... this is a cloud that breaks away from the 'crowd' ...
Is this what the weatherman calls an 'isolated shower'?
Re my earlier remarks about the cloud - I like the shape, the colour and the SSS just fine - it just verges on being a little too solid looking in the sunshiney pictures - it would look ideal is Vray supported an equivalent of LW's Edge Alpha options, but still looks great even without that. |

It's obscenely tempting to string a whole bunch of expletives before the word "brilliant" for what I've seen on this so far. But I'll just stick to "BRILLIANT!"
Seriously, I think you've got the soft, cartoony/claymation-y look down perfectly. Awesome stuff. |

Thought I might tweak one of these to enter into the gallery this month and chose this one. I put a pocket on the back of the shorts but not sure what to put in it. First thought was a catapult made from a twig but that seemed a bit mischevious for this little kid.
I want to add more detail but that would defeat the style of this piece....any ideas? |

packet/tube of sweets. Or a lollipop.
Don't think he should be casting a shadow on the sun though! (Most noticeable top of head and shoulders) |

Cheers WW, I would probably choose the lollipop but then again I just had the idea of using the catapult as a story device....we shall see...;) |

Love the dead branch you've got him sitting on Splinters!
Much better than when he was just standing there, it has a much better feeling of relaxation and contentment now.
I too was thinking of the catapult, or as we yanks call it, a sling-shot ;) |

Beautiful work Splinters - the sunset one is very evocative and the colours look brilliant. The sunny day one is also lovely and I particularly like the touch of fuzziness around the cloud - that's exactly the right touch IMO.
Good luck with your entry. |

I see a huge improvement! I'm still not sure about the back of his hair.
The water in the foreground looks like cracked mud so that needs touching up.
The picture of the Boy looking at the Cloud would look better if one hand was held over his eyes. Looking into the sun you shade your eyes with your hand.
You may not believe me but your last pose (sitting on a branch) is the best you've done yet. (Of ALL your work) |

I really like how these have come along - the last two shots are great. The pose on the log for the sunset is a great touch and feels very natural.
My only query would be where is the story set? I don't remember if you said already, but the last shot implies to me that he isn't in the UK - even in the summer on a great day, the water isn't usually that colour and the light isn't usually like that - I could believe he's somewhere tropical like the Maldives though.
I really like the style of your work, so look forward to seeing how it all shapes up in the end. Oh, and I agree he seems a bit 'clean cut' for a catapult too - some of the alternatives already suggested might be more fitting (perhaps some sun-glasses?) |

I am going with the catapult for the sunset shot and maybe a nice sun shot as well. Agreed, he is too nice a kid to actually own a catapult but I thought..plot device.
For instance (still roughing out ideas) his balloon is popped by mischevious boys playing on the beach, they drop their catapult as they run away, he picks it up rather than leave it for someone to find. Without his balloon he is sad and lonely which is when he meets a similarly lonely cloud.
I even thought of him using the catapult to fend off an angry thunder cloud later in the story...only to realise he is no better than the boys who popped his balloon.
This story can't all be aaah...aaah....aahhh...the end. Too cutesy!
Therefore it needs a bit of aaaah...arrrggh...Mmmm....uh?.....errr...arrrgh... .aaaah....the end. |

Must be a very thick rubber balloon to not burst when puncture. I would just leave a raged piece tied to the string |

Just trying to think like a child here...they care not for the physics of how a balloon bursts and may have difficulty relating to a little red rag...:o
We shall see how the story pans out and I do take your point...you must never insult a child's intelligence but given the talking cloud/disproportional figure etc. I think I may just get away with the balloon...;) |

Trumpton! THAT'S what this character reminds me of. I knew it would come to me eventually!
Totally agree with Splinters about the balloon V ragged bit. This is cartoon, not reality. Otherwise we could spend days debating how he got his head through the neck of that T Shirt.... :) |

I love it when people make cartoons with TrueSpace; it shows that reality isn't your limit, even though when you open TrueSpace, it says "Reality Designer". Splinters, I have to ask you what your specs are on your laptop! My laptop barely runs TrueSpace 7.5 (which I'm assuming you used to create this); then again my laptop is made for a student to do his schoolwork, but he decides to run something the laptop isn't made to run, and it doesn't work too well!:p Aren't you a graphic design teacher, Splinters?

OH YES!!! Well done Kate. Its been bugging me to. This I sooooooooo trumpton. Well done kate I'll sleep tonight now. ;)
BTW Paul I'd take that as a very great compliment if I where you. Trumpton was one of the greatest TV shows ever to come out of the UK.
Heres a little link for the non-UK members.Trumpton rocks!!! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7ZWWwV4_-M)
The catapult is a nice touch BTW. |
