Your projects are always well thought out and have an involved backstory, keep up the good work. I look forward to seeing a long shot of a whole city of such dwellings... |

This is an amazing project, very nice work theuns!!!
Oddly enough, I'm reading a book that deals with this very
subject, it's called ON by Adam Roberts. |

Hey Ambrose, long time no wrinte [in here] ;) tnx, I'll have a look...
Tnx, Kena/Spacekdet, will take a peek at the links... :)
Hi SteveBe, glad you like it :) let us know when the book is out, would love to have a look at it...
I feel like designing a new part of the colony today, perhaps a domicile unit... still thinking of changing the existing designs later on so that it doesn't appear so linear and symetric... perhaps bended bamboo poles? will play around with it some....

Adam Roberts rocks! If you like real innovative sci fi he's well worth a read! I've read all his books and have just finished his latest one "Gradisil". I too thought of 'On' whilst watching this cliff hanger scene develope - looking very good. This could make a very interesting truePlace. |

Okay, started with the next section of the colony, the habitat or domicile units... these look very different from the platforms I've done until now. They consist more of bamboi-like poles, bent and laced together...
You'll see from the picture that its main body is fixed to the side of the cliff, with smaller nodes/compartments stuck on top of it, suspended with ropes to the Shroom overhand...
Alreayd have the main structure of the domicile hollowed out with three storey floors inside where the Mec-orgians live in... those I'll show in the next image...
Below the Domicile is a large wood platform for washing and drying clothes, making and eating food and general daily activities...

Alright, this is the same scene as above but a cutaway from behind so you can see the layout on the inside...
Starting from the floor, you have a staircase to the first floor with shelving under and next to the stairs... the first and second floor has little compartments adjacent to them for extra space...
1st floor would be main working area for making food and clothes etc. The compartments to the side would be pantries for storage of supplies...
2nd floor would be main sleeping area for children with the compartments to the sides and the attic above is sleeping quarters for couples and adults...

Alrighty, after some deliberation with some fellow concept designers, I've decided to change the wooden, bamboo look to something more exotic... Shroom Blisters... they are basically cross-bred versions of shrooms, twice as strong as normal Shrooms but sterile and fed crystal fibers to strengthen it...
Here is a view of a Blister domocile with suspension ropes and various items like the rope cranes to the left that will give access and some stretched skins set out to dry next to some vats and sacks...

Now they look like a collection of seed pods. I personally liked the bamboo look better, but I guess it would be harder to explain with all those dangerious creatures about. the fences are still too bleached out. ;) |

yeah, I like the bamboo idea more myself, but my colleagues also pointed out the vulnerability to strong winds and earth quakes and even attacks on the colony...
The 'pods' or blisters fits in better with the Shroom idea and these blister homes never have to be expanded with extensive rebuilding like wood structures, because they are just fed more crystal fibers and it grows in the area you feed it, 'voila' a new room or expanded compartment... :)
Haven't played with the wood texture yet, will look better in the next image...
Thanks for the comments Kena... |

I like the addition of the curved suspension ropes - they give a more natural flowing feel to the scene - I agree with earlier commenbts about the white picket fences - they look too uniform and too light IMHO. This conflicts a little with the organic shape of the shroom houses.

okay, redid the fence texturing somewhat and lightened the blister to see it better... still need a lot of work on the texturing to make it look better... and yes, the crane wood texture is next to be changed ;) |

another update... designed the central housing in the torso that links the neck, chest plate and arm ... later also the backbone or vertabra to the pelvis and legs...
ps. the object to the left is just the control object for the Nurbs central housing to the right...
