My point
Must be that I really liked that first one from 3dDude.
Maybe kind of black but overall suits the story line well, well whatever, the mode you've so far that is.
Your last attempt is more real but doesn't fit into your overall story book cartoon style you achieved so far.
So for my cents go back a bit, we don't need realism here ;)

Would post process not be the best way to go for now? I'm sure that'll be horrendously offensive to any purists out there but Iwould imagine you're going to do some post work anyway so why not make life a touch easier? |

Yup, you are both right. Here is even more realistic but I am getting too far away from the simple style of the book. I will regress some...:D |

Now that's really nice.
But to real for the book ;)
Very nice indeed, well done!

Wow... there's some really nice versions and excellent critiques here since I was here last!
OK... I take it you'd rather play with altering the material in your scene yourself rather than post it here, no problem. Here's what I can do then...
Attached you will find an image of that "Bubbler" Cobfile I made which has a newer heavily modified version of that first Vray Bubble Material which I posted previously in Post #169 here. The modified settings to achieve that look are also posted below.
Note, no one but Paul will be able to modify a Vray Material correctly for his particular scene since he alone of course has that original scene. The Vray GI settings he uses heavily affect nearly every aspect of the material settings when rendered, as is normal for Vray renders... the scene "defines" the Vray Materials... not the other way around.
Obviously I wasn't shooting for realism with any of these efforts given that it would be inappropriate to the non-realistic original nature of the overall scene the Material will be needed for. That said, I've had some fun playing with "toon-type" versions of this Material, but without the original Vray GI Scene Environment to work from, whatever any of us produce which looks great may end up looking pretty bad in the original environment... anybody's guess on that.
Anyhow, unfortunately the original "oily/irridescent-looking" image I used as the base for my first Vray Bubble Material here is ok... but I believe it could be replaced with a better one if you do a Google Image Search for "Mother of Pearl," "Irridescent Shell," or something similar. That said, here's the settings as they are now:
Alter Original Vray Bubble Texture as follows and then tweak it within your original GI Scene setting:
Color - Leave original irridescent image or substitute a similar "mother of pearl" kind of image
Reflectance - Change to "Fresnel"
ambient=0.025, diffuse=0.025, specular=200.000, exponent=80.000, reflection=20.000, transmission=0.900, IOR=1.591, Physically Based (checkbox)=Checked, Color=Medium Purple, Angle=0.500, Internal Reflection Weight (checkbox)= Checked
Transparency - Change to "c_alpha"
alpha = 0.400
Displacement - none
TextureBumpTransparency -
AlphaTest (dropdown)=Disabled
AlphaTestValue=0.000
DiffuseStrength=5.000
DiffuseTexture(Image)= Leave original irridescent image or substitute a similar "mother of pearl" kind of image
Sample image of above follows, and best of luck!

3DVD, do not think that I do not appreciate your help as I really do but I am starting to think that maybe the problem lies in my workflow as I am doing all of this in model side and some things don't translate from one material editor to the other....bear with me while I try this latest idea. I am messing with Roman's head at the moment...:D |

No sweat Paul,
Sorry I was in a hurry here when I posted last, there was serious lightning right here in my neighborhood so I tried to post fast and get off the computer is all, after reading my own post above now though I can see I may have seemed a tad bummed out, but I'm really not at all.
I really like the materials you made in LW, they look fantastic! Vray is much more of a bear to work with I'm sure you'd agree, but the results are awesome when you tweak the settings to perfection, so I've spent a lot more time playing with Vray than LW since I got TS7.51... just trying to learn how to use Vray as best I can. It's gotta be the best rendering engine I've ever used, maybe not the most versatile in it's current TS form, but very powerful even so.
I didn't know you were rendering in Vray from Modelside though! Yeah, there are some weird differences in Materials between the two ME's for sure... I spent hours on a material a couple of weeks ago and it looked great on one side and like trash on the other! I should have saved it and sent it to the Devs but I was too angry at the time about it and just scrapped it!:o
That particular material I uploaded here before has nice irridescent colours in the original image, but there is a strange mottling bump which shows up on it and really bugs me in renders. It would be just as easy and maybe better to use some "Mother Of Pearl"-type irridescent texture as an input image for that material, and I'm thinking it would be pretty easy to find with a Google Image Search or two. Conch Shells have similar colouring also.
I wish there was a way to set the GI environment independently per object in Vray... wouldn't that be awesome? A better implementation of Vray Layered Materials would be welcomed too, along with a greater variety of transparency options. Still, in my book Vray kicks tail for sure.:D
Hey, that bubbler I made was done in MOI... came out pretty good huh? Not bad for 20 seconds of work! Hahahaha!
Anyway, I've been having fun with all this... maybe when this is over we should post a new thread of all the Vray and LW Materials we come up with here too... it'll be a great variety and much better than the ones that shipped with TS (imho)!
Cheers!

