Yay! Harold's back! I'm a big fan of 'Our 'arold' but I must confess I was hoping for something about Deep Space Doris - of all your awesome characters she is my favourite (closely followed by Harold). There is just something so incredibly endearing about Doris with her plaid coat and space suit! I guess she probably also reminds me of my own SpaceWitch character.
Anyway, I'm suspecting Harolds going to try his hand at some DIY renovations - that should be exciting!! :D |

never sure where these stories go but I definitely need a scene where the house collapses in a pile of smoke and rubble.
Rubble I can (tediously) make but any ideas what the best method is for making smoke? Preferably free or already in tS. |

Well... the best way would be a volume shader... but since we don't have that, probably best is alpha mapped planes.... |

Cheers Jack, do we have any decent particle stuff? Is the inbuilt stuff in tS any good? |

Unfortunately, it's not free, but check out Particle Illusions.

You can get a Special Edition for only US$99.00 and with the dollar so good against the Euro and Pound at the moment, it shouldn't cost you an arm and a leg to get it. I love this software, it's dead easy to use and can produce some truly stunning effects. My games visuals wouldn't be the same if not for Particle Illusions. |

Model side we've got several particle packages but they are for Lightworks... :(
I image if the physics system is put to use, a particle system could be made just by creating an emitter script that creates and applies the physical attributes to each "particle".
The script would need to keep track of the particles so it could delete/hide/recycle them when their duration elapses, the script could also update the material to animate it over time.
Some of what is needed to do it is already coded by Dele here:
http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=3978
http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=3267
Though a UV shifting approach would likely be faster for animating than trying to change materials on the fly.
I've got a particle effects generator idea I'm working on that treats all the particles as a single mesh, so theoretically it could handle up to a million particles. The math and storing the animation data gets a bit tricky once you throw in emitter movement and collision with moving objects in the environment. Not sure when I'm going to have time to work on it more though.
I think the physics approach would be faster and easier to implement, so hopefully someone will give it a go. If not, then I may code up a quickie one. |

Smoke - o you have the fxPak? Primal Particles, trueParticles and, of course, PyroCluster. A one stop solution shop! |

Yup, and you could render the particles in LW then composite them with a VRay or Dribble render. |

You should be able to render out 2 or three particle effects shots in LW and paint them onto alpha planes - you could even paint the dust clouds in PS or any app that can do volumetrics |
