Re-working current Speed Modeling entry, Kiwi Shoe Polishing Kit. Didn't want anyone to complain so put it here. :D
Will add a newspaper to the table and a shoe later. |

This is a nice work James, but I think the black background hurts it. A light blue, gray, white or gradient background would be much less harsh and I think be a large improvement.
I think the use of a black background hurts a lot of your other works too. It tends to clash with the bright daylight style lighting you are using and doesn't show off your models to the best advantage.
Of course modeled backgrounds are usually best though since it gives your metal objects something to reflect and if you do GI it gives the light something to bounce off of. :) Of course not every project needs that level of detail. It all depends on your purpose and audience.

I like this one as well, and I agree with j_edwards about the black background. You might want to try something lighter and see how it turns out.
Coming along nicely, though! |

Thanks for the advice on the lights. The scenes always appear better in Bryce, not sure if the lights are better or what. tS lights almost give me poor performance, at least in tS66.
Unrendered scene:
Added a candle jar - it's glass but not rendered.
Crumpled up the newspaper a bit.
The whole scene will go on a table in a room, so far from finished. |

Looks good James but the edges of the brushes look a little sharp, can i suggest a little bevel, I think that would do the job nicely.

The newspaper really added to the image. In regards to realism, you might want to adjust the grain pattern on the brushes so they are each a bit different..looking good so far! |

not bad at all. I would put it into an actual room and don't forget the moulding between the floor and wall. ;) |

Working on a room. Had a spot of trouble when the render starting acting up so I quit for the night. It would render half the image in the upper right hand corner of the screen. I tried using different camera views, no joy.
Will try later today. |

I'm not sure what it is, but the bottom of the tin there looks like it's fading into the background... is there a highlight or something? |

Not sure unless the bottom tin which is a mirrored surface is causing some problems. It's two pieces, the top textured tin and a bottom chrome material tin. You can see the two pieces on the left. I can push the tin up further in the can so it doesn't peek through or just leave out the bottom tin. |

It's probably the bottom tin then. Once you put it on a surface, then the shine will probably be reduced enough to look more natural. Basically, what I am seeing is a mini sunflare due to the bright white surface below. |

First attempt at a polishing cloth for the kiwi image. Used the British Flag symbol because it has clean lines and can show curves. Will make a fuzzy cloth texture later. |

I am not the best artist...but I am a thinker...this may not be a possiblity but to me the brush bristles really dont't look right. They seem very rugged and it looks more like wood. Now you may know this and what you have is just a texture to "fill in". If this is the case then just tell me to shut up!! |

heh heh, I would never tell you to shut up. :)
They are texture, simply because it was a quickie fix for the brush speed modeling contest. I can make hair/fur/brushes in another program, but trying to keep this all trueSpace. I'll have to figure out how to do the brushes without adding a zillion more polygons to the scene. :(
Good point though, I'll add it to my list of things to do. I want it to look as realistic as possible. |

You could make the bristle more realistic without modeling them by fading the ends using an alpha map. Just an Idea. |