Very nice! I think your current bubbles fit in with the rest of the scene much better. The new lighting setup is better too. I actually noticed his shoes.. Had to go back and make sure you didn't change them or something. ;) Definitely ready for the book. |

Definitely getting there Paul, though (my opinion only of course) they seem a touch too matt.
Still think he should loose the five o'clock shadow too! :)
Certainly getting better and better and I much prefer the new colour T-shirt, makes him seem more warm and loveable somehow. |

This story will probably take place over two days and I can't have the little fella wearing the same clothes so green T-Shirt first day, red the second. I also have a rather 'cute' nightime scene with the cloud in a bed!
As for the matt bubbles, I am having difficulty getting a good specular reflection without using HDRI which not only takes forever, but changes the look of the scene altogether. I want the sort of 'creamy' rainbow colour but I also want more shininess. Doddle with LW but that bit harder in Vray.
Oh well...a few more days before I go on holiday to tweak this. |

Weather was very nice. As you may know the canaries are known for being windy so it felt cooler than it was which was about 31-34 degrees most days. Hot enough for me and a nice break from the UK.
Good to be back though...:D |

Blimey, one day you're a mere mortal...the next day you get an ambassador title and start giving orders.
It's the end you know....I've seen it.....:rolleyes:
Well done by the way Steve. That's the thing about going away; I looked everywhere for my offer of Gold Ambassador but it must have got lost in the (e)mail....:D :D |

Thanks Mate. Don't worry I'm sure yours is on the way! Don't you already have a title though? 'ArchChancellor of icons' ;) :D |

Mmmm, that, as an acronymn, would be ACI or, as we say up north, ackey which means filthy dirty.
Yes, that fits perfectly....:D |

Well, back to the topic....
I never felt comfortable writing continuous prose in these books and relish the challenge of keeping the story succint and rhyhmic with words that actually rhyme so I have chosen this particular style.
Any feedback on this welcome and don't worry about the odd grammatical detail such as the cloud flitting between him and it, but does it feel right when reading it? |

Looks great paul. Only thing is that I can see where www sees the 5 oclock shadow. Something about the shape of the head creates a shadow that looks like that on the lower half. I don't know if I would have seen it like that if she didn't point it it though.
I really like the image and the writing. It is a lot of fun seeing you progress. So the cloud will take the boy for a ride huh? Can't wait to see! |

Okay, back to this project then. Early stages (and a room recycled from Harold's Hair). Gonna mess with the textures and lights more too. |

I think the eyes look staring in this shot. Probably better to do a bent line for each eye to indicate that the eyes are closed.
The colors and render are very nice. |

I share Jack's thoughts about the eyes but wanted to post to say that I enjoyed the verse in that frame, nice bit of writing that I could imagine reading to any kid, like "Goodnight Moon".:) Where the previous frame with the crying didn't work for me, this one frame is enough to tell the message of the cloud wanting it's freedom after a fun day with the boy. Both frames together would turn the story into a downer. |

Thanks for the input guys; I never thought about the two frames together and they are together in the story but I might get away with it.
Earlier in the story the cloud explains why he is alone and what happens when clouds get together so I wanted it to be crying (raining) when he was sad.
There is a certain empathy here as the boy starts out sad and is made happy by the cloud but then the cloud is sad and the boy has to make him happy...it all works out in the end but I have a lot of work to do on the images not least of which is modelling the entire beach AND a world to fly over!!
For this image Jack I just copied an existing 'daytime' head , eyes and all. I need to mess around with it a lot more but with this project I am doing the illustrations alongside each completed page of text to ensure there are spaces for the text to go and be readable. |

Phew! Cos with those staring eyes and the 'O' shaped mouth it looks like something else is going on and I'm sure that's not what this book is aiming for!!! |
