There you go, nice bottle of malt whisky as promised. Mmmmmm!!

Lightened a few areas to give more contrast between floor and chairs. I've actually got a cut glass decanter. modelled it several years ago, and it appears in a few of my images. May introduce it somewhere in the background. Not sure about the lamp being lit. Cant get the look I'm after with a variation in brightness of the shade. Maight go back to have a look though.

Great work chris! Was TrueSpace used for most of the work? How did you work on the textures and UV mapping? This looks like a Vray render? or Lightworks?

Anyway, I love it! it's a soothing calm composition!

Used truespace 6.6 for most of the modelling. The only thing that isn't truespace is the horse. I was going to model it, but it was a last minute decision to add it, and I just used the standard Poser horse. Did a poly reduction and messed around with the mesh a bit. Render was with vray in 7.1 with GI, caustics, the works. This is reduced from the orginal.

Ordered 7.5 CD then got a message to say it was being updated, and would I wait. Still waiting with bated breath to see if i can dispense with using my favourite 6.6 fro modelling.

Cheers

Chris

Made a couple of new items to fill the shelves. Thought they might be deserving of a separate post before incorporating them into the scene. Quite pleased with their 'reasonably low poly count' and the speed of putting them together.

Great work Chris, just out of curiosity, what is the poly count for the whole scene so far??

wow - you should submit that one to the monthly context all by itself.

Veeerryy nice Chris! You should send this picture off to the "Antiques Roadshow" TV program and see what these things are worth!! The certainly look convincing. Posted on another forum by anyone other than you I would have thought this was a photo!

Agreed! The only giveaway being the 'plane' they're standing on.

Very convincing props - great realism. I'm sure there are lots of folks who'd like to know more about how you've achieved such great texturing...

Sadly probably won't help me that much as I don't have VRay etc but highly inspiring nonetheless...

No idea what the total polycount is Mouse, but I'll look into it. Not as high as you may think. It's amaxing what you can get away with using the right bump maps and appropriate geometry. The main power hungry issue is rendering with transparency and caustics.

Texturing is very simple here. Trophy is the standrard silver metal, maybe tweaked abit, from the lightware shader library. Uses a few very basic bump images repeat around the circumference to indicate engraved and cast detail. The jug was modelled quickly using SDS on an extruded octagon. Textured with glossy shader with a low value, and a simple floral repeated bump map. This was just a quick test render with vray, and HRDI lit only. You can achieve a similar result without HDRI. I did this a few years ago in 5.2 using an area light, and some background surfaces to reflect in the metal. No surface geometry, only bump maps out of the standard library. It's all smoke and mirrors.

I put my understanding of light down to my being a Physicist .

Have a go yourself.

Wow! This is really spectacular!

Picking minor nits...l the door and door frame seem just a little too shiney for the rest of the room.

The developers did a lot of work on the vray materials for the 7.51 release. You might want to try tweaking around with the lampshade again. You could try using the mapped phong for the transmission instead of SSS.

You should add the 1966 Jules Rimet trophy. :D

There's no such thing as the 1966 trophy. As far as I know they used the same one for years. Anyway, it was only England who won it that year, so I'm not interested including it.

I know, I just meant the one used in '66. Wasn't it stolen right after that or something?

Anyways, they look really good. Excellent shaders etc.

I think it was stolen, then found by a wee dog, in a ditch. It's now in the possession of Brazil. Something about them winning it 3 times and getting to keep it.

Anyway I've won a few more trphies this week.

Getting a bit carried away with this. Need to get back to the main scene I think.

Your room is getting so good that if you could make the picture frame

a new digital tv and a fire place animation I could talk about buying it.

Fantastic job!

Ooh, ahh.;) it's quite nice. It's probably the first render I have seen here that I'm not judging...just looking at, as if someone sent me a picture to look at. A pleasure to see.

Hi Chris,

I tried to reach you via email a couple of days ago, but not heard back from you - could be I have an out of date email for you :)

Could you mail me at thomas@caligari.com please?

Thanks!

looks quite realistic chrisj.

The one thing I would comment on is the perimeter of the glass trophies. They both have a very thick black edge to them. Not sure if that's your goal or not though. Otherwise fantastic!

Tom,

I replied to your message a couple of days ago. I've sent again.

The black banding round the glass is something I didn't intend. Not sure what the problems is, but I'm investigating settings for the shader and the ray tracing. Could be that the scene is only illuminated by HDRI, but if anyone can suggest a solution, it would be appreciated.

Hi Chris,

Darn, didnt come through some days ago, nor has it come through today - something in the emails must be causing them to get blocked on the way through our virus / spam filters :(

Let me follow up with our tech people, see if we can do anything about it. If you have any other email addy you can send from, perhaps we can try that (or send it as a text, not html, message.... not sure, just clutching at straws as to what might get it unblocked!).

Apologies for the inconvenience. Oh, one other idea, you might be able to private message me here on the forums too. Sorry this is such a hassle.

Best regards,

Tom

Hm, I've seen this effect with old real glass too (lead glass). Your glass is very thick, maybe it's already the so called total reflectance. What happened if you choose a lower amount of refraction? Normal is 1.4 to 1.8.

Only some ideas for glass. ;)

Some old glasses have little gas bubbles or striae inside.

Handcrafted glass is not exact round.

Maybe a little different colour.

Besides, your picture looks very realistic. :)
