Wow, nice concept. Gave me a strange feel - like Nagasaki meets Stone Henge.
No critique here. The only thing I came up with is changing the sky for different 'feel' effects
Cool pic |

Wow, those hippies are really stoned!
I'm always amazed by your work Kate - you seem equally at home with the hyper-real and the surreal.
I'm intriqued by the object these guys are worshipping. Decorum prohibits me from saying what I think it looks like but I will say that I've worshipped a few of them myself from time to time :o :o !
It does remind me a little of Stonehenge of course in which case the only thing missing is the coachloads of camera weilding tourists.
As Methusela said, great grass man! No wonder the hippies are so stoned! There's one in the forground who's not only legless but armless too!;) ;) |

They can't be hippies, they don't have the long hair. Must be those Preppie stoners. :p
Anyway, looking great Kate. :) I've always liked ancient artifacts and technology for some reason so I'm interested to see where this goes. The only suggestion I would make is to maybe change the sky to an overcast sky. I think that would match the lighting better. |

Your sick Kate....have you been reading Sigmund Freud?

I've got to go there is a Doctor waiting.... |

@ W!ZARD & Steinie - Holy $^%*, that never even occurred to me! Now I feel all grubby. Well, that's one thing sorted - a new monument type thing needs to be made. |

I wondered what wizard meant by "worshipped a few himself!" :p |

Georgia O'Keefe's work might prove inspirational WW, mathematical surfaces and totemic, iconic paintings

A few minor touches here and there but the main thing is a slightly less, errr, distracting shrine! I'm fairly confident this one is quite innocent (though somene will probably prove me wrong!). Now, what else to do with it...

The other, uh, thing was more worthy of worship...the latest incarnation looks more like a birdbath.
Not that there's anything wrong with that.
I'm just not sure that it's the right...thing. |

LOL - Hopefully you don't need me to draw you a picture!!;)
@Kate - Well Freudian or otherwise I vastly prefer your first monument to the second bird-bath one. I lived in India for a while and there it is common to see religious shrines with exactly that motiff as well as 'boy' ones too. The locals give them a pat for good luck and always pass them in the same direction as they go by. Believe it or not they actually help to keep the traffic moving!
I actually thought that you were you were aiming for that significance with the first model which I though was very cool (and actually very 'Witchy' as well - the 'Feminine Mysteries', datura on the broom handle and all that).
Sadly the birdbath version just doesn't have the same mystical vibe IMHO. So I'm with Spacekdet on this - bring back the other.. er.. thing!
Of course on the other hand a bird bath would also be very appropriate for you - you could just add Bird to the picture!!:D |

I miss the first one but I don't know why...
The second one needs a little brass thingie like a drinking fountain out of order.
Both have a comical feel to them. |

They came to worship their god.
And suddenly it appeared: Medusa
Then all became stone. :(
Maybe you can give an other lighting, fog and a low standing sun for long shadows. :) |

Depending on the intent, my first thought was it needs something to offset the stone. Perhaps a copper dish for stone-money/alms :) |

for me, the UV projections seem to be off. you might want to make sure that the "top" of the UV projections for each object is at the "head/top" of your praying stones. I would also change the alter stone to something a bit different... make it worthy to be worshiped etc. The near grass is good, but the distant hills look like a blanket with dirty cloths making lumps in them. The water looks kinda like the background color was used - may want to texture some highlights in, and I would make it a cloudy day with a beam of light hitting the alter. Just for atmosphere.
I like where you are going with this, but I would change the alter into something more abstract. I didn't see anything wrong with your first one. :D
then again, if you want a stonehenge kind of look, try making the object below and using sub-division layers to morph it out with. |

Thanks for the input guys. The first, ummm, thing, is back, with some slight adjustments. Let people make draw their own conclusions! I also now know what direction I'm going to take with this.
@kena - No UV in play, the stone is a procedural shader. You did make me laugh though, thumbs up for the near grass (texture) but not for the background which is a photograph of actual hills! :) It's also only a temporary pic just to fill the space (holiday snap from cornwall) until I find something better. Trying to go for the 'edge of cliff' look.
@W!ZARD - you have no idea how much restraint was involved to stop me putting Bird in as the object of worship! :) |

Yay! That's the spirit! Art should be at least a little provocative, I think.

LOL - at the risk of recycling a dodgy joke I must say that I can sympathise having worshipped a few good looking birds myself from time to time;)
Looking forward to further developments.. |

Input? Suggestions - here's some ideas! (Not serious ones though ;) ).
I hope you don't mind Kate but I couldn't resist :D .
I had lots of fun doing this - the hardest part was coming up with a decent caption. So I came up with two captions.
Caption 1: "What's that big stone thing then? It looks like a giant.... tongue!"
Caption 2: "Oh no! Steinie's been eating the mushrooms!".
Oh yeah - I added the birds for Bird. |
