I appologize if this is already covered in the manual, but is there a way to make custom shaders for VRay?
I need to do reflectance and specular mapping and as far as I can tell none of the VRay shaders support this, or seem to support mapping for any of the chanels except bump, normal, and color...?
Any thoughts out there?

Not at the moment it seems. I'm looking for the same thing for my Charlize model, but I'm now concentrating on lightworks for mapping. We're very limited with what we can do with vray compared to other packages, but I'm hopeful that we'll see much more versatility in future upgrades. We need mapping and multilayered textures for starters.

Many new Vray features have been mentioned on these forums and in press releases for 7.5. |

Yeah I noticed odd results when I tried to layer two high specular materials... ended up with matte....
I sure hope they open up the VRay archetecture a bit with the next release so people can expand upon it as needed, because in the current situation without even simple specular and reflectance mappings VRay is pretty crippled.
I'm going to have to either figure out VirtuaLight or go back to Lightwork's painfully slow render times and no GI...
Also I wonder were we're at with planned VRay 1.5 functionality? Since that's at the RC stage for Max already...

VRay for Max is a completely different product from VRay for tS. We can dream and we might see some of the VRay for Max features, but there's no word on what or when. |

Well guess there's always Yafray.... Might have to sit down and write that script after all.... *sigh* the thought of going back to a command line renderer reminds me of the old days of Pov-Ray.............

I'm going to have to either figure out VirtuaLight
virtualight gives some very good results.....
does the built in version include the reflectance shader that Simon Windmill wrote for virtuaout? It was a pretty good all-rounder. |

I posted here about the missing examples that were suppose to be included. Still no response.

The Vray 1.5 for max is or shouldn't necessrily be completely all that different than the standalone version (most liekly to be released later on) as the version has to be based of the vray sdk which always seems to come out wayy later for stand-alone. I remember me and other users asking Roman how exactly we were limited in terms of the adavanced version and the basic version but imo it mostly seems(which I hope) the render across many machines feature. I'm not sure as I don't remeber seeing a real answer other than "it will be close to the advanced version" which is not all that bad (I dont have money for the vray standalone advanced version then the time needed to make it work with .RsScn's for ts7).
The real differences to me are implementation of vray for the user to use them eg. how the material editor is for ts7 compared to 3dsmax or any other 3d package that uses the render engine. How it uses photons, incremental updates (which I saw that it was to be apart of the new ts version of vray) and such.
Though at the moment Vray1.5 is for 3dsmax I would still expect to see the Vray 1.5 sdk or whatever version its supposed to be to be released (its going to be a while since its just beta for 3dsmax). The real question is will Caligari be able to take advantage or be able to get the updated vray core for the sdks new features as they are under some special agreement with choas group. |

I'll respond to trueBlue. I hate the thought of him sitting there unable to do anything with VirtuaLight for the sake of an example, so go to the VirtuaLight website:
http://www.3dvirtualight.com/
Download and unpack VirtuaLight 1.4 for Windows and you'll find the \examples directory. The alien.vs file mentioned is in the \level2 directory. |

the only benefit we will get from a Vray integration instead of a plugin to a standalone version is the feature implementation.
Vray for Max has features the standalone version willn't have.
The same for Maya version and XSI but there Chaos creates these plugins itself,
I think they are close the original Vray for Max like the plugins which are available for Rhino and Sketchup.
The advantage of a Standalone Renderer is it's speed because it will be a bit faster.
I hope that the implementation of Vray will be as good as Lightworks and maybe replace this at some time (not saying that Lightworks is bad but it's not up to date). A flexible render like Vray will make it much easier up to the time where unbiased renderers will replace it but I hope that if this time will come more companys create also plugins for trueSpace and not just for Max, Maya, Cinema4d, Lightwave and XSI. |

The 3dsmax version has features that the standalone doesn't(but could since the person who buys it has full access to the sdk and if knowledgable could create the same things) because choas group is specifically coding the extra stuff themselves for it. Technically as the Vray version for ts matures it should be up to par with 3dmax's give or take a few features or implemen. differences (that's why they are different).
but yeah, I also look forward to that day that Vray ts gets up there someday. |

Bobbins: Thank you very much for this information. I apologize that I do not have as much experience as you do. Is kind of frustrating trying to follow examples that are in the trueSpace7 Artist’s Manual. Which is why I purchased it, so that I could learn how to use this program. |

I am also looking into why the examples are missing , and seeing if they can be made available without having to install vlight to get them.

Thanks Paul! I was concerned having two installations of the same program and I was not sure how to have these folders set up inside the trueSpace7 folder the proper way. |
