Here's another advancement!:D
I've made a bold and daring decision: the entire animation, which will be exactly 4 minutes, 53 seconds, and 15 frames (at 29.97 frames per second), is going to be contained in a single shot. This animation is essentially going to be a walk through of a city (as well as it's outskirts). Here is a detailed description:
It will begin, as you have already seen, looking at the moon. It then pans down from there to a streetlight, which soon is revealed to be one of many positioned in front of a row of houses. The camera then pans into one of these houses through a bedroom window as a woman closes the blinds. It may or may not be realized by the audience, but the bedroom is for a little kid, and the woman is his mom, tucking him in for the night. The camera pans out of the room into a hallway, just as the mother comes out, closing the door behind her. Next, the camera goes down the hall, away from her, and heads into the next room over. Inside the room is a man sleeping with his head down on a desk. Sitting on the desk is an alarm clock, which says 10:24 pm. As the view passes over it, light pours in from the window, and and the time fades into saying 6:48 am. The camera turns back around, revealing that the man is no longer at the desk. This is to show the pass of time between night and morning. The camera heads back out into the hall and down a flight of stairs towards ground level. The view passes by a kitchen, glimpsing the family eating breakfast. The man, who turns out to be the father, gets up, puts on his coat, grabs a brief case, and walks out the door, with the camera close behind. You then pan out from the house to a view of the whole neighborhood, then back down to a different street, where the camera begins to follow a boy on his bike, doing a paper route. The boy rides across a street, just as a car halts at a stop sign. Rather than continuing to follow the boy, the camera goes after the car, close behind. After rotating around the car a few times, the camera stops on a view of a city skyline. A helicopter whizzes by, and the camera follows that to the city, where it pans into an office building from a window. The view then locks onto a lady exiting her cubicle, who heads into an elevator. As the doors close and she heads down, the camera, still outside, facing the doors, goes into the floor, coming out at the bottom level, where the woman heads into a cafe through a revolving door. The camera goes in one circle, then comes back out of the building, following a man carrying a newly bought cup of coffee. This man heads down a crowded block, where he stops to buy a newspaper. You pan behind the newspaper stand to a cab. The cab drives down a good portion of the city, and as the camera follows, it goes through a load of obstacles (people, fire hydrants, passing cars, streetlights, etc), out onto a view of a clock tower, where the time shows 5:00 in the afternoon. You pan down, only to find yourself viewing the exact same car that you followed in the beginning of the animation. The camera follows it from a side view, so many objects fly by in front of it. As one of the objects goes by, the view blurs up, then refocuses on the car, which is now in the neighborhood you started in. The camera pulls out fast, and pans from there into a view of the same house you started in at the very beginning. The father pulls up in front as the camera gets closer, and when he opens the door, the view goes straight past him to the back. The camera heads into the backyard through a back door, revealing the mother and her kid sitting on a bench, looking at the sunset. The camera pulls up, and looks straight up at the sky, just like in the beginning of the animation, then fades to black.
END CREDITS:D

I watched your animation, and it's looking great! Very smooth camera movements, and so far, good choices of camera angles!
After that, believe it or not, I did read through your "script". I like what you've described...it sounds like a good flow that will keep the viewer waiting to see what's happening next. :D
Looking forward to your next installment! |

Thanks! I really appreciate the comments (and the criticism!;)). It helps me to see what the viewers (in this case, you) think of how I've done so far. As for the script, that's likely to undergo some changes as I go along, making this. If you found that interesting, however, read this!:D
The whole thing is actually composited together with separate layers, rather than being one giant .scn file. Currently, it is made of 11 video tracks (layers), as well as 8 audio tracks, with more to come as this project advances. Each piece of video footage is created in trueSpace (v7.5, and now 7.51), then rendered to a folder as a .tga sequence. I then import each sequence into Sony Vegas (compositor, video editor, audio mixer), then back out as an uncompressed .avi file, which allows me to keep the alpha channel. Next, I go back to my original vegas file, where I import the new .avi file, enable the alpha channel, and composite it in with the other footage. Finally, I change the speed of each set of tracks, to go along with the music.
Then I go back back to step one and do it all over again (with a different piece of footage)!
Hope you got something out of that! Perhaps I'll show a screengrab...
On a different note, W!ZARD, have you gotten a chance to view it yet? I particularly enjoy (but am not limited to) your C & C. It always seems to have great content.
Looking forward to hearing from you (or anyone, for that matter:))! |

