I'm just developing a coverilustration for one of my friends here.

He is writing an arabic fairytale with the title "The Wizard with the golden Hands".

Therefor I had to model a Hand. Btw my first one ;) .

Now it would be great if somebody here could give me some hints and critics how I can improof it.

The process of making was - starting with a boxmodel in TS up to the fingernails and some subdivs - then taking the whole thing to mudbox for aging the hand (the wizard is old - sorry w!zard not you :D ) - than taking it back to TS and one more SD.

After this the little scene and some renders.

The last image is the one which comes nearest to the wanted result.

For a first time hand model you've done really really well. Its very impressive. The one thing that jumps out at me is the tips of the fingers when the hand is seen palm up. They look very squared off, like the end of a pillow. They need to be more rounded. Other than that excellent work.

My tip !

Save time and take a hand from the software "Poser" or fom the free software "Makehuman"

These hands have a good mesh and can import to Truespace with the obj. exporters.

btw. youre hand model looks good

Very handsome hands! Madmouse and Vizu have already offered exactly the same comments that I would (being something of an expert on wizard hands!!:p )

Oh and for what it's worth I'm neither young nor old - I'm middle aged in this incarnation.

Please do show us the finished illustration if you can.

Out of interest I always thought that Arabic Wizards were called Wazirs or visiers.

Thanks to all for the comments :)

They look very squared off, like the end of a pillow. They need to be more rounded.

You are absolutly right. I change it lets see the result.

@ VIZU Sure this would be the easyest way, but this way I would never learn it ;)

@ W!ZARD Age is the most relativ thing :D Befor showing the finished result I think I'll have a lot of work.

The Wazir was an advisor to the old rulers (so far you might be right - or is wizard coming from wizend :D ) and a title for the speaker and executor of the Califes of Bagdad. i will ask Ibrahim for this.

Anyway is Wazir the arabic name of the Lady in the chess.

The hand models are great, but I'm not convinced by the gold so much. If you are going for a true gold, it should be a little more reflective and not so yellow imo. SIMBIONT TS has a really good gold shader.

Hey Chester,

where can I get this shader?

BTW here is an other render which I made for testing purpose in V-Ray.

Both materials are Fresnel only the settings for reflectans and transparency are different. While the render with LW is coming close to the wanted result is the V-ray lightyears away. Ithink for this V-Ray I'm too stupid :(

Here is a little update on the handmodel.

I tried to make the fingertips a little rounder. Further comments are most welcome:)

For the V-RAy render, there is too much Diffuse lighting in the gold. Note that metals are almost entirely reflection, they have little to no diffuse aspect. Their color appears as they color the reflections themselves, rather than have a surface that shows up with that color. A tiny bit of diffuse (or even ambient so it is constant) is fine, but it should be very small :)

That means to work the shader will need something to reflect, and the black background is not a good item there. In reality, a piece of metal in a black vaccum with a flashlight shining on it would look very boring and not like metal as it would have nothing to reflect to show off its metal properties (or even to see it was there).

So I would add an environment for it to reflect. HDRI would do the trick (and save you the time of building an environment in 3D, which would also work). Skypheres or cubes would also be an option.

HTH!

I believe the word 'wizard' (and Wazir) derives from the word 'wise' which I suspect is related to the word 'Vision' - a 'wise' person is one who 'sees'. 'Visier' may come from the same root word too.

I don't know if this is correct or not - I'm no etymologist - or entomologist, I always get those two terms mixed up, one studies word and the other studies bugs.

The rounder fingertips look better. The top of the hand looks a little flat to me, across the line of the knuckles - I would expect to see a slightly more pronounced curve there.

I tried to make the fingertips a little rounder. Further comments are most welcome They do look better, although its a little hard to be certain from the angle of this render but I think the fingers still look a little to square.

One more update of the hand.

The Fingertips are again a little rounder - the knuckles are increased and the Top of the hand is raised a bit.

Wizard comes from Middle English. It is a contraction of "Wise Art" Wizardry similarly comes from "Wize Artestry".
