Hi prodigy, Thanks for the report.

rather than a re-install you could first try and delete the default.ctx typically found in C:\trueSpace7\tS .

When you launch you will get a libraries restored from disc message.

Doing this should allow tS7 to load in a default state

Cayenne,
Shouldn't some kind of backup be developed so all this could be done with one button in the future? It would make life easier down the road. There are various ways to save in TS 7.11 today and to be honest I can't tell you which is which. I use a bunch of them and hope I have something to use in the future. (including saving the default.ctx)
You can rename these in the future..and some I made up...
Save object
Save scene
Save library
Save layout
Save settings
Save preferences
Save Desktop Context
Save material
Save State
Save or Export (Your choice)(but you'll be sorry.....)
Save the whole Enchilada
Let the computer pick one
Spin the wheel
Send it over the Bridge and blame Microsoft
User Error
A PS button (but that is a differant topic;) )

One button to save everything One button to restore.

P.S The problem Prodigy mentioned about using previous scene when loading was mentioned back in 7.0 and not fixed in 7.1...why?

Hi prodigy , if you want to send me the corrupted files in a rar or zip by private email feel free to do so,( the ctx zipped may also prove useful as well if you still have it). I would be interested in analysing the file .

Hi Steinie, There is a button to save the ctx and also a button to restore the ctx to a default state.

But if the application will not Launch then the measure would be to delete the default.ctx

you missed the save project library off your list ;-).

edit-- also could you point me at the report about using previous scene-- end of edit-- please

If I select "Save Current State" is that the same as saving default.ctx?

Is the "Reset to Default Context" loading from original install or the ctx from "Save Current State"?

If it's the original what button loads my saved ctx?

Thanks in advance.

I wish the wording on these buttons where better. (Icons are ok so cool down Splinters);)

Hi Steinie

"Save Current State" is that the same as saving default.ctx?

yes this saves the current state as a default.ctx

"Reset to Default Context" loading from original install or the ctx from "Save Current State"?

Loads the ctx from the default original safe state, not the saved current state.

If it's the original what button loads my saved ctx?

Now you have me ;-) , the button to load a saved ctx was removed , I do not know why.

If you want to replace or load the one you saved then you would replace the default.ctx typically found in C:\trueSpace7\tS with your own and when you launch tS7 it will use this one as its default launch state.

One button to save everything One button to restore.

...& 1 button to rule them all. :D

For anyone wanting to delete &/or backup their default.ctx, read my post here (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?p=13900&highlight=batch#post13900). That post explains more about it, so I won't go into too much detail here. It might not be a button inside tS, but with that, all you have to do is exit tS & run the script - it'll even restart tS for you.

I recently installed the Caligari Thumbnails viewer and had to remove it. Reason why is I tried to open a folder I have on my desktop which has objects and scenes and I could not open it. It would show for a brief second and then close. I did notice that I had a scene and objects together which could be the reason. Uninstalling the viewer fixed the problem. Note that I used the viewer successfully in other folders though.

I'm quite confused by all the necessary save state/preferences/blabla as well. There's modeler preferences, stack view preferences, layout library, default state and what not. I feel like we have to be rocket scientists to fully understand that. If you do this and that, you have to save this and that, otherwhise it won't work or will be lost. I think buttons are OK, but not everything needs to be buttons. There is still a reason for dialogue boxes, normally called by an options/preferences menu. In most cases these functions are not used on a daily basis, so save some confusion and workspace and get rid of those buttons. Same goes for the libraries. It took me quite a while to find out where and how to load certain RS files, and sometimes how to load them (DX shader functions). The whole thing needs a serious cleanup.

So I thought I would try this out, I installed the thumbnail viewer, as I had it on my harddrive, Install went fine and restarted my system and all worked fine for me no errors what so ever, I can see all my SCN and COB files, mind you this was made available with TS6 and was created in the summer of 2004 so it doesn't show the new TS7 format but I don't think it's corrupt.

the thumbnail viewer works fine on ts6.6 and earlier scn and cob file..using xp sp2 ..I have had it running on my new system for two years now without problem..[but when I had a corrupt scene file, it would crash when opening the folder it was in..after deleting the file as is well ]

if you have thumbnails on in explorer for that folder, you can't open it that way .. To delete the offending file..use 'file/load/scene' because thumbnails should be off by default in the load scene window..

