if you start a wip I'll tell ya there, this is Steve's
Then a WIP there shall be (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?p=26144#post26144)!
Ah, I see your point about the thighs. I definitely see where the thicker ones would be restrictive to movement, and it does look much more natural when you see them without the straps on the torso. Also I understand about the more mechanicalness of the mech. Which brings me to another headache with pictures (an idea)! (I've been suggesting alot, I hope it's not overbearing XD) In an earlier post of the rear view, you revealed that the back of the thigh is open, right? How about if you put a hydraulics cylinder coming out of the back (parallel to the leg). That would offer some sort of explaination as to how the leg moves, and it would also beef up the leg a little more. But not as much as in my mock up.
Again, only offering ideas as they come to me, I still love it the way it is! |

Outstanding Model Steve! Cheers John :D
@ Methusela... funny enough Chris, the open sections at the back of the shins were originally designed to have exactly what your suggesting (rams) but early on in the design I decided not to go along that route. I didn't want to get bogged down with making the mech functional as I did with my warehouse mech, but more stylised. after all we're talking about a satan mech (i-satan:D still makes me chuckle) so a little bit of magic and mythology can be allow in the functionality of the thing, surely?
I've been suggesting a lot, I hope it's not overbearing of course not, never, no, not at all :D
Again, only offering ideas as they come to me and that's just what I'm after, keep 'em coming. I sometimes get the feeling that some people are reluctant to criticise my work because I have the reputation of being quite good at this lark and, in their minds, they feel that have no business critting me. But nothing could be further from the truth... someone who brought TS yesterday and not even installed it yet, can spot something I've missed or have the moment of inspiration that could make a good project a great project.
(did I manage to say that without sounding too much of an egomaniac???? I do hope so:o )
So basically... come one, come all to the ugly bug ball.:D

I have nothing to critique about. For me coming up with a concept of something in my mind takes longer than modeling it.
I'll post later in my demon thread on some lame mech stuff I came up with. Pretty sad...heh
Mech concept is harder than I thought. |

Just a quick update on the fitting of the left mech arm. I've decided to go with W!ZARD's idea of having one mech arm and one organic (Cheers Stephen;) )
I'm getting frustrated with not having much time to work on this project recently, but hopefully that should change over the weekend and next week so expect some better progress in the next post.

Aw, Madmouse! You're stepping into my turf with organic modelling ! And you're doing it extremely well !
Just you wait until my computer is back up and running, then I'll make a Warehouse mech! ;) |

Now that's looking good!
Excellent MadMouse!
And you're doing it extremely well! Thanks guys. I can't take full credit on the arm. It was a poser arm that was posed & reshaped in poser then carted over to silo and had its polygons extensively reworked into a cleaner mesh and finally stitched (hence the Dr. joke) onto the body. Phew!!! with hind sight, it would probably have been easier to just model the damn thing from scratch:D
.....then I'll make a Warehouse mech! Now that would be cool!!!!!:D
Now for the mech arm... but heh, wait a minute, I just realised that there is less to do than has already been done!!!!
WOOOHOOO!!!! light at the end of the tunnel!!!!

MadMouse using a Poser arm... I feel like a little kid who's just been told Santa isn't real.Sorry to shatter your illusions but I quite often 'borrow' parts of poser models when I'm feeling lazy.
Ancient warrior (the one with the beard)
warehouse mech/minimech
phew! that's a hot one!! (curry tin man)
After the fight (mace windu)
To name but a few.
Although in my defense I have never used a whole poser model (other than the driver of the warehouse mech) in my work. To me, poser is a tool and not a whole package, that's not to say some that some great work cant be accomplished in poser but its a lot easier to produce sh*t.
I did take all morning to remodel the arm in question so its far from being a poser arm really, just a starting point.
Don't worry Santa still exits but sometimes its easier to go to toys R us than get the elf's to make the presents:D

I realise that must give the little guys a much needed break, but at the same time you run the risk of being accused of indulging in elf pity. ;) |

Glad to hear that MM. I often do that as well. There is nothing wrong with it either and it makes perfect time management sense.
I would compare it to buying a car of the showroom floor and modifying it to make your own street rod.
No one ever accused hotrodders of not being true hobbyists whose goal of individually stylizing cars was their goal. :) |

