I'm not sure where I should have posted this - here or in the tS 6.6 forum - but here I am anyway!

Rather than laboriously re-inventing the wheel I'm hoping someone can point me to an appropriate tutorial or supply some relevent pointers for my current project.

I have modelled a cannon and cannons are no fun unless you can fire them! My challenge is to create a reasonably convincing cannon blast, muzzle flash, smoke and so on for a static image. As there will be several cannons firing I've been trying to make an animation using trueParticles in Ts6.6 which I could use at seveal different points so that as the smoke clears from one cannon, the next one has recently fired and the third is actually firing.

Don't laugh but this what I've come up with so far:-

As you can see, I need help!

Are you using trueParticles or PPfx? I found PPfx works much better for smoke effects. I will see if I can upload my presets. You can see the result in my FX tests WIP thread (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=2142) It should be good point to start from.

I don't have PPFX

But you can have - it's one of the Primitive Itch plugins that are now free.

Thanks Kena and WWOTW. I'll get a copy of PPFX and try it out. The reason I've not already done so is that PPFX is a post-render solution that uses sprite type particles which do not cast shadows. I was hoping to use trueParticles which do cast shadows.

Currently I'm working on a different approach altogether but I'm still interested to know if it's doable with trueParticles.

Here's the link to my emitter presets (ppfx):http://www.spacerat.at/truespace/presets1_ppfx.zip

The files go into the ppfx installation folder. Create a new emitter, and load the presets. Maybe you can adapt these settings and use them for trueParticles. The most important thing would be the material of the particles. Instead of using solid colors, use transparency and alpha maps. The png and tga files in the zip should work quite well.

Is it bad that I really liked that first image? I think its style is awesome. XD

Another thing you could look at is Particle Illusion, they have a demo that watermarks rendered output, but you can get past that if you take a screenshot in the actual workspace, then set everything to white, and take another screenshot, use that as the alpha map, and then composite in TS itself or in Gimp or Photoshop.
