I decided to create a new thread in the WIP section. I started with the idea of only posting at TruePlace but noticed not many people use it. The Pirate started his life here:

http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=2542

I will now only post updates in this thread and at the User's Gallery. This work still has a long way to go so starting this new thread will still have it's new developments and surprises.

If you enjoy it say so and if you don't SAY SO...saying nothing is the insulting part. We're all here to learn.
My work looks closer to Cartooning then Illustration so right a way there might be a stigma with some of you. If you think this stuff is easy try it...

First thanks to MadMouse for setting me straight on what programs to use and making my job easier. You are so right and cool too!
Spacekdet and Witch, I love your sense of humor! You make this place fun.
All the rest of you, wish we all lived closer, it would be a great party!
Enjoy the show....:)

Awesome pirate ! Kinda wondered what your avatar was based on and now I finally get it ! :D

Now you only need to attach the plank to a small dingy-like-pirate-ship...sorta like the small boat that JonnyDepp sailed (sinked?) in on in the first PirateOfTheCaribbean movie ;)

(Still a truePlay virgin, and completely overlooked that thread... didn't think WIP might hide inside  )

I was just moving older Pirate renderings around with ACDsee and decided to click Negative. If I worked for Disney this would look great in one of their rides...

Just thought it looked cool and wanted to share it.:)

This was definitely Post Processed!;)

Thanks for the compliments Shike and Prodigy. I hope you still say that when it's done. I hope WWitch is serious about joining the fun. There aren't too many Pirates in this world...or birds.

Looks great Bob. You've got a great expression on his face and an excellent pose. I'd love to see a parrot sitting on his arm.

What a truly scurvy dog. (er.. not you Bob ;) )

Steve,

You just answered #4 in more than one way!.. You'll see.;)

Question #1 and #3 will be a miracle if anyone gets it.

Shike was very close with his suggestion about #2 but you'll need #1 and #3 to get it right.

Stay Tuned!

Bob

There is something wrong with his mouth... It took me a bit to figure it out... for some reason, it looks like he is getting ready to loose his lunch or something. Otherwise, a briliant rendering.

Well his Dental Plan is not too good, is that it? What do you suggest? Take a look at the other link to earlier versions, does the cleaner teeth work for you?
I might have gone too far with tooth decay!:D
He's not winning a beauty contest that's for sure. To get the effect I actually placed a tooth within another tooth. By increasing and decreasing the size of inside tooth I can change their appearance.

Chuckle! Excellent pirate Steinie! I can't help wondering what his story is!

I get what Kena is saying but I also love the gold tooth and uneven dental work - are those whiskers under his bottom lip? I think that this is a little distracting/confusing. Great expression though.

Re using the truePlaces WIP gallery - I've been there a few times but I haven't figured out how to add a WIP.

I don't think It's the teeth so much as the shape of the mouth combined with the bug-eyes that makes him look like he hasn't got his sea legs. Not sure what you could do about it, since I'm not the best at organics. Maybe change his eyebrow a bit so that he looks more angry or excited rather than worried. :)

Basically, looking on the web for what I was talking about the following picture was the closest I could come. your poor pirate looks more like the bottom middle character. Combined with the shape of the mouth, the eyes seem to make him look a bit sick. UM... the pirate, not the bottom middle picture below which just looks worried. :D

Kena,
Thanks for taking the time to find the character expressions.
I might be holding back a few visual clues (their coming soon) which explains his expression. The Pirates expression I was after is not one of worry, sorry or angry but ....stupid. His IQ is one notch above existence. Does that make any sense?
Do you still think I should do some Dentistry on him? Also the whiskers might have to be reduced which was suggested also.

Sure does. The sort of person that amoeba's look down on. I've worked with a fair few in the past, they're not as uncommon as you'd think! I think you've caught the gormless look rather well.

>Do you still think I should do some Dentistry on him?

If you're after votes then mine is in the 'no' camp.

>Also the whiskers might have to be reduced which was suggested also.

Just a tad. It wouldn't hurt to retract the lower chin ones twenty percent or so.

Can't wait to find out where this is heading....

Just a couple thoughts...since I'm only a couple notches higher than my existence.
Have you considered a cutlass? A brace of pistols (with the anachronistic blunderbuss barrels, of course?
A woodpecker nest in his wooden leg?
I was thinking he needs more beard, not less... something bushy that he's woven some flaming gunpowder wicks into.
Somewhere where the 3 moths constantly circling his head can rest.
His hat needs a little something too...maybe a bullethole.

A good way to show a character that is slightly below par in the brain department is to have edifferent sized eyes. try making the left one abot 15% smaller. It might enhanse the stupidity factor and still help with the mis-eaten lunch. :D Or maybe more props will help, I'm not clear where you are going with it, so I would not know for sure.

Sadly yes and all too often. The two most abundant elements in the universe are hydrogen and stupidity!!

Given your further remarks about the expression you were after I'd say you've nailed it. Looking forward to the next installment.

<What is he doing>

Singing, "Yo Ho Ho and a bttle or rum..."

<Why does he love lumber>

Everybody needs something to love!

<No, his left foot is not in the air by mistake. Why>

He's a runner-up in the annual Pirates Hornpipe Dancing Competition.

<A pirate needs some swabby friends>

Everyone knows that swabby friends are more fun than non-swabby friends.

Great ideas everyone, creative bunch you are!

Here is the latest with a new Scurvy Friend. He still needs a tail and some toenails. I still want to clean up his whiskers as you suggested. A lot more to come...

A note from Scurvy Dog:

"Hey Caligari thanks for being late with the FUR" :D

Bring on cartoony mate it's all art.

Ah I've got it- his left peg is up in the air because he's standing on something on it. Barrel of grog? Dead good dog. Should the dog have an eyepatch :)

If a duckling can have four legs a dog can have an eyepatch. He must be a terrier they go mad for rats. Rats live on ships. In the bilges matey yaarrgg! <does weird piratical-type wink which is invisible unfortunately due to this being Universal Eyepatch Week>
