Here's one I'm having fun with at the moment, an Audio Video Lounge.
The texture on the skydome is temporary and will be replaced tomorrow, I'll whip up a new one in Vue and re-do the lighting to brighten things up as well.
I love creating these structures (I have about 32 now) and I'm always open to constructive suggestions on concepts as well as methods employed.
Thanks...

Oh... about that image on the video monitor...
What you see there is a program I wrote running in WinXP, I created a 3d model a long time ago, converted screengrabs of it to alpha maps and it operates with transparency around it... the background I made for it to place as a Windows background is not actually part of the program, the program works with any background.
The program itself is also a WIP, however, so no release requests on that, although I can explain how to write your own if you wish to explore that.;)

Very nice Dude. You would love trueSpace7 for creating worlds like this. Most likely you could script what you wrote there in the tS7 Script Editor. Real time interaction too! |

That's pretty cool - I like the way it continues your 'crystaline' theme. Is it supposed to be floating on the lake? Could do with some reflections in the water if that's the case?
I find it mildly chucklesome (if that's a word) that with all your hi-tech environment, the speakers are still rectangular boxes with what looks like carpet/fabric fronts, like on a 70s/80s hifi...! ;) I think you could come up with something a bit jazzier on that front, you've clearly not got problems with creativity or futuristic looks...
Looking forward to seeing how it finishes up. |

Hi trueBlue, good talking to you again, and thanks!
Yeah.. I wish I had TS7.5, but unfortunately even with Roman's great upgrade offer to all us TS6.6 users I'm afraid it will be a few more months before I can budget the cash to upgrade at all (my wife has M.S. and related expenses keep me on an extremely tight budget). I will get it though, asap.
I see folks like yourself (TS Scripting Pros) as being on the very cutting edge of what will soon become a definite growth industry. For now we create truePlaces for Caligari but it won't be too long before TS Modeling expertise and TS Scripting expertise will be assets in very high demand by other Corporations as well who will be looking to have their own form of immersive collaborative spaces, especially when video capabilities become an integral part of the TS designs.
Your own script for manipulating objects in truePlay for instance has enormous potential that I can see right away. I see a way to use it already that could have a huge impact on the number of new and repeat users in truePlace environments right here at Caligari's servers. By the time I get to where you are now in scripting though you'll already be a "guru" of TS Scripting I have no doubt at all!!!
Maybe when I'm done with making mods to this particular WIP you may want to take it for a ride and see what bells and whistles you can inject into it! If so, I'll be happy to pass it to you and we can call it "ours" instead of mine! My idea in creating this space is for all of us to really enjoy it live online.
My main objective (and this is about as transparent as I can get) in making all of these "video-related" truePlace WIPs is to eventually produce something Roman himself will one day look at and say to himself... "Now this is good... it's time to put video capability for truePlaces on Caligari's top priority list today." If I ever accomplish that, I'll be a very happy man... because with video capabilities in our truePlace-related designs... the sky is the limit on what income we could each command directly by selling that capability in a photorealistic immersive environment AND our specifically-related expertise to very powerful prospective hosts.
I'm really glad there are several folks like yourself with the smarts and the determination to blaze new trails with TS Scripting. It means a lot to folks like me who are watching our modeling future unfold so nicely, clearly, and quickly before our eyes thanks to the effort of folks like yourself. Thanks.
Again, great hearing from you and thanks.

Yo Nez... guess what?
You're absolutely right! Hahahaha! those speakers of mine DO sock (typo)!
I'll be working on that one right away! Oh, and the structure is not supposed to actually be on the surface of the lake it's supposed to be hovering in the middle of the skydome and actually is... although now that you mention it there are "other things" that I could use below the structure instead of water! (...ideas come flooding in here!...) Thanks for that little nudge! :D
Good constructive criticisms.... I'm likin' this!
Thanks!

Very cool 3dDude. I like the crystalline feel and the rich colours.
Two points that spring to mind - Assuming one enters and or leaves this space via the jump links at the bottom and assuming one experiences the video/audio on the top floor then the steps must be navigated at some stage. Whilst I like the floating steps concept the old man in me feels like a hand rail or two would not go astray (even though avatars don't have hands at the moment) - this would help to avoid the problem of accidentally walking off the edge of the steps.
Second - the video/audio region at the top feels awfully exposed to me - we are accustomed to watching movies and videos in darkened, enclosed spaces rather than on open platforms suspended high above a lake (we, most of us anyway!). Perhaps some sort of dome or smaller pyramid enclosing the viewing area. This could be tinted glass or even clear glass that tints darker once the 'play' button is pushed - assuming such a refinement is possible.
In product design it usually pays to remember the Human Factor - the more 'people friendly' a product - or in this case, space - is, the more people will feel comfortable with it.
Check out the Caligari truePlaces and notice how many seats there are in the various places - seats for avatars that look like a cross between a Dalek and a salt shaker? Given the nature of the avatars at present one would logically expect seats to be completely unnecessary - yet as humans we look for something to sit on in order to be comfortable - even in virtual setting where sitting is impossible. The seats make the environments more welcoming and more human.
Just some thoughts.....

