The bolder brighter colors are much better - I think it is a wee bit too saturated and would tone it done just a touch, but that could be personal taste, and of course may vary in print than on monitor (as well as varying between monitors!).

But much better like this, not only more sunny, but more appealing for its intended audience I think.

Thanks for sharing!

I think the composition and coloring is very appropriate. keep up the good work!

Further to others comments about bright colour and saturation the overwhelming impression I got was of cleanlinesss - this is by no means a bad thing but my initial reaction was "wow that kid looks really clean - are kids ever really that clean?".

In the final analysis I decided that I like the idea of portraying an uber-clean child - it's something that may well appeal to parents (a vital consideration when writing material for children) and kids in general react well to bright colours - my opinion? Keep the colours pretty much as they are - they look great.

Hope this helps.

Yup, I am going for clean (plus Vray has no dirt shaders :D ) Imagine those summer adverts for washing powders. However, I modelled this on a really rather nasty laptop and viewing it on my Sony dual monitors showed the colours to be a 'little' too bright so you are all right really.

Damn, I wish i didn't have so many exam papers to mark...I am feeling very creative again...:(

Slight update...tried some SSS on the skin parts. A bit too jelly like for now...:o

I agree.. the one without SSS looks better.. Only marginally better, but that is because you do such good work,( :D ), that minor tweeks are only going to get you marginal differences. I say go with the one before this one.

I really like the effect when adding the SSS texture to the cloud...:D

I actually think that I will avoid any 'cartoon' facial features in the cloud instead leaving the imagination to make shapes...just like real cloud watching.

I agree; the sub-surface scattering really works well with that. Makes it seem more like a non-solid object while not actually affecting its visibility.

Looks great Paul.
I question the reflections on the face and how the string is attached to hand and maybe the color and thickness too.

Cheers guys, but Trueblue I do not see any reflections on the face...

As for the hand and string...just placeholders until I get the look and colour schemes/textures right, then I will finish off modelling and pose this correctly.

I am happy with the cloud though.

However, what is the best plug in to make big fluffy smoke clouds with?

I think he is talking about the highlights - if viewed just right, it makes the front look like it is reflecting the shoreline and there is a yellow spot on the back of the head. I'm not seeing a problem with it, but you could tweek around and see what you come up with. - not sure about the best way to do the cloud... maybe add a touch of transparency?

Thoroughly delightful! Looking excellent Paul. The bright colours look fine in the sunset pic. The SSS on the cloud is a winner too. great stuff.

PS I used to have a little cloud like that which followed me round everywhere I went but then my Doctor changed my medications!;)

Highlight on the back of the head is actually the mouth allowing light through the model due to the SSS. As for the daytime view I am still a bit puzzled there but I am enjoying this now and will make a bit more progress this week I hope...:D

Clouds usually have that flat-bottomed look to them Splinters due to perspective so maybe even if the cloud is closer it might make it 'feel' even more cloudlike if you file off the bottom to make the bottom edge more of a horizontal line. Satisfying our preconceptions about what a cloud should look like I mean. Looking lovely. Sorry to be picky mate but on preconceptions and physics should the light balloon's string be vertical most of the time? Perhaps the balloon looks less itching-to-fly with the relaxed string just wondering if the relaxed string look is what you're after but anyway it certainly looks very nice as it is. I'm wondering if the tautness of the string would be one way to express the balloon's mood if the balloon also has something to say later. Is there a fighting Malay kite turning up :)

Well, the story is coming together slowly but I am afraid the balloon 'dies' leaving the boy without a balloon and a cloud without a friend.....

A little more experimentation with Vray. I am imagining this as the back cover with a similar day and/or balloon based front...or the other way around...:o

I'm really interested how your going to handle the cloud Paul. Any concepts done yet???

Just the one in the earlier image there. I thought about this and my daughter came in the room and said "he's smiling" and "look there are his eyes".

Her comments got me thinking that clouds are great for that; we all see different things in them. So, I am going to keep the cloud somewhat face-like but let the reader see what they want in there.

I can help by making the cloud slightly drooped and more grey to express sadness and bright and fluffy for a happier tone.

Either way, I will experiment more when I have time.

for your front cover, maybe you should have the balloon. since the boy starts with it, and ends up with the cloud, it would make sense to the average child.

Subtle but....he has only three fingers now. I tried rigging the arm so it could be posed but strange things happened...they were not good things either...:(

Still gotta work some details out but it is coming together.

looks great Splinters, the only thing I see that seems off is the string on the cloud..seems more like a large cable than a string.. maybe it would look better tied around his wrist too..:)

Ok, string changed...sleeved hollowed (they were solid before) and light changed very slightly. A few details and the hands posed properly and we are about ready to make some scenes...and write a story...;)

Thought it would be fun to collaborate on a story with everyone contributing ideas but it would get real messy if it were ever published...

EDIT: Tried a more innocent (cute?) pose as well.

I'd go for a little more detail in the face, and less on the shoes... I understand that you want to create your own style and not another version of Wallace and Grommit, but I just can't get used to that black pie hole and those expressionless eyes are kind of creepy. It's tough to come up with new ways for facial expressions without drawing a bit on what has been done before.

Nice work on the cloud, it reminds me of a piece of popcorn, but that's probably just my imagination going wild. :D

Good point skipper but I do like the shoes...:D As for the face, I am thinking simple curve over the dot to show amazement, sadness etc. but that is all as I want it real simple.

Anyway, I deleted the other image while trying to change it so here it is.

Trying to put a sandy bump map on the plane for the beach but tS crashes every time I paint the object...:(

EDIT: Sadder, more grey version for comparison
