I figured that since I made a Tutorial on how to map a leaf, I might as well use the object.

I think something is not quite right, but I'm not sure what...

A couple things to consider:
The tree needs roots, or at least a bit of 'swelling' at the base. The way it shoots straight into the ground is a little awkward.
Try turning on collision detection when placing the leaves onto the ground plane- some look like they are floating.
Another way is to run a physical simulation and let them fall and see if the physics engine places them on the ground surface.
One thing leaves have is a little bit of translucency- they transmit a bit of light through themselves because they are so thin.

hmmmm.. yes I turned on collision for the everything. as with most "planted" trees, this one shows no roots on the ground because the roots would be too deep. It's not an oak, so much as it's an ash basically. I think you have it with the translucency of the leaves, I will work on that and see what I can come up with... maybe try to swell the ground up more toward the tree...

How about this? The bottom part will be blacked out with the caption added in, so I'm not too concerned that you can see all that shadow there.

OK... I got frustrated trying to get leaves to sit right on un-level ground, so I climbed into the scene, cut down some trees and built a deck.

Now that I think if it, I could probably just have hand-pushed the leaves to the right places while I was in there...

like the overall look, the leaves seem a bit dark to me. If it is fall I would think they would "pop" a bit more. Just my observation.

The problem I see is none of your leaves touch other leaves. I would think overlapping them would add more realism. Also get some color into your lights.

OK latest installment.

The deck is supposed to be just built. If it were older, then I would have to add grass to the bare lawn. I did not give any variation to the leaves because I wanted to highlight the "different" one. :D

Much better! I'd recommend using the Simbiont shaders for the wood on the deck though. You can get those for free at http://www.darksim.com/html/body_download_simbiont2.html

Looks great so far!

The leaves look much better now but FWIW I still think the decking needs a little attention to really finish it scene off.

I'm not very good with symbiont, but I have shader magic...
What do you think of this one?

Naturally I'm going to end up putting the caption below as in the example on the previous page...

Hay kena!

I've been watching this one but didn't have any suggestions that weren't already mentioned. I like the final placement of the leaves, they finally have a natural random look.

Even though salt treated lumber has a greenish color I think by changing the deck color to brown really emphasizes your point. It really makes the green leaf stand out. It's different from everything else in the image!

Nice work!

Good work! A great visual gag and the colouration of this latest image really makes it 'pop' and therefore sells the image well.

You could add more detailing of course - a slight bevel on the edges of the deck timbers. Slight variation in height or some subtle warping of some of the deck timbers - even a brand new deck has those little imperfections. Also some weathering to the decking texture could help too.

Of course the image does not really need that degree of refinement - it works really well as it is IMHO.