Thanks W!ZARD, glad you like it... it's going to be one very fun place when it's finally finished and a practical place too in many ways as you are soon to see.
Regarding the hand rails, I actually HAD handrails before and removed them! Hahaha! The funny thing is, I removed them because of the fact that our Avatars will not always be without hands and arms, hence once Avatars DO have these apendages they will be constantly getting hung up on objects close to one's walking path, including hand rails! Besides... it adds to the fun to fall a few times, doesn't it? Hey, I'm 51 and it doesn't hurt me at all! :D

I like that idea of triggered tinting... let me mull that one over for a few days... it's a very interesting idea for other projects I'm currently developing as well. Thanks!;)
I kind of like the openess of this platform though... but maybe after it's all textured I may feel differently about that and I may just employ that idea.
Cool suggestions, thanks!
Oh... by the way... this original model just underwent some MAJOR developments... check out the untextured version2 in the images that follow! :D

Hi Jayr... sorry I didn't respond to you sooner but your response was so short I missed it until now - I know, lame but true.
The Fortress of Solitude idea is interesting. It would be fairly easy to pull off too. Would you like to collaborate on building one with me? I'm game if you are!
As for this particular WIP I'm headed in a different direction than that (see the Collaboration section of this forum and the post about trueSpace Musicians where my new responses clarify that). This particular Audio Video Lounge is also being designed with a partial Corporate usage in mind as well, where Group Leaders could use the facilities to introduce new concepts and events to their own sub-groups, using video and sound to reinforce the effect of their message.
I used to read the Superman Comics when I was a kid, saw all the movies and TV shows related to Superman, and I agree... there is potential there. I don't know a lot about scripting (since I only have TS6.6) but maybe there is some potential for utilizing scripting to achieve various capabilities and effects within a Fortress of Solitude type truePlace. What do you think?
I'm currently developing 12 simultaneous modeling projects, which is becoming the norm for me, although The Loft Project here has been moved to the top 3 in my priority list. Nevertheless, in about four days I should have this done and be ready to add another project to the mix, so if you'd like to collaborate on building a Fortress of Solitude that may be the one.
Let me know, and thanks!

Oh, one other thing folks...
It just ocurred to me that I never mentioned the connection between usage of the lower "Loft Park Level" and the upper "Loft Audio Video Lounge."
On the lower Loft Park Level there would occasionally be usage of the podium presentation section by those with groups whom they would like to address in that setting without the potential distraction of having the music from the Loft AV Lounge interfere with their presentation. Therefore it seems to me that the best way to offer BOTH piped down music as well as the capability of shutting that off would be to have the controller for both of those capabilities reside at the podium speaker control center, where there is a 5th button on the platform which could be used for that purpose.
That way, those who would like to have more room around them as they listen to the music of the Loft AV Lounge, or who would prefer to walk around the Park Level Gallery as they listened to whatever music was going on above, could simply "jump over the railings" alone or with others from the upper Pyramid and go to the podium there to pipe the music below. :D

A note directly to Caligari about this WIP:
The fact that I've been using a Copyright notice on all related images does not infer that I would expect any reward whatsoever for freely providing this work or similar ones to Caligari for use as a "truePlace" on Caligari Servers. I would gladly provide this particular modeling project to Caligari without any thought of reward apart from the genuine reward of seeing truePlaces themselves become environments much more widely and frequently used. Toward that specific objective I believe this particular WIP would help.
Should Caligari choose not to utilize whatever particular truePlace-type project I may create, I will just add these all to a "true-Place-type-Assets Portfolio" which I truly believe will come in handy in the very near future for my direct solicitation of potential Corporate Hosts and the acceleration of whatever similar projects they may wish to pursue through quick modification of my existing structures or design brainstorming on entirely new ones.
Just thought I'd clear that up in case anyone was wondering about it.
Regarding this particular WIP as a potentially successful Caligari Trueplace, the fact that the most frequently utilized thread within the "Collaboration" area of the Caligari Forums is a thread about "trueSpace Musicians" speaks volumes as to the potential popularity of this particular WIP concept as a truePlace, and while this WIP may not be the ideal setting for such an ongoing collaborative endeavor, it is perhaps a very good start. ;)

