Hello!
As a warning, this thread will include disgusting images, so I advise many to leave (politely;)).
Now, I'm a big fan of the famous "SAW" movies, and I recently came up with the idea to recreate one of the posters in 3D.
Here's a link to the poster I will recreate:
http://www.impawards.com/2004/posters/saw_ver1.jpg
Don't be mad at me for posting that, please!:( I am looking at this in the most artistic manner I can! Honest!
So far, I've begun working on the hand model I will use. It's included in this post.
As a note, many of you may remember my (incomplete) "sword fight" project. In that project, I modeled a foot in the hopes of creating a full human. This failed, sadly, as I did it incorrectly. This time, I've learned from my mistakes and created this using the "subdivision modeling" technique. Check it out and tell me what you think! |

Ah that was such a good trilogy. Sick and disturbing, yet brilliant at the same time! Looking forward to this one! |

Harsh subject matter you've picked there. I think the textures will likely be the most difficult part in making it convincing. Best of luck!

Have you seen RichLevy's hand in MadMouse's iSatan thread? That'd be great reference for texturing this, I think. Yowch, I hope he gets better all the way! |

I learned to look at it, I was really freaked out by it for the first month it was on my arm. One of the things you had to do was clean it 3 or more times a day, I absolutely could not do that, luckily my dad had no problem cleaning it.
The picture I loaded to MadMouse's thread was taken just days before I was supposed to get it removed from my arm. It was originally scheduled to be removed a week later but I was getting infected and I was barely able to keep it from getting worse. That picture was enhanced in Photoshop, I was playing around with it and I happened to sharpen it a lot with the Unsharpe Filter which really enhanced the different colors in it...
Feel free to use as a reference also, I can supply a larger version if you need something bigger to work with.

Man that's rough Rich. You should try to make them pay worker's compensation since they won't let you return.
If you get your home improvement certification, maybe you can freelance doing projects for people and advertise your services in the phone book. Professionals out this way (DC area) usually get around $80/hr. Especially if you can do plumbing or are certified for electrical work.

Ya that is tough, Not sure what the labor laws are like in the States but legally in Canada an employer has to take you back, maybe there is a suporvisory role somewhere, Personally if it was me I think going on your own doing home reno's, hire a helper to help you out with the things you can't do anymore and such may work out better for you.

I wish it were that easy guys. I am on Workers Comp, but I am not too sure when that runs out, when the doctor releases me is technically the point of stoppage. As far as the company's obligation, after having given them 10 years service, they are only obligated to keep me up to 90 days after the accident, it's been 4 months :(
At stake is 20 years in the union, I am virtually unemployable right now so I will not be able to get a job thru the union... I am considering going back into business again, but it is not as simple as just saying that... I have a few weeks to think this thru... Time to hunker down and get serious again, I might even just go into another industry... wish life came with a manual.

Well there's the 3D graphics field:

You got 3 weeks to get your portfolio together, right? :D

So sorry about your situation...I hope it works out.
On a different note, I thought I might add something trivial, you like?;)

Hey John
You are on the right track, you just need to spend a little more time adding just a little more detail. Here is a picture of a hand I used to use, it is a relatively low rez model, but it SDS's up pretty nicely. Seeing that your hand needs to be the focus of your piece you should probably spend some more time to make it look as the best you can.

yeah, I've been tweaking it as I've been going along. I'm having a lot of difficulty with the nails though (particularly where the skin overlaps it.)
Any suggestions? |

Keep it simple, doing an extrude on the top face (1 single face on your model, 2 faces on my example), bring the extrude down (this creates the cavity for the nail, the end of skin, beginning of nail part) than another extrude to create the nail, this you pull up. You will have some cleanup you need to do around the front of the finger and nail (end of the fingernail) but that should get you where you want to be pretty quickly.
Show a picture when you think you have it. Use the picture of my hand as reference, or another one if you choose, but use one that has good topology that is easy to follow and just duplicate what the other artist did. It is a time honored tradition in the art world so do not be afraid to use it :D

Here's an update. I managed to create the nails, but I'm still having difficulty making the skin overlap them.
Along with this image, I've also attached the newer version of my model. See what you can make of it... |

Kook at the way I did your hand, index fingernail. I hope this helps to see what you need to do. The key is to do the 1st extrude and go down, yours you went up, that helps to give the skin the overlap look. There are some geometry errors with this mesh, I did not have the time to fix them.

There! I did it! (with RichLevy's inspirations, of course;))
I continued off of what I already had, and did a little point editing so the geometry outside the nails could go from on top to underneath.
Now I'm off to add wrinkles! |
