This airplane has become one of my favourite jets, and I've modeled it for a short movie project. Thus the details are fairly low (5870 faces) to keep rendertimes managable. I'll try to cover the missing stuff with a good texture.
The uv-mapping is mostly done, so not long until I start texturing.

Looking good GraySho, you've got a nice clean mesh, was it modelled in Silo? |

I don't want to knock your work Graysho but I had to laugh when I saw your plane. The body looks a little like your tablet airbrush upside down! Was the Tablet Airbrush the Warthog Model?:D
Great modeling by the way! I too love this plane....and the F16 ! |

Yes, it's modeled in Silo 1.42, and mapped in Silo 2 beta. The mapping tools are not fully implemented, but the unwrapping works pretty well. It would be much more time consuming to map it in tS with just planar and cylindrical mapping methods, especially the curved geometry around the engines. |

I would not dare to enter a silo model for a tS speedmodeling contest, that would be un....fair? ;) Just have a closer look at the geometry and topology of the two objects .... mismatch :D |

I don't know anything about Silo but Nice "Wart-Hog" tank-killer. http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/images/icons/icon14.gif
Some really complex geometry going on around the wing fillets. I'm impressed.
Be sure to give us a sample of the animation.

The base mesh is pretty simple. Here's a shot of the mesh without sds. It might give you an idea how that "chamfer" was done. tS should give you the same result.

Finally I have the uv-map done. I decided to split the map for more detail. The first texture I started was too pixelated although it was 2048x2048. Now I'm gonna make two texture maps with 2048x2048 each.

What did you use to make the texture maps? |

Firts I unwarpped it with Silo 2 beta, but the beta uv-tools are not fully developed yet. The second uv layout which I posted was done in blender (open source). The uv tools in blender are really excellent, and the unwrapping works like a charm. |

I have had Blender on my system for a while now but I get so lost with it's interface and it seems to ignore scale and hierarchal information in imported .cob files that I close it down within the first 5 min. It looks like it does a pretty good job of unwrapping though, maybe I'll give it another go.
This is looking good! |

a really nice A10.
I just spotted some sharp edges in front of the cockpit (btw. hadn't know that cockpit had something to do with cock's :D) and wing and some other regions.
Maybe a short stroke with the smooth brush in silo2 could solve it :) |

Not that I know very much about aeroplanes or the A-10 but I must agree with Parva about the sharp edges at the front of the cockpit. Other than that it looks great.

True, as far as scale and proportion goes..., but I highly recomend searching for a tutorial done by "Greybeard" on the unwrapping aspects. The blender unwrappin easily rivals high end apps.
P.S. you can paint on your model too.:) |

I used to pass A-10s on the way to the C-130s on the flightline at Sembach Air Base in Germany.
Still have a shell from the cannon of one somewhere.
nice model. |

This and the F-16 were my favourite planes in the world when I was littler. I used to go to air shows to see the Thunderbirds, and I even got to sit in the cockpit of an A-10! Imagine how happy a six year old me would be with that!
The model looks excellent, and the geometry's immaculate. The textures certainly seem to be making their way steadily forward, and they look great so far. Looking forward to more! |

Must have been great! I'be glad to have a chance to take some reference photos for texturing, but there's little chance to see one here in Europe. I've been out of town for almost two weeks, hopefully I'll be able to continue with the texture ASAP.
Cheers |

I always had a soft-spot for the A-10, there's just something special about it. I remember, about 20 years ago 1 flew very low over my school. That was 1 time I was glad I was late - if I'd been on time I would have been inside & missed it, instead of walking across the playground as it went over. :) |

A-10s have one of the most distinctive sounds when it comes to aircraft engine sounds. You could always tell it was an A-10 by the sound before you even saw it. |

Looking foward to see it textured, hope you get back soon ! :D
A10 is one of my favourites too, and I recall flying it in one of my old flight-sims... must be a creepy job to fly so low with such a heavy plane !? (hrm, maybe not for a real pilot, but I usually ended up "attacking" the tanks by hitting them with the plane ;) ) |

It's been a while since I've opened tS, today I finished the first part of the texture. The blank/white parts will be next.

The troublesome crease was just a question of dragging 6 vertices a bit further down the z axis ;) |
