Ah! You sick puppies! How could you! Such a lovely and poignant story!
Although I must admit that sleeping with a cloud in your bed does raise questions about the wet patch! |

Let's put a little innocence back into this. Slight update...really struggling with time just lately. Even the Wii is getting neglected.
Anyways, still early days but this is how I work; place items in scene and arrange until happy then texture and light properly. Assess scene, move and pose again...and so on....and so on....
Crits welcome but let's keep it clean now... |

I hope you don't mind a late comer's thoughts on this one, but I really like what you have accomplished here. For children I think the color, feel and just plain good looks of the renders are right on. (Speaking of the later ones of course). Forgive me, but I skipped through some of the pages in this thread and will go back and look in more detail soon. (have you counted the number of posts in this thread?!? Well worth it tho)
I recall the question came up about how you attach a string to a cloud and I thought perhaps since the cloud has come to befriend the boy after the loss of his balloon, perhaps a cloudly looking hand might have come down from the cloud and grasped the string and just pulled it into the middle of the cloud? Like saying 'I'll be your friend'
sorry...got kinda choked up here....*sniff*
So..back to work! We need more renders :)

Nice thought Opie, this is the line from the book so I had just left it that the cloud sort of absorbed it:
“In that case,” the boy said, “We’ll be friends together and play on the beach whatever the weather”
And we will disguise you so that when we play, people will no longer chase you away.
The boy picked the catapults up and his string and looked at the cloud with a curious grin
And the cloud smiled back too and then said to the boy “throw that string up here; I’ll be your new toy”.
So the boy threw the string up right into the cloud and the rest of the day they went running around,
Laughing and joking until very soon, the little boy no longer missed his balloon.
They splashed in the sea and it felt so right and played on the beach through the day until night.
Then they sat on the shore, happy as can be, and watched the sun set at the edge of the sea.
Of course, the text (and images) will evolve over the course of this project. I am seeing what happens with the Asian developer. I am hoping to keep this one to myself as it is something I would still like to see in a traditional book format, especially if the other ranges go digital...
And there are no latecomer's Opie, all are welcome and comment especially so. Unless I find a serious amount of space in my work schedule, this project will take some time to complete anyway |

No I like it just the way it is. I also like that you re-textured the table to match and the wallpaper is better too. The only possible change is the amount of light on the cloud and I'm not even sure that would improve your fine image.
The overall feeling is "Dreamy" |

Splinters, this is wonderful... that last image is so right!
When it's available for purchase I want to know! I would love to give this as a gift to my new grandson who is to be born middle of next month. I think his dad (my son) will love reading it to him. ^_^

I agree on the perfectness of this last image. In fact I've been quite impressed with what you have done with this project. I also would like to buy the book for kids and grandkids. Keep it up! |

Guys, as soon as I get it published you will be the first to know (well maybe third after my family and bank manager).
If you are new to the forums you may not remember my struggle to get publishers to accept this style of art (3D/CAD). They say that the parents buy the book not the child and parents still like traditional (see watercolour) style illustrations.
I guess I will have to wait until this generation of kids become parents eh?
Still, they said Harry Potter would never take off as no-one was interested in Witches and Wizards...... |

Splinters, while I'm sure this is not the publishing route you're hoping for, if need be, you could certainly do something like this. this particular site is free to use, and people purchase albums and books if they wish...
http://www.winkflash.com/books/
http://www.winkflash.com/books/winkbook.asp
Just a thought to keep in the back of your mind, just in case ... it's not right to let myopic publishers prevent distribution of such a delightful book. (there are probably other options out there too)

Cheers guys, although this image is not actually finished: I am just getting nearer to the look and composition I want...:D
Still want to add some string, a pair of shoes, glass of water, alarm clock...the book they are reading etc. However, the style is deliberately simplistic so not too much detail.
As for self-publishing, a last resort for me. There is always Lulu.com and I had considered having a few books made to sell myself but there would be no money to be made there...just a nice gift to share.
I may have to do this with 'Chonkyponk' which I know Paul Boland is rather fond of, as it has a rather dark tone. I love it myself but only a very daring publisher would touch it...
EDIT: Butterpaw, when you select UK in the Winkflash site, the books and albums option is not available....guess that would just leave Lulu then... |

Aww, looks like a business waiting for an entrepreneur .. :(
However, I'd certainly be happy to facilitate if the winkflash option looked reasonable.. I imagine you'd need to double the price in order to get any profit.. but the small winkflash books would have been cheap enough for the market to bear the doubling. I looked a deviantArt (which I use for my prints) but while they have a variety of products, including calendars, they don't seem to have books.. (too bad, because my experience of their printers is excellent)
I'll keep a weather eye open for any other possibilities (just in case - I've got my fingers crossed for you re publishers) ^_^ |

Never happy with these, I have tweaked it further. My daughter said the quilt was a bit 'girlie' so I got a more boyish design and I also added a nice clock and the string from the cloud. It may be a bit too dark now but I am liking this...:) |

Looking back, I'm inclined to agree with her! The old quilt wasn't overtly girly, but this new one is much better for a boy. Only thing I'd query is the colour combination between walls and quilt - blue and green aren't that common a colour combo in interior decorating... would maybe expect the walls to be in a blue pattern too? Although I realise this could lead to a real colour dominance....
The extra touches like the shoes and clock are good - it does look like he'd fall over his shoes the moment he gets out of bed, but then that's probably normal for a young boy! In our house, the shoes live downstairs in a cupboard of sorts..!
(edit - and I spot a certain pipg in the pages of the book - nice touch!) |

Yeah, I am almost there with this. The green I sorta like, reminds me of the Jeunet films like delicatessen, city of lost children and amelie. he has this thing for strong green and red in contrast in the scenes. I thought red was a bit too brutal for this so went for blue. Plus the scene is drenched in moonlight with a blue tinge.
Just the problem with that jagged nurb now...:o |

Looks great Paul. The only thing that jumps out at me is the string.
At first glance it looked more like a crack in the table.
Maybe if it was loosely coiled up on the table it might look more like a string.

Maybe your over engineering the problem? Why not just have the string on a flat plane using transparency,
or just draw the string on the texture of the table top? Its too small to worry about casting shadows so you should be fine.
K.I.S.S. :D

LOL, don't worry-I wouldn't scrap the project over this...I jmeant scrap the string from the image. Not a major problem-more of a headache but I just need the flexibility to be able to keep moving the wire around within the composition until I am happy. Were this LW based it would be no problem biut I like the 'glowing' look of Vray for this project.
Oh well....thanks guys...:D |

Regarding the colors you've chosen for the walls, quilt etc. I think you've hit the mark on this.. Clarity of color is very appealing to a child's eye.. the blues and greens work very well ... love that little clock! ^_^
I'm sure you'll get the string sorted ;) |

Thanks Butterpaw, I appreciate everyones feedback but colour is a personal thing and these really work for me. They are also in contrast to the 'daytime' scenes and help to show a shift to night time. The blue and green theme also runs through them but I am going for a fairly simplistic look here.
Besides, nothing is final...not until this thing goes to print and maybe not even then...;) |

I'll sort something out for the wire. If you ever follow my method you have great flexibility for dragging points to drape wire/string around scene. I used to sweep along a path but that sort of got broke in tS7.
As for publishing I hope you have a lot of time to read through the relevant posts. I have been trying for over 6 years to get my books (Little Cloud is No 24!) published but all I ever get is "these type of illustrations are too modern".
I probably just have to wait for the publishing industry to catch up with technology....
On that point see the other post I just started..... |
