Excellent work! - Tech Illustrators rejoice :-) and my favorite Cornish saying "ert be noice and Shoiny"
Thanks for than xmznflash. Here are some of my favourite Cornish sayings:
"another pasty, please you", "proper job" and "b****y tourist, outta my way"
Anyway, more help needed. Here is my very, very nearly finished pump. However, I need to attach an oval-shaped label about 1mm thick which has the curvature of the large silver housing. This label needs the customer's logo etc on it.
1/ How do I model the curved oval
2/How can I get the logo onto it?
The label is made from a brass type material and is all nice and shiny apart from the lettering.

The best way would probably be to create an oval out of a cylinder, then boolean intersect it with the housing where you want the label to be.
(Be sure to save before, and to use a copy of the housing)
Then move the new object so that it protrudes from the housing about 1mm.
Save.
Create a copy of the housing, and boolean subtract it from the label object.
That should do it. |

My inclination would be to make a hollow tube by subtracting a cylinder with diameter the same as your housing from one of diameter 1mm larger. Then I would do a a boolean intersect of an oval solid with this tube to create the curving oval shaped plate.
The texturing depends a little on the lettering - is it flat or embossed and what finish is it compared to the metal finish? You might be able to apply a texture with transparency map, using a cylindrical UV, or a material rectangle.
If the text os embossed but simple enough, you could create it using the text tool and extrude and then judicious positioning to match the curve.
Hope that makes sense; I'm no expert so others may come up with better ideas... |

Woo Hoo! That's one clean machine! All the pumps I ever used were rather grubby but for a sharp bit of product illustration you've done an excellent job Dude. Good work well done.
Have you considered making an animated version showing the parts interacting? That could look very nice indeed. |

Thank you W!ZARD, Yes, I have considered this - my customer may want to show the water path, as this is a very clever design, the pump works using only the flow of water through it.
I hope he doesn't as I have too much to do already, and I don't want to run before I can walk. TrueSpace is still very new to me. |

Hi Nez (& turumdarak),
Thanks to both of you for the advice. I successfully modelled the name plate using Nez's suggestion.
I am not sure about the text yet as I have only seen a picture of part of the plate at the moment. If I have any problems I will post another cry for help |

"the pump works using only the flow of water through it". Intriguing - I'm not an animation or physim kind of guy (well not yet anyway - I'm suspecting tS7.5 may well change that!) but I can't help wondering if the water flow path could be demonstrated using the physics engine and a lot of balls - perhaps I should say a lot of small spheres :D Just thinking aloud here.... |

lol, same here, I deal with machinery all the time and rarely are they shinny even though we do everything imaginable to make them so. Seeing this pump makes me think, "see, it can be done!". Please enter into Caliagari contest, it looks really really good.
Hi noko,
Thanks for your input. Whilst all the modelling was carried out in TS7.5, because I am very inexperienced with TS shading & rendering and I needed to give my customer an indication of what he would get fairly quickly, I actually rendered it in Carrara 5pro (exporting the files as .dxf) using the stock Carrara shaders, 3 point lighting scene and a free HDRI from Evermotion. Rendering time was >2 mins.
I don't think, therefore, that I should enter it into a TS competition.
I am sure that given time, I will learn Vray & TS shaders & sincerely believe that I will achieve as good, if not better, render.

Brian - I'd submit it to the gallery anyway. The upload page gives you a space to note what software you used. The criteria for the gallery is that trueSpace must be used for a significant part of the process - which is clearly the case here as you modelled your pump with tS.
I once did a series of renders using Vue 5 Esprit featuring models and scenes built and largely textured in trueSpace and did not submit them to the gallery - only to have Roman specifically ask me to do so.
The gallery is to showcase what can be done with trueSpace and that includes integrating it into workflows that include other software packages.
I'd enter it anyway - after all there's nothing for you to lose! ;) |

I too recommend entering it with discription of whole work process which is actually good that tS can be used with other products. So in a way that is even better :D. |

Hi W!ZARD & noko,
OK, then I will! - as soon as it's finished. I am waiting on the label details from my customer.
Thank you for your support.

Hi All,
I was just wondering if there is another link for the tutorial on threads. I followed the only one I found in the early pages of this thread and it comes up page not found?? Can anyone point me to the current location of that tutorial?
Many thanks

That's Dele's Site and he hasn't been here for two weeks, maybe he is on vacation? He comes here a lot so stay tuned. In the mean time I'm sure someone will find a site for you. I'll look myself too. |

Here are some hits returned on 'screw thread model'
One (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showpost.php?p=8097&postcount=102)
Two (http://forums.caligari.com/discus/messages/1578/5658.html?)
Three (http://forums.caligari.com/discus/messages/1584/18379.html?)
I got more hits searching the 'old' forum (http://forums.caligari.com/scripts/discuscgi/board-search.cgi).
Not sure what happened to Deledesigns website, he had a good tut there. |

Sorry about that Mic. Money always gets tight right after tax season and I haven't had a chance to get my site back up. I should have it back up in a few weeks though I think.

Busy, busy, busy. I've been working hard on a couple of projects lately and haven't had much time for the forums. Actually, I don't think I've ever been so busy before. One of the projects I'm hoping to share on the forums here when I'm done. It's not 3d, but knowing how many musicians there are around here it might be useful to some tSers. :) BTW, was that you over on the SwishMax forums or the other Steinie? The music project is a flash thing so I've been in those forums a little bit and I noticed a Steinie over there. |

Délé, Well now I wish it was me over there I would be with fine company! Although I can play many instruments I don't consider myself a Musician. That other "Steinie" is an impostor! ( but he/she probably sounds better then me):) |
