These are two weapons for the mech I'm working on. The actual conception of what mech should be and shouldn't is not that easy as I have found.
The one on the left is a bolt on claw. The one on the right is a piercing type, retractable punch.
The second image just shows the back.
I need to make up some concept art before I do this again. Both of these were done on the fly and it shows. heh |

Thanks for the kind comments. I have to clean up the three-sider polygons before I press on with it. Lot of work to go, this mech stuff is tough! :D |

I sense a Battle of the Mechs coming!
heh heh, maybe....
MM will most likely kick my buttocks. :D
Mine will be animated in a scene and its why I need nice clean meshes before I bone it.
I could send the mesh over to MM and let him fix it <evil grin> |

looking very interesting james, look forward to seeing more
Perhaps you could reconsider your stance after viewing this, or this.
Yeah, it started as Poser.
Hmm, quite nice, but all i see is a poser model, yes i can tell specially when its using the standard solid hair object, rendered with a nice instrument model and a nive lighting setup, lol unfortunatly i still do not reconsider, it fuels me even more lol
I've always taken the view that it's not how much you pay for a product so much as what you can do with it.
I have 3ds MAX... very 'spensive. costs about 3 times what truespace does. don't use it. just cannot get it to work well for me. So, I use Truespace.
Cannot model a live subject to save my life. Use Makehuman - DAZ - LWO whatever I can.
perhaps using a trial of the software would have been in order lol, waste of money, ive tryed it but I cant use it myself heh, thus I havent spent all that money on it heh. I cant model organics, but im learning, anyone can, though truespace isnt particularly good for it at the moment, Maya is, using software like Mkehuman and Poser would be regarded as lazy in the industry, i dont know many who would use it due to its unrealistic results etc |

You should really put in who the quotes are from. It makes it look like you are responding to what I wrote, which I didn't. :) |

Oh, I meant to ask as well, how is Hexagon? Also, how is it compared to the likes of Silo? The interface seems somewhat reminiscent of Zbrush (or at least the subdivision 3D preview reminds me of it. Still haven't figured out how to use that damned program. XD)
I wonder how the new modeling tools in 7.5 will measure up to the likes of Silo and Hexagon. It'd be cool if they rendered them obsolete. :D |

Silo is easier to learn imo. I don't use it much, not sure why.
Hexagon has a ton of nice tools, but a longer learning curve.
Once you get used to either one, modeling no longer becomes a chore, it is more of a creative pleasure.
With tS, I am constantly searching for tools and of course the crashes that seem to obliterate my work.
The strong suit in tS imo is the rendering and display for rendering.
Whatever suits your style is the best way to go. It's not a sin to have a chest of tools to help you do your work.
Besides, it always happens - you'll start doing something in another application and it will dawn on you that you could do that in tS or vice versa in another application. Which is a good thing.
The line modeling in Hexagon 2 is superb. it's really easy to draw a line anywhere on anything.
Let's say you want to make a shirt for a character. You can draw a line right on the model following the curves. Move the model away, start extruding, you have one panel done, copy it - flip it - two panels down. Now, trace the collars out - same thing. Now do the sleeves - easy and not cheesey.
Bing bang your done, group them together. One shirt finished.
Need to make a bracelet in hexagon? no problem...
Make a line circle (several types are supplied). Now use a sphere, size it down. use the utilities - click on the circle, instant necklace. A pearl necklace if you wish.
Lots of other examples too numerous to mention here and I probably shouldn't sense it's another product. :) |

You can start another thread about Hexagon2 and Silo if you want and we can comment there. It's not competing with TS 7 but compliments it. So we can talk about it but not in this thread. This is one is James's Demon thread and I don't want to change subjects. |

Ah, you're going to animate it. My life is easier then, since I only do stills and can get away with three and n-sided polys. :)
Getting curious about how the body will look...:jumpy:
Since you and Madmouse have choosen the opposite directions to start with, one from bottom one from head...maybe we could merge your mechs ;) |

You could make a detatched kneecap! Humans don't have attatched kneecaps, so perhaps you could just make a robocap (har!) and stick it over there, maybe add some hydraulic pumps to attatch it on there! |

Looking good but I'm not so sure about the feet. They say 'pixie boots' to me rather than daemon claws. Just a thought. |

That's cloven Pixie feet to you Mister. :D
Yeah, they need some more bulk, haven't decide. I may scrap the legs and go pure bot, not sure yet. |

Poser models and makehuman models tend to all look weird, in the way that I atleast can almost always tell that a poser model has been used in a scene, no professional would use the software for a major piece especially if it was main focus, its like using Bryce or Vue in some ways its cheating and although results are nice, you can always tell, maybe its just me but after spending much time on cgtalk you begin to see how you cant get away with useing such software unless its coupled with your own input
I know I am alittle late on the giving this input but I wanted to share the work of David Ho who mainly uses Poser, Bryce, and Photoshop. He is a professional artist producing all sorts of magazine and book cover work using these simple tools. It really speaks to the power of using artistic principles and having talent. I have also learned that if you do simple things like not use the default light settings in Bryce (the sun) but use good lighting principles and such you can create spectacular work that will not have a product signature and the viewer is more moved by the IMAGE and not the tools.

@e-graffiti; wow, that's some pretty impressive work - and it makes your point very effectively IMHO. Mr. Ho has some truly outstanding art on his site - thanks for the great link. |

Tail lo9oks like it's just stuck on there. You need it to be more part of the body or suit. see ifyou can give it a purpose too. ;) |

Tail was just stuck on...but it's not important now, tS just ate the file and all the backups, crashed the desktop.
Looks like I'll be starting over on the mech guards...
Out of six scene files saved, this was the only one that I could recover. And it doesn't look very salvageable -.- Oh yeah, tS66 crashed again before that and I had to re-install... |

Why on Earth did it do that?! Hmm. What file format did you export from Hexagon? If it was .obj, did you use the LUUV plugin? I know TS has some trouble working with .objs imported through any other means. :/
I'm sorry you lost so much, I hope you can find a way to get it back! |

Yeah, it was LUUV plug in. Beginning to wonder if it is corrupted. I'll re -install it later
Anyways...decided to start over on guards. Getting a concept on the hand, Did this really quick, lots of mistakes in it, but its just a prototype, not extruded from a body, e.g. |

Sucks to lose that much. Been there, done that... drive crash took out more than just my models a few years back. Unusual that backups would be destroyed too though. Maybe a virus scan is in order, just to be sure. Good luck with the recovery. |
