this thread, it was the input that came from the forum that made the last mech a success, and your input was greater than most, so keep it coming mate :D
Thanks Stephen |

RIGHT!!! before we get started...
NOBODY MENTION BLOODY POLYGON COUNTS!!!!:D
please save that for the relevant thread.;)
OK, I feel better now;)
Quite a big update this time as all the new sections needed to line up, so I waited until I'd reached a nearly finished stage until I posted.
Things you need to know...
1)... I cant take credit for the torso. It was a freebee I found on the net and it met my purposes almost exactly (never one to look a gift horse in the mouth, in it went)
2)... The stump at the base of his spine is a mounting for a yet to be modelled tail.
3)... I know he looks like he's about to fall backward but this is just how he is modelled. The joints of the legs all work and the final pose will be much different from that seen here, hence the arched back.
One thing I would ask is concerning the arms. I'm considering going down two routes.
Either:-
a)... organic arms that fit to the existing torso.
b)... Robotic/mech arms which would join to the shoulder maybe with the torsos skin stretched and pinned where the two meet
what do you think??? mech arms would be easier to adjust and pose but organic arms might look better??? any ideas are welcome.
As always comments, crits & ideas are most welcome.
More to come soon
Steve
BTW the polycount currently stands at 129154 SHHHHHHHHH! don't tell Roman:D |