I'm quite confused by all the necessary save state/preferences/blabla as well. There's modeler preferences, stack view preferences, layout library, default state and what not. I feel like we have to be rocket scientists to fully understand that.

first forget about most of the ts6.6 style things..some of the preferences work [only in model of course], but not things like turning off autoload..
the new stackview preferences didn't even rate a paragraph in the manual or I never found anything about it..it seems not to be needed

I have had no problems by just saving my layouts in the stack library..[don't bother with the ts6.6 one, it shouldn't even be there anymore]
most important is the 'savestate'. [.ctx file]. I overwrite the default.ctx and save backups elsewhere..if something goes wrong..[that happens when experimenting alot in the LE] just delete the default.ctx and replace it by getting [one of] your backup.ctx ,rename it to default.ctx and replacing the one you deleted..then reopen ts7..works great..everything is restored to the state you last saved....so if you have a custom setup and want to save it that's the way.. i.e. widgets, custom toolbars, and custom script nodes in the LE..

yes this saves the current state as a default.ctx

"Reset to Default Context" loading from original install or the ctx from "Save Current State"?
Loads the ctx from the default original safe state, not the saved current state.

If you want to replace or load the one you saved then you would replace the default.ctx typically found in C:\trueSpace7\tS with your own and when you launch tS7 it will use this one as its default launch state.

This script will load your saved.ctx from \trueSpace7\tS

function Execute(params)
{
RsApp.Load("yoursavedname.ctx")
}

Yep that's a script alright...now what? Just kidding.

How can I run the script with a button? Is that done in the LE? This is not my field so of course there stupid questions.:o

prodigy you should be able to turn thumbnails off in 'control panel /folder options' ..

Steinie..first you have to do a 'save state' and save a 'yourname.ctx' ..but it's just as easy to go to windows explorer, delete the :\trueSpace7\tS default.ctx ..if you keep your other 'savestate ' backup.ctx files in the same directory then take the one you want and rename it to default.ctx ..then open ts7..
of course you need a REASON to do this..the main REASON would be, because your workspace has become corrupted..it's like deleting the truespace.cfg in ts66 except better because you can actually save a state when things are running good..

Open the :icon_MacroRecord_JS jScript Macro recorder. Select the Start macro record button and then the Stop macro recording button.
Select and Copy the script below:

function Execute(params)
{
RsApp.Load("yoursavedname.ctx")
}

Enter the Recorded Macro, 1 script that was created from the above steps that is now in the Link Editor by clicking on the orange triangle. Select all of the Text/Script that is inside and then Right-click and paste the above script. Change the yoursavedname to what you named your saved ctx file which should be located in the trueSpace7/tS/ folder. Exit out of the script and select the Start button to run the script. trueSpace7 will close and then restart. You will be responsible for the correct name in the script. So if you save to another named file you will have to change the script to match. Hence this is most likely why there is no button any more because there is no dialog to choose from.

If you would like to create a button, look at this thread for help:
http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showpost.php?p=10237&postcount=4 (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showpost.php?p=10237&postcount=4)
In this case you would just copy and paste the Command:
RsApp.Load("yoursavedname.ctx");
into your button's Command edit box.

I just had this same problem with TrueSpace 6.6. It corrupted my SCENES folder and was unable to open it even with Window Explorer. I was able to fix the problem by first ZIPPING up the folder then I opened up the ZIP file (but didn't extract it) and copied all the good files to another temporary folder (Note: turns out the last scene I was working on corrupted the folder so I just didn't copy that scene to the new folder). Once everything was copied to the temporary folder, I deleted the SCENES folder and renamed the temporary folder to SCENES.....vola ... it worked. So the idea is that with the folder in its ZIPPED state you can go in an look at the contents and pick out the good files. Sigh....TrueSpace is the only program I own that can corrupt an entire folder......