Hey, no problemo! To quoite Douglas Adams' doors 'pleased to be of service'. Speaking of Douglas Adams, your mech is starting to look like something that comes from Sirius Cybernetics Corporation.
Interestingly, I have something of a history with Satan - no less than 3 different church leaders have accused me of being the Son of Satan and once, as I was innocently weandering across a downtown car park I was approached by a young lady I'd never seen before who asked me if I was a Devil Worshipper.
I nearly replied by saying, 'give me your first-born child and I'll show you, Mwa ah ah'. Fortunately my better nature prevaled and and instead I just asked he if I looked like a Devil Worshipper (unlikely as I was simply returning some Library books at the time).
Your mech is coming along very nicely Steve - and as there is no point in reinventing the wheel, using existing Poser (or in my case, Makehuman) components is just sensible IMHO.
I really like the way the mechanical arm mount curves around this guys chest. He already looks so imposing that he's bound to damn scary when he's all textured and set in a suitably demonic scene. Keep 'em coming my friend.

Seriously! I can't wait to see his face! I think the face should also be half organic, half robot. Think half-melted face of The Terminator robots!
And W!zard, there's really no need to be embarrassed about Satan being your dad. My own father has been the official acting Santa Claus for almost forty years, and that has lead to him being away from home a whole night each year, which is hard on my mom and the rest of us. However, I can assure you with confidence; once you accept his choices, your relationship with him will grow and grow. Just be careful when it's bring your child to work day. :D |

Chuckle! It's more the other way around - I'm such a good guy he gets embarressed! My own father has been the official acting Santa Claus for almost forty years, Your Dad owes me a tricycle!!! ;) |

You SOOO got that right! Actually Christchurch is remarkably tolerant and supportive of Wizards. Google 'Christchurch Wizard' and you'll see what I mean. The Wizard of Christchurch, (AKA the Wizard of New Zealand (http://www.wizard.gen.nz/)and the Wizard of Aotearoa) was employed by the Christchurch City Council as the cities official Wizard. BTW Christchurch City Council also employs a town cryer! This Wizard, and many others are generally looked upon rather benevelently by the general populace.
Believe it or not the local provincial cricket team is called the Canterbury Wizards! (Americans might not grasp the full significance of that last sentence but our British, Australian and Indian readers who understand the significance of cricket will understand :D. Americans will get the idea if they think 'baseball' instead of 'cricket'. ).
Sadly though, other parts of the country are not so accepting of Wizards - and misunderstandings about the nature of Wizarding have been know to lead to some.... interesting remarks from under-informed folk!
Ooops, I'm perilously close to hijacking Madmouses thread here :o :o . Still his fans need something to talk about while we await the next installment. |

Cyborg Satan is coming along rather nicely.. is that right arm going to get any metal bits or other decoration, it looks rather nekkid.. a thick bracer on the wrist would make a nice touch.

Oh my goodness, I never knew you were an actual W!zard! That's pretty awesome, if I do say so myself!
But we can't just stand around talking like this. W!zard's father was in a fairly serious accident. He lost both of his legs and one of his arms (and hopefully some of his face. :D). The entire forum stands with held breath as Mad Mouse attempts a never before tested biomechanical fusion. The fate of iSatan (and the iSatan household) rests in his paws. |

Sorry Brian I'm not sure I follow this. I've been 'into it' for 30+ years and have no regrets thus far. And for what it's worth I suspect that life in general is pretty creepy when you think about it. It's all relative to your particular perspective of course. ;)

Hm, Wizard is a completely harmless type of occupation as far as I understand, and it sounds fun, would love to see your businesscard! :)
( only problem as you mentioned is that some people might mistake it for something satanic)
I'd worry more if you'd been a Necromancer ;)

And I'll join your cry, "Madmouse, where are you !?" Watching...always watching!! Struggling with the mech arm at the moment,
but I made a breakthrough today so I should have something to post soon. |

Well here's that long awaited update.....I hope it was worth the wait?
I cant tell you how many different designs I tried before settling on the one below. In the finished render the pipes should all be woven steel and the 'muscles' will hopefully resemble bundles of steel cables, lots of chrome and shiny red to (Ooooh I'm looking forward to texturing this sucker!!!)
As always please feel free to comment and crit.
Hmmmm now how will I fit the head on???? ;) |
