Well, just to show that I'm just not all about bad puns and auto-repeating tips and tricks, and that I do occasionally render something, I now present in addition to this run-on sentence the following render:
It's nowhere near what I saw in my mind's eye when I visualized it, but it looked interesting enough that I figured I'd post it. Something about walking the walk since I do a fair job of talking the talk.
Anyway, it's just a stage along the way to matching what's in the mind's eye.
The composition is a mess and it's far too colorful and yes, the scale is pretty bad. But hey, it's a WIP.

An interesting start - I like the texturing on the stump. The ground texture I'm not so crazy about but then again I don't know where you are going with this - and besides, mabe that's what the ground looks like in Enchanted Mitten!! |

Here is another stab in the dark.
W!zard, if you were standing here your pointy-toed w!zard boots would be soggy.
Steinie, you're the first to see thru my pathetic attempt at growing ferns.

Cool. I like the texturing on the stump a lot and also the texturing on the soggy earth tufts scattered around. In the second image you changed the angle and zoom which gave a very nice saturation boost to the stump texture via the sunlight now on it, maybe a closer zoom (without completely losing the background models) with some tiny insect life on the stump would also look good.
Are you going to add a "swamp thing" or is THIS the "swamp thing?" ;)

Ah yes - a vast improvement. The different lighting angle helps to show that we are looking at a VERY swampy scene, revealing that what I originally saw as ground is actually water! The reflected trees look more like reflections than shadows in this second pic. I like it.
Re your ferns - New Zealand is the home to the worlds largest ferns (and the worlds largest earthworms but that's another story) and in their young state these King Ferns unfold their fronds very much as you have shown them here - tight spirals that slowly unroll.
I also 2nd 3dvd's question: is there a swamp thing to come or is this the swamp thing?
PS. Proper Wizard boots must be both pointy AND waterproof or else the magic spells get earthed through the damp socks!! ;) :D |

I like the colouring/saturation of the second pic more seems less 'forced' and more natural. The ferns look like some fantasy plant to me but then I know squiddly about botany so am far from qualified to comment there, even though I just did! A bump map to disturb the reflections slightly would help with the impression of water. Oh, and the shadow top left.
Minor quibbles on what's shaping up to be a fab piccy |