Cool... we have a bass playing keyboarder too! :D
The avatar in maroon has a bass... or was it the avatar in green (No strings or pegs so I can't remember now...)?
Seriously you guys... we CAN pull this off in a near-live jam session online, just check out my recent responses to Chester and the links they contain in the "Collaboration" area of the forum in the "trueSpace Musicians.." thread.
The software does exist now (cross-platform and free!) to make it happen and it WOULD be really awesome and fun for everybody involved. Check it out! :D

UPDATE:
Both the lower level and upper level have undergone extensive remodeling since these last images and are much better in several ways accordingly. I also semi-compromized with W!ZARD's suggestion for handrails by leaving the upper level steps as they are but connecting the upper pyramid with the lower park level via ramps with adjacent rails... no more jumping over the upper guardrails now.
The lower level has been revamped to incorporate more of the crystaline theme, as has the underside of both. Also the lower side of the upper pyramid now has four huge speakers similar to those in the pyramid struts for piping music to the park level.
All has been checked for scale with a dummy avatar as well.
Textured version follows very soon, more immediate projects are now finished.
Oh.. by the way... the Gallery on the park level is intended ONLY for photos (including a short bio) of trueSpace Musicians and Animators who contribute their works to the (hopefully eventual) truePlace (or shared space) Loft A/V Lounge Inauguration... and that "jump dome" (only called that because one must jump to get into it) has a purpose they will finalize. ;)

http://bestsmileys.com/buttons/5.gif End Of Thread http://bestsmileys.com/buttons/4.gif
OK folks, The Loft Audio Video Lounge is now completely finished in regard to the modeling and much of the texturing, and will be totally finished except for scripting sometime tomorrow night.
Late tomorrow night (Sunday) I'll place many related pictures in a new Loft-related thread within the "Finished Artwork" area of the forums here, along with additional accompanying text pointing out specific new features which will require some explanation as they are presented.
You will be seeing some features that have never been implemented in truePlaces yet (to my knowledge), although they should be very easy to create and maintain, and there is one special one which I will not be explaining to anyone but to the eventual Host AFTER those wishing to contribute their works (Audio/Video/Animation) have had their say on it. Also the Host will have a feature that NO ONE will know about until it goes live! ;)
There will be much more to do in this space than I have previously told you about, so here's part of what you're about to see:
(...and yes W!ZARD, you're wise and I did install BOTH ramps with rails! :D )
The central combined theme of The Loft is comprised of 5 Design Elements:
1) Audio Presentation in as many varieties and forms as possible, including "near-live" performances and "jam sessions" as described by me previously in the "trueSpace Musicians" thread in the "Collaboration" section of the forums here. There has also been attention paid for those who may wish to hold their own "concert" or sponsor one here as well, and more.;)
2) Video and Animation Presentation - Offsite Long Video Previews as well as Video Shorts and Animations created by trueSpace users (many slots will be available for this, and there are creative ways around the bandwidth issues) as well as MANY direct offsite weblinks for visitors who see your work there and readily click through to your site for whatever additional offerings you may wish to present to them.
3) A Park environment with music and lots to do as you explore it - The Park Level is now surrounded by an upper level walkway with a balcony overlooking the park and MANY small flatscreens along it's railings which provide Audio, Video, and Animation WebLinks (depicted on each screen) to the very hottest related websites that we can all think of together and with links rotating so new ones appear every day of the week... no one will be bored visiting THIS space at all... ever.;)
4) A Gallery dedicated ONLY to introducing trueSpace Musicians, Video Producers, and Animators to each other and to entirely new markets. - This is a large Gallery already but can easily be expanded in time if need be by utilizing the now unused space within the pyramid beneath the Park.
5) An asthetically pleasing, interesting, and unusual place where we will all feel comfortable inviting both formal and casual guests to join us live online anytime via truePlay. - I chose the Crystalline Theme for this project because of the beauty we all see in gems and due to the fact that in truePlace (unlike the real world) we can create awesome huge and symmetrical crystals for this theme without investing billions! Also there's just something about walking under and around a floating pyramid that is very cool, but for now at least you'll have to take my word on that! ;)
All in all, I'm very confident you will enjoy the idea of seeing this particular truePlace-type Structure online somewhere SOON, it will be a lot of fun and a very heavily-visited site wherever it ends up. Whether the Loft ends up on Caligari Servers (as a gift to Caligari and you) or I sell it to a new host along with a trueServe Server for their own usage and modifications will largely be up to how you all feel about it, so I did the best that I can for you.
I'll look forward to seeing your related responses throughout the week in the "Finished Artwork" area where your new Audio Video Lounge may just get adopted after all, first by each of you who would use it the most! ;)
Thanks for your suggestions and for being so patient with me, see ya then!