I did some more research on video compression and found that by encoding to flv format, I could decrease the file size by about 50% without losing any quality! Now, the same update posted above is only 2 Megs, and you can hardly tell the difference!

Better and better! Smaller file size and the single shot scene, both great decisions on your part! Remind me not to enter the same month you submit this:D |

I've begun modeling the characters you will eventually see in the animation. so far, I've started on the woman who you see at the very beginning. In the video, she will be clothed in a bathrobe, and in order to make it look as realistic as possible, she will be created from the ground up. You probably get what I mean.;) |

Looks good so far but the chest need a bit more shape. Remember that there is a rib cage underneth the breasts, supporting them, or rather, the breasts sit on the rib cage. I think you need to give more evidence of the ribcage underneth, i don;t mean make her skinny, just more of a foundation under the details.
Have a look at this tutorial i found a few years ago, it's for 3d max but i've followed it in truespace and it works well, although the final result is a bit more comic-book/ idealized female form that what you may be after if you follow it strictly it does give you a fairly simple mesh you can adujust to get what you want:
http://www.3dtotal.com/ffa/tutorials/max/joanofarc/joanmenu.asp
p.s. the part about modelling the head doesn't seem to fit truespace, but the body part is fine. |

it's these areas where the problem is:
http://www.lothissen.co.uk/body.jpg
the chest below the collar-bone is to far forward, look at the side elevation of your model then look at this picture:
http://www.lothissen.co.uk/photo3.jpg
i know the woman in this picture is arching her back but you can see the difference. the blue highlight shows how the ribcage extends below the breats, on your model it's missing, in this picture anyway, i cant tell in the new one. I'm not having a go at your modelling skills, on the whole this is a good model and done quite fast, it's just this one area that it needs altering.
incase you're wondering, i got the reference pic from characterdesigns.com, a usefull site for all kinds of reference pics for people. |

OK. I've finished the body, and now I've moved on to the head. I decided to follow nowherebrain's tutorial for it, so I hope he doesn't mind.;)

I'm back!;)
...and look what I have to show! I've done some reworking on the logos, and I'm pretty happy with it by this point, though some critique would do quite nicely
about now.:D Although the animated version is much nicer to look at, I've also attached screenshots for people who can't/won't download the file.
In a few minutes, I'll get back to work, so look forward to another update by tonight or tomorrow morning.
Either way, what do you think? |

Slow times at the TS Forums, will pickup soon. The changes you made are nice. Why didn't you change the icons at the bottom with the new ones?
Of course you know it is your responsibility to comment on other peoples work too! ;) Have you voted for any of the Challenges yet? Not really your problem as much as a Forum problem. You put something up for criticism and there is no response. Sometimes offering Twinkees as a reward gets comments back:D
I know you were away for a while and it will be nice to have you back!:) I aways enjoyed your work. |

What icons are you talking about? If you mean my signature, I'm going to keep those the way they are, because they were created to only show the basic attributes of the logos. All of the extra "special effects" will only be shown in my animations.
On another note, you did remind me of something important: I still don't have star-files.net up and running!:D
Of course you know it is your responsibility to comment on other peoples work too! ;)
That might be a good idea on my part (And I mean it!). A lot of the time, I will enjoy watching other users work, but don't make the response that goes through my head. Most of the time, I won't keep track of it, and the asking/giving ratio gets a little off. I'll just make a mental note of your advice so the desired result becomes apparent.:D
About the project:
Some of my family members said that the star-files.net logo looked "overdone"
towards the beginning. What does anyone here think of it?
Also, I said in my earlier post that I would have another update by now. Sadly, I do not, so I'm going to be making this a "first priority" today.
Hope you like it once I do!

OK!
After I added the effects to the Star-Files.net logo, it made me feel uneasy about the Bicken Studios logo, which was not as impressive. What I want more than most things is a strong opening, and by improving the SF logo, I was not meeting that goal. So here it is, the final Bicken Studios logo! No more improvement to the effects (on both logos)! It's time to move on. I didn't attach the animated version because I don't think I've made enough significant changes, but don't worry, it'll be put up soon enough!:D |

I created most of the glow effects in post production using either Sony Vegas or Adobe After Effects. Some of the glow effects (for example, the moon) were created in Adobe photoshop as an image, then imported into tS for rendering. |

Hi all!
I've begun work on the end credits. I know what your probably thinking: "Get to the story for God's sake!"
But believe it or not, this actually helps me to have a smoother work flow, because at least I know how to tie it together properly. Either way, I've attached what I've done so far to this post. What do you guys think of it? |

Hi there 2much4u
I think it's great work. Especially like the quiet sound turning into a 'shock' effect.
The only thing I can offer, using my 'directors eye', is to have your name appear as quickly (on off) as you have it in the beginning, and leave it on screen longer (if not the longest) at the end of the clip (not having it static, but with the 'ripple' effect you have applied throughout).
Hope this is of use to ya.
Keep up the good work. |

Thanks for the input. I truly appreciate it. My intentions with this WIP are, at this point, not very clear, I presume, but here's the way I see it. This WIP has a very soft, if not "beautiful" quality to it. My next animation, however, is already planned out, and it is going to be more of a rough, action filled animation. With the end credits of this, I'm trying fill that large gap, as if to make both animations like multiple parts of a single presention.
The two most important things to me concerning this are that (a.) I make it seem as professional as possible, and (b.) I humble myself (meaning, I give myself credit for all I've done, but include numerous other people in it, and also have the last person listed as a "special thanks.")
Altogether, I'm going to see how this ends up, and if changes are needed, I'll make them after I'm done.
Either way, here's the next two updates: one for the actual animation, the other for the end credits. |

It's been a while since my last post, and it's about time too! I've finally completed the base model of the woman within the animation. Next is texturing, and after that, clothes. I've since decided against the bathrobe. Jeans and a t-shirt will do better. I've included the .RsObj file as well as both a screenshot (for those who can't download) and a .cob file (for all you tS6ers). |

Looks good! :)
Now you need to Flatten the construction history to get rid of the mirror plane and all the undo stuff.
Then UV map. Textures. Rigging, morphing, and animation all await. The work is only just beginning. :D
For UV mapping organic models, Headus UVLayout is a great product, but pricey. The free option Roadkill, is ok and will get the job done. |

I'll be getting an opportunity to do more work on "the untitled" this weekend. I just reformatted my PC and upgraded some hardware, and I'm just about to do a fresh install of trueSpace 7.51.
In light of all this, I'm considering rendering all of my shots over again in HD, after going back through my old files and revamping the final output by adding textures, creating bump maps, and reworking the models to look closer to a "professional" standard. This implies that I also change the look of all my renderings up to this point. I am also going to go with what Kena said in response to my original posting, by changing the Bicken Studios logo to look more metallic. The text will also be changed to 3D, instead of being done in Post Production. Glow effects will continue, but I'm going to put more emphasis on realism. Lastly, the new one, if done, will be rendered at film speed (24 fps), instead of NTSC (30 fps). This will bring it closer to looking the way the pros do it.
Overall, I'm about to jump to it and get going, but I want to know what you all think first: should I? If you think it's a good move, any suggestions? |
